Book excerpt: Mitchell's Story.... Living with Cerebral Palsy is about a mother who has a touching and somewhat sad tale to tell about her only son who contracted the frustrating disease called cerebral palsy. The remarkable thing about this book is the courage displayed by Lynda and Grant Thompson as they began a daily struggle to give their son as normal of a life as they possibly could. Lynda feels that this book can be of great assistance to those who are just now finding out that their son or daughter has this awful disease. She speaks of obstacles she has encountered which can prepare the new parents of CP kids for the challenges that lie ahead. Part of the book deals with the help she received as she was dealing with her son on a day to day basis. Inside the book is information that new parents might find valuable in dealing with and helping their child. We hope that everyone who reads her story will find that it helped him or her in some way.

Book The Lived Experience of Mothers Caring for an Adolescent Or Young Adult with Severe Cerebral Palsy

Download or read book The Lived Experience of Mothers Caring for an Adolescent Or Young Adult with Severe Cerebral Palsy written by Agnes M. Burkhard and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cerebral palsy is one of the most common causes of childhood disability, and a major cause of severe disability in children. Mothers of adolescents and young adults with severe CP often assume a role exceeding the usual normative activities of parenting in relation to the intensity, complexity, and temporal nature of the family caregiving experience. The aim of this phenomenologic inquiry was to explore the lived experience of maternal caregiving as experienced by mothers caring for adolescents and young adults with severe CP. Furthermore, the study sought to examine the essential aspects of this human experience using the phenomenological contextual processing and analysis method proposed by van Manen (1990). Eleven mothers were interviewed using a semi-structured interview format. One overarching theme, A Different Life, and four inter-related essential themes emerged from the narratives. The overarching theme, A Different Life, was revealed in the mothers' stories of their unexpected roles as the parent of a child with severe disabilities. The first essential theme, Managing an Unexpected Life, was uncovered in the experiential descriptions of a maternal caregiver role that included elements that differed from mothers of typically developing children. The second essential theme, Finding My Own Way, was associated with mothers seeking and finding their own approaches to balancing the demands of caregiving and family life. The third essential theme, Serving as My Child's Voice, was revealed in the advocacy activities on behalf of their child and other community members with disabilities; and the fourth essential theme, Facing an Uncertain Future, was uncovered in experiential data suggesting uncertainty associated with their child's age-triggered transitions in the health care and educational settings, and with the prospect of maternal caregiving in the future. Future research is needed to gain a better understanding of the support needs of mothers caring for adolescents and young adults with severe physical disabilities. This study suggests the need for improvements in the delivery of family-centered health care services for adolescents and young adults with severe CP and their families, and the development of interventions to support and sustain family caregivers over the prolonged course of maternal caregiving.

Book Family Needs of Parents of Children and Youth with Cerebral Palsy

Download or read book Family Needs of Parents of Children and Youth with Cerebral Palsy written by Nihad A. Almasri and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2010-08-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is important for professionals who provide medical, rehabilitation, educational, and community services for children and youth with cerebral palsy to provide a quality medical home, family-centered, and needs-based services to address their needs and improve child and family well-being. Knowledge regarding determinants and unique profiles of needs for families of children and youth with cerebral palsy is limited. The aims of this research were to (1) test structural equation models of determinants of three types of family needs of parents of children and youth with cerebral palsy; (2) identify and describe unique profiles of family needs; and (3) examine whether profiles of needs are differentiated based on child, family, and service characteristics. Participants were 579 parents of children and youth with cerebral palsy. Children/youth and their parents completed a modified version of the Family Needs Survey, Family Environment Scale, Coping Inventory, Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment, Measure of Processes of Care, and Services questionnaire. Research assistants determined the Gross Motor Function Classification System levels of the children. The structural models explained 23% of variance in needs related to child condition, 43% of variance in needs related to community and financial resources, and 33% of variance in needs related to family functioning. The determinants of the three models included different combinations of services (accessibility, coordination, processes), family (relationships, income), and child (gross motor function, adaptive behavior, communication problems) characteristics. K-means cluster analysis indicated four unique profiles of needs: Low Needs, Needs Related to Child Health Condition, Needs Related to Community and Financial Resources, and High Needs. Profile membership was differentiated based on child gross motor function and adaptive behavior, family relationships and income, and access to and coordination of services. Families who were included in the profile of low needs commonly reported accessible, coordinated, and family-centered care. The results emphasize the importance of providing medical and family-centered services to address the unique needs of families of children and youth with cerebral palsy. Service providers are encouraged to engage families in expressing their needs, collaborate with families in identifying resources to meet needs, and guide families in navigating complex service systems to address needs.

Download or read book Parents as Care Managers written by GILLIAN. BRIDGE and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume examines the inclusion of disabled children as a category of children in need under the Children Act 1989 and as eligible for assessments of need under the NHS and Community Care Act 1990 has drawn renewed attention to the plight of these children and their families. This book presents the findings from a study of parents whose child has cerebral palsy. The research undertaken at the cost of social policy change focuses on the apparent gap between the well-argued proposals for community care and the experiences of carers. A bewildering picture emerges of inadequate services and treatments from the health, education and social services in the public, voluntary and private sectors. Parents experience isolation and stress as they explore ways to improve the quality of their children's lives by experimenting with unregulated and under-researched treatments for an incurable physical condition. The conclusion that there has been deterioration in provision for these families is a serious indictment on current social policy direction.

Download or read book Cerebral Palsy written by Freeman Miller and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2006-05-08 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a child has a health problem, parents want answers. But when a child has cerebral palsy, the answers don't come quickly. A diagnosis of this complex group of chronic conditions affecting movement and coordination is difficult to make and is typically delayed until the child is eighteen months old. Although the condition may be mild or severe, even general predictions about long-term prognosis seldom come before the child's second birthday. Written by a team of experts associated with the Cerebral Palsy Program at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, this authoritative resource provides parents and families with vital information that can help them cope with uncertainty. Thoroughly updated and revised to incorporate the latest medical advances, the second edition is a comprehensive guide to cerebral palsy. The book is organized into three parts. In the first, the authors describe specific patterns of involvement (hemiplegia, diplegia, quadriplegia), explain the medical and psychosocial implications of these conditions, and tell parents how to be effective advocates for their child. In the second part, the authors provide a wealth of practical advice about caregiving from nutrition to mobility. Part three features an extensive alphabetically arranged encyclopedia that defines and describes medical terms and diagnoses, medical and surgical procedures, and orthopedic and other assistive devices. Also included are lists of resources and recommended reading.

Book excerpt: This book is a testament to a father and mother's courage and undaunted love for their child. Roger, you have written a heart-rendering account that will not only enlighten those who need to persevere, but also those of us who do not count our blessings with any regularity. You have shown that self-sacrifice for your child can be the most poignant reminder to never take our precious lives for granted, that all life is precious, and that joy can be found in caring enough for someone else's happiness.Steve NolanLet me start off by saying I'm a non-reader and I wasn't sure how well I would do on this review but once I started reading this, I read it till the end could not stop. I coached Roger years ago and he was one of the best football players I've coached, and I knew he had a lot of heart and desire, but I had no idea how much heart! I had no idea what a committed human being and dad he was. I actually had him do some work on my house and I was still unaware of all the things going on in his life. There were times that I had to stop reading because of all the emotion that I was experiencing, often wonder how much people can do when faced with certain situations. Most of us will never experience the tough situations that he and his amazing family have had to endure. This was truly enlightening and I'm very fortunate that I was considered to be a part of this journey of Rogers life. Truly an amazing book and I hope that everyone has a chance to read and enjoy the gift that Roger and his entire family have. They are incredible their definitely role models for the rest of us! James McDowell It's been seventeen years, and my son, Kolton, has never spoken one word to me. All I've ever wanted to hear him say is "Daddy" and "I love you." I surround him with conversation every day, desperately waiting for him to speak or even babble words back to me. His mother, Angie, is always playing music in the house and singing to him. Kolton loves music, and I can see that they both love every second of listening to a song together.I vocalize my strengths into my son. Sometimes I whisper things in his ear like "I love you," "You're Daddy's boy," and "I'm so proud of you." I wonder if he really understands me, or if he is able to absorb and remember my words. Heart in every page.

Book My Perfect Son Has Cerebral Palsy

Download or read book My Perfect Son Has Cerebral Palsy written by Marie A. Kennedy and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Copper Mountain College's own Cheyenne Bonnell,PHD give's her review of the book as SCARED IN A HOUSE CALLED LOVE, Rose Whittington's touching memoir of her journey from chilhood to maturity, is a remarkable book in several ways. First, it is remarkable that Rose survived her childhood and became the loving, caring, energetic, and determined person that I know her to be today. Her story is remarkable, also, in the way that it is told. Rose allows the story to unfurl from the child's perspective. Readers experience her childhood the way that Rose did herself. The neglect and abuse Rose suffers is just a part of the world in which she is growing up, and because she writes her narrative from that naive and innocent perspective, readers can experience the horror of her childhood. Rose, an open-hearted and ever hopeful child, distinctively protects the abusive adults on whom she depends; their sordid and immoral lives become so normative, so seeminglly normal to her, that it becomes almost impossible for her not to become just like them. And even so, raised in a climate of low self-esteem, an atmosphere saturated with sex, drugs, violence, spousal abuse, lying, infidelity, and thievery, Rose's true and caring nature triumphs. Although she was scared in a house called love, she hopes to prevent it from happening to others by remembering the pain that she felt and telling her story so that others will not have to live through her pain.
