Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fermilab Experiment 866 has performed an absolute measurement of continuum dimuon (Drell-Yan) cross sections in 800-GeV/c pp and pd interactions. Results differential in the mass, Feynman-x (xF) and transverse momenta (pT) of the dimuon pairs are reported. These results represent the most extensive study of the Drell-Yan process to date, based on a data sample of 175,000 dimuon events covering the widest range in kinematics yet achieved (4.2d"M d"16.85 GeV and -0.05 d"xF d"0.8) with this level of precision. The cross sections are primarily sensitive to the magnitude and shape of the light antiquark distributions ($\bar{d}$(x) and $\bar{u}$(x)) in the nucleon, but also provide important information on the valence quarks as well as the gluons. They are in good agreement with other existing proton-induced Drell-Yan experiments. There is also general agreement between the data and next-to-leading-order calculations based on various sets of parton distribution functions. Differences between data and theory are examined, and the potential impact of these data on future parameterizations of the parton distributions are be discussed.

Book excerpt: The presence of dimuons in final states produced in hadronic interactions has proved to be a valuable indicator that interesting hard physics processes have taken place. These muon pairs provide a mechanism for selecting these relatively rare processes from interactions due to the total cross section. In particular, processes involving heavy quarks are flagged by the presence of muon pairs. We are proposing to use the high rate E705 spectrometer and its dimuon trigger processor which have already functioned well in Experiments E-537 and E-705 to detect and measure several heavy quark phenomena which result in a final state containing a pair of muons. This experiment will use the primary proton beam from the Tevatron at the maximum energy available at the time of execution of the experiment. The spectrometer will be augmented by the addition of a silicon tracker similar to those used in other experiments at the Fermilab. The present P-West High Intensity Laboratory secondary beams will need to be upgraded by addition of sufficient bending power to allow the transport of the 800 to 925 GeV/c primary proton beam to the experiment target (see Appendix A).
