Book Measurement of the D0 Meson Production in Pb Pb and p Pb Collisions

Download or read book Measurement of the D0 Meson Production in Pb Pb and p Pb Collisions written by Andrea Festanti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first measurement of charmed D0 meson production relative to the reaction plane in Pb–Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision of √sNN = 2.76 TeV. It also showcases the measurement of the D0 production in p–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement of the D0 azimuthal anisotropy with respect to the reaction plane indicates that low- momentum charm quarks participate in the collective expansion of the high-density, strongly interacting medium formed in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, despite their large mass. This behavior can be explained by charm hadronization via recombination with light quarks from the medium and collisional energy loss. The measurement of the D0 production in p–Pb collisions is crucial to separate the effect induced by cold nuclear matter from the final- state effects induced by the hot medium formed in Pb–Pb collisions. The D0 production in p–Pb collisions is consistent with the binary collision scaling of the production in pp collisions, demonstrating that the modification of the momentum distribution observed in Pb–Pb collisions with respect to pp is predominantly induced by final-state effects such as the charm energy loss.

Download or read book Lectures on Particle Physics Astrophysics and Cosmology written by Carlos Merino and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-22 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers the content of the courses held at the Third IDPASC School, which took place in San Martiño Pinario, Hospederia and Seminario Maior, in the city of Santiago de Compostela, Galiza, Spain, from January 21st to February 2nd, 2013. This school is the annual joint program of the International Doctorate Network in Particle Physics, Astrophysics, and Cosmology (IDPASC). The purpose of the school series is to present doctoral students from different universities and laboratories in Europe and beyond with a broad range of the latest results and current state of the art in the fields of Particle Physics, Astrophysics, and Cosmology, and to further introduce them to both the questions now posed by the potentials of physics and to challenges connected with current and future experiments – in particular, with the newly available energy ranges. Following these guidelines, the content of this third edition of the IDPASC School was jointly planned by the Academic Council and by the network’s International Committee, whose members ensure every year its timely formulation, keeping up with the constant evolution of these fields. The program covers a balanced range of the latest developments in these fields worldwide, with courses offered by internationally acknowledged physicists on the Basic Features of Hadronic Processes, Quantum Chromodynamics, Physics and Technology of ALICE, LHCb Physics-Parity Violation, the Higgs System in and beyond the Standard Model, Higgs Searches at the LHC, Theory and Experiments with Cosmic Rays, Numerical Methods and Data Analysis in Particle Physics, Theoretical Cosmology, and AdS/CFT Correspondence. Most of these courses were complemented by practical and discussion sessions.

Book Measurement of B jet Shapes in Inclusive Jet Production in P Anti p Collisions at S

Download or read book Measurement of B jet Shapes in Inclusive Jet Production in P Anti p Collisions at S written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a measurement of the shapes of b-jets using 300 pb−1 of data obtained with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II) in p{bar p} collisions at center of mass energy √s = 1.96 TeV. This measurement covers a wide transverse momentum range, from 52 to 300 GeV/c. Samples of heavy-flavor enhanced jets together with inclusive jets are used to extract the average shapes of b-jets. The b-jets are expected to be broader than inclusive jets. Moreover, b-jets containing a single b-quark are expected to be narrower than those containing a b{bar b} pair from gluon splitting. The measured b-jet shapes are found to be significantly broader than expected from the pythia and HERWIG Monte Carlo simulations. This effect may arise from an underestimation of the fraction of b-jets originating from gluon splitting in these simulations.

Book Modification of K0s and Lambda AntiLambda Transverse Momentum Spectra in Pb Pb Collisions at sNN 2 76 TeV with ALICE

Download or read book Modification of K0s and Lambda AntiLambda Transverse Momentum Spectra in Pb Pb Collisions at sNN 2 76 TeV with ALICE written by Simone Schuchmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis offers an excellent, comprehensive introduction to the physics of the quark–gluon plasma. It clearly explains the connection between theory and experiment, making the topic accessible to non-specialists in this field. The experimental work, which contributes significantly to our understanding of the quark–gluon plasma, is described in great detail. The results described in the final chapters of the thesis provide interesting new ideas about the connection between proton-proton and Pb-Pb collisions. Simone Schuchmann received the 'ALICE Thesis Award 2016' for this excellent work.

Book Properties of Dijets in Pp PPb and PbPb Collisions

Download or read book Properties of Dijets in Pp PPb and PbPb Collisions written by Doga Can Gulhan and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two dijet measurements, one using 35 pb-1 pPb data at [square root]sNN- 5.02 TeV, and another with 166 [mu]b-1 PbPb and 5.3 pb-1 pp data at [square root]sNN = 2.76 TeV collected with CMS detector at the LHC, are presented. In pPb collisions, the dijet PT ratios, azimuthal angle differences and pseudorapidity distributions are measured and compared to PYTHIA and PYTHIA+HIJING simulations as well as NLO QCD predictions for the latter observable. No significant signs of final state interactions, such as a decrease in the mean dijet PT ratios or a broadening in the correlation of the dijets in azimuthal angle, with increasing forward activity, are observed. The dijet pseudorapidity distributions are also measured, and are sensitive to nuclear PDFs for x values of 0.001 - 0.5. Selections on event activity are found to yield unexpected centrality biases on dijet pseudorapidity distributions, which aided the interpretation of similar biases seen in inclusive jet measurements by ATLAS. In PbPb collisions, a detailed scan of charged particle distributions in correlation with the dijet system is carried out. The PT projection of charged particles on the dijet axis is measured at different distances of [delta] = [mathematical formula ...] 2 with respect to the leading and subleading jet axes. In this way, the spectra and angular distribution of the additional particles, which recover the overall event balance in dijet events with enhanced PT asymmetry in PbPb compared to pp collisions, are obtained up to [delta] = 1.8 in steps of 0.2. A significant excess of low PT particles associated with a subleading jet at large [delta] values is observed, and this excess is shown to get larger for dijet events with PT asymmetry. The scan is carried out for variety of anti-kT R parameters, which provides a way of varying jet width and fragmentation. Medium response to jet quenching at wide angles for jets with different fragmentation is studied. Only an insignificant increase of the magnitude of low PT particle excess at large angles, but a significant increase in the modification of the balance distribution close to the jet axes is observed by increasing R.

Book First Measurement of the B jet Cross Section in Events with a W Boson in P Anti p Collisions at S

Download or read book First Measurement of the B jet Cross Section in Events with a W Boson in P Anti p Collisions at S written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cross section for jets from b quarks produced simultaneously with a W boson has been measured in p{bar p} collision data from 1.9 fb−1 of integrated luminosity recorded by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron. Jets consistent with the decay of long-lived hadrons are selected by identifying a displaced decay vertex. The invariant mass of the charged particle tracks associated with the vertex is sensitive to the flavor of the decaying hadron and is used to determine the fraction of jets from b-quark production. We measure a b-jet cross section of 2.74 ± 0.27(stat.) ± 0.42(syst.) pb in association with one flavor of leptonic W boson decay over a limited kinematic phase space.

Book Multiple Parton Interactions at the LHC

Download or read book Multiple Parton Interactions at the LHC written by Paolo Bartalini and published by World Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many high-energy collider experiments (including the current Large Hadron Collider at CERN) involve the collision of hadrons. Hadrons are composite particles consisting of partons (quarks and gluons), and this means that in any hadron–hadron collision there will typically be multiple collisions of the constituents — i.e. multiple parton interactions (MPI). Understanding the nature of the MPI is important in terms of searching for new physics in the products of the scatters, and also in its own right to gain a greater understanding of hadron structure. This book aims at providing a pedagogical introduction and a comprehensive review of different research lines linked by an involvement of MPI phenomena. It is written by pioneers as well as young leading scientists, and reviews both experimental findings and theoretical developments, discussing also the remaining open issues.
