Book excerpt: Measurements of diffractive dissociation cross sections in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV are presented in kinematic regions defined by the masses MX and MY of the two final-state hadronic systems separated by the largest rapidity gap in the event. The differential cross sections are measured as a function of ?X = M2X /s in the region -5.5 logsub10/sub?subX/sub -2.5, for logsub10/subMsubY/sub 0.5, dominated by single dissociation (SD), and 0.5 log10MsubY/sub 1.1, dominated by double dissociation (DD), where MsubX/sub and MsubY/sub are given in GeV. The inclusive pp cross section is also measured as a function of the width of the central pseudorapidity gap ?? for ?? 3, logsub10/sub MsubX/sub 1.1, and logsub10/subMsubY/sub 1.1, a region dominated by DD. The cross sections integrated over these regions are found to be, respectively, 2.99 ± 0.02(stat)sup+0.32/supsub-0.29/sub(syst) mb, 1.18 ± 0.02(stat) ± 0.13(syst) mb, and 0.58 ± 0.01(stat)sup+0.13/supsub-0.11/sub(syst) mb, and are used to extract extrapolated total SD and DD cross sections. In addition, the inclusive differential cross section, d?/d??supF/sup, for events with a pseudorapidity gap adjacent to the edge of the detector, is measured over ??

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, high-statistics measurements of differential cross sections and recoil polarizations for the reaction $\gamma p \rightarrow K^+ \Sigma^0$ have been obtained using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. We cover center-of-mass energies ($\sqrt{s}$) from 1.69 to 2.84 GeV, with an extensive coverage in the $K^+$ production angle. Independent measurements were made using the $K^{+}p\pi^{-}$($\gamma$) and $K^{+}p$($\pi^-, \gamma$) final-state topologies, and were found to exhibit good agreement. Our differential cross sections show good agreement with earlier CLAS, SAPHIR and LEPS results, while offering better statistical precision and a 300-MeV increase in $\sqrt{s}$ coverage. Above $\sqrt{s} \approx 2.5$ GeV, $t$- and $u$-channel Regge scaling behavior can be seen at forward- and backward-angles, respectively. Our recoil polarization ($P_\Sigma$) measurements represent a substantial increase in kinematic coverage and enhanced precision over previous world data. At forward angles we find that $P_\Sigma$ is of the same magnitude but opposite sign as $P_\Lambda$, in agreement with the static SU(6) quark model prediction of $P_\Sigma \approx -P_\Lambda$. This expectation is violated in some mid- and backward-angle kinematic regimes, where $P_\Sigma$ and $P_\Lambda$ are of similar magnitudes but also have the same signs. In conjunction with several other meson photoproduction results recently published by CLAS, the present data will help constrain the partial wave analyses being performed to search for missing baryon resonances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CDF collaboration has measured the differential elastic cross section d?{sub el}/dt, the single diffraction dissociation double differential cross section d2?{sub sd}/dM2dt and the total inelastic cross section for antiproton-proton collisions at center of mass energies √s = 546 and 1,800 GeV. Data for this measurement have been collected in short dedicated runs during the 1988--1989 data taking period of CDF. The elastic scattering slope is 15.28 ± 0.58 (16.98 ± 0.25) GeV−2 at √s = 546 (1,800) GeV. Using the luminosity independent method (1 +?2)?{sub T} is measured to be 62.64 ± 0.95 (81.83 ± 2.29) mb at √s = 546 (1,800) GeV. Assuming? = 0.15 the elastic, total and single diffraction cross sections are?{sub el} = 12.87 ± 0.30,?{sub T} = 61.26 ± 0.93 and?{sub sd} = 7.89 ± 0.33 mb (?{sub el} = 19.70 ± 0.85,?{sub T} = 80.03 ± 2.24 and?{sub sd} = 9.46 ± 0.44 mb) at √s = 546 (1,800) GeV.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis described in this dissertation uses the Forward Proton Detectors (FPD) installed at the D0 detector in the Tevatron collider at Fermilab to measure the single diffractive differential cross section (dð/(dıtı)) at sqr(s) = 1:96 TeV center of mass energy. The single diffractive events were selected using the DØ central detector and the FPD system and ı t ı of the forward proton are measured using the FPD system. The analysis presents the measurement of the differential cross section of the single diffractive events as a function of ı t ı in the range 0:2

Book excerpt: In high-statistics differential cross sections for the reactions [gamma] p -> p [eta] and [gamma] p -> p [eta]' the CLAS at Jefferson Lab was used to measure the center-of-mass energies from near threshold up to 2.84 GeV. The eta-prime results are the most precise to date and provide the largest energy and angular coverage. The eta measurements extend the energy range of the world's large-angle results by approximately 300 MeV. These new data, in particular the [eta]' measurements, are likely to help constrain the analyses being performed to search for new baryon resonance states.

Book excerpt: Measurements are presented of differential dijet cross sections in low |t| diffractive ep collisions of the type ep->eXY, in which the photon dissociation system X is separated from a leading low mass baryonic system Y by a large rapidity gap. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of 18/pb. Dijet events are identified using the inclusive kt cluster algorithm. The cross sections are corrected to the level of stable hadrons and are measured in the kinematic region Q^20.01 GeV^2 (photoproduction) or 4Q^2
