Book Measurement of Salinity of Sea Water Classic Reprint

Download or read book Measurement of Salinity of Sea Water Classic Reprint written by Jerry H. Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Measurement of Salinity of Sea Water Two inexpensive methods have been found that are satisfactory. When the motion of the ship is not great, hydrometers of good quality that have been calibrated have been found to give satisfactory results when properly used; and for use in any ordinary weather suitable for hydrography a chemical titration method has been worked out that requires little or no previous experience for its successful manipulation. The writer has calibrated the dipping refractometer to give salinity of sea water. Although the apparatus involved is rather expensive, so that probably it will not be supplied generally to the ships of the bureau, it is quite simple and easy to manipulate and will give good results on board ship even in the roughest weather. Book Apparatus for the Determination Aboard Ship of the Salinity of Sea Water by the Electrical Conductivity Method Classic Reprint

Download or read book Apparatus for the Determination Aboard Ship of the Salinity of Sea Water by the Electrical Conductivity Method Classic Reprint written by Frank Wenner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apparatus for the Determination Aboard Ship of the Salinity of Sea Water by the Electrical Conductivity Method To give satisfactory results the apparatus should be capable of reproducing measurements of the electrical conductivity to 1 part in corresponding roughly to changes of 10 mg per liter total salt and something less than 1 part in in the density. This could be obtained readily in the laboratory, but the conditions at sea are such as to make the problem much more difficult. For convenience in use, the equipment should be relatively small in size and constitute a unit rather than an assemblage of a number of pieces of apparatus. Further, it should be capable of being operated from the lighting circuit of the ship on which it is installed. The equipment must be sufficiently rugged or so protected as not to suffer mechanical injury during the severest storms, and should be capable of being used during rough weather. The electrical insula tion must remain good in the presence of an ocean atmosphere, and should not be injured in case sea water is spilled over parts of the apparatus. As the temperature coefficient of the electrical conduc tivity of sea water is in the neighborhood of 2 or 3 per cent per C., to obtain a precision of 1 part in the temperature must be controlled to better than one-hundredth C. Or provision made to compensate for uncertainties of the temperature. Also the various manipulations necessary in making measurements should be the simplest possible consistent with obtaining the precision sought. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Measuring the Salinity of Irrigation Waters and of Soil Solutions With the Wheatstone Bridge The portable bridge was designed primarily for testing the salinity of soils; and while the instrument could be used for measuring the salinity Of such solutions as irrigation and drainage waters, it was not wholly satisfactory for such use, chiefly because the electrodes could not be platinized and consequently the resistance readings were not definite. Book The Effect of Pressure on the Electrical Conductivity of Sea Water Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Effect of Pressure on the Electrical Conductivity of Sea Water Classic Reprint written by Ralph Albert Horne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Effect of Pressure on the Electrical Conductivity of Sea Water The importance of detailed knowledge concerning the electrical conduc tivity of the sea and of the variation of this parameter with concentration, tem perature, and pressure is widely recognized. As a consequence of The Conference on Physical and Chemical Properties of Sea Water, held at Easton, Maryland, in September, 195 8, 5 sponsored by the Office of'naval Research and the Committee on Oceanography of the National Academy of Sciences, the Committee on Chemi cal Properties recommended that electrical conductivity be used as a sea -water characteristic, and the Committee on Physical Properties reported that knowledge of the effect of pressure on the conductivity of sea water would be useful In a paper given at this same conference, D. W. Pritchard of the Chesapeake Bay Insti tute of Johns Hopkins University noted that the lack of certain basic information restricts the use of in situ conductivity measurements in deep water for the de termination of salinity. There appears to have been no investigation of the effect of pressure on the conductivity of sea water Thus it would seem very desirable to include a study of the pressure effect of conductivity in any program developed to improve our knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of sea 3) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Measuring Water Cubic measures do well enough for the contents of vessels, or as we may express it, for dealing with the science of hydrostatics. But so soon as the water to be measured is in motion, or so soon as the science of hydraulics has been entered upon, we must get clearly in our minds the idea of rates of flow, or of a procession of such cubic volumes passing a given point in a certain unit of time, as of a flow of so many cubic feet per second. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Salinity of the Surface Water in the North Pacific Ocean and in the Adjacent Enclosed Seas The specific gravity of the water Of the Philippines and of the Sulu and Celebes Seas is much less than that of the adjacent parts of the Pacific. In order to appreciate the significance of the varying salinities in the North Pacific and in the enclosed seas bordering upon it some attention must be given to the Circulation of the water in the region and to the course and interrelationships of.the various currents found there.
