Book Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines

Download or read book Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines written by D.F.G. Durão and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been said and written about the abilities of modern instrumentation to help solve problems of combustion in engines. In the main, however, the design and fabr ication of combustion chambers continues to be based on extrapolation of exper ience gained from use and rig tests, with little input from advanced techniques such as those based on optical diagnotics. At the same time, it has become increasingly difficult to design better combustion chambers without knowledge of the relevant flow processes. Thus, the future must involve improved understanding which, in turn, will require detailed measurements of velocity, temperature and concentration. The need to narrow the gap between current industrial practice and the acquisition and implementation of improved techniques motivated the organization of the Advanced Study Institute upon which this volume is based. This Institute on Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines was arranged to display the needs of industry and the possibilities made available by modern instrumentation and, at the same time, to make clear the relative advantages of optical and probe techniques. Held at Vimeiro during the period from 13 to 26 September, 1987, the Institute was attended by 120 participants and 16 invited lecturers.

Book Induces Velocity Field of a Jet in a Crossflow

Download or read book Induces Velocity Field of a Jet in a Crossflow written by Richard L. Fearn and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of a subsonic round jet exhausting perpendicularly from a flat plate into a subsonic crosswind of the same temperature was conducted. Velocity and pressure measurements were made in planes perpendicular to the path of the jet for ratios of jet velocity to crossflow velocity ranging from 3 to 10. The results of these measurements are presented in tabular and graphical forms. A pair of diffuse contrarotating vortices is identified as a significant feature of the flow, and the characteristics of the vortices are discussed.

Book Negatively Buoyant Jets in a Cross Flow

Download or read book Negatively Buoyant Jets in a Cross Flow written by Jerry Lee Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Negatively buoyant jets, or sinking jets, can be observed in many problems of pollutant discharge. Any chemical waste that is heavier than the receiving water into which it is discharged may act as a negatively buoyant jet. In addition, when water is taken from the hypolimnion of a deep lake or reservoir and used as cooling water, the temperature, and consequently, the discharge may behave like a negatively buoyant jet. Two existing jet diffusion models have been utilized to predict the trajectory and dilution of a positively buoyant jet, or a rising jet, and have been modified to account for the sinking effect. Twenty-four experimental investigations were conducted involving different combinations of densimetric Froude number, velocity ratios, and initial angle of discharge. Salt was used as the tracer, yielding a fluid that was denser than the ambient receiving water and facilitated measuring concentration profiles of the jet plume. The coefficient of entrainment, the major mechanism of dilution, was determined as a function of the densimetric Froude number, velocity ratio, and initial angle of discharge. The reducted drag coefficient was chosen as zero for both models since any other value would predict a trajectory whose rise would be less than experimentally observed. For all angles of discharge the entrainment coefficient increased with a decrease in the velocity ratio and with an increase in densimetric Froude number. Additionally, there was a marked decrease in the entrainmnet coefficient with a decrease in the initial angle of discharge."--Page ii.

Book Near Field Mixing Characteristics of a Variable Density Non Reacting Jet in a Hot Vitiated Crossflow

Download or read book Near Field Mixing Characteristics of a Variable Density Non Reacting Jet in a Hot Vitiated Crossflow written by Kyle T Linevitch (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mixing characteristics in the "extreme" near field of a non-reacting jet in crossflow were experimentally investigated in an environment relevant to gas turbine combustors. A turbulent jet was injected into a hot vitiated crossflow of combustion products at 1500K. Different jet-to-crossflow momentum flux ratios and jet-to-crossflow density ratios were studied using three different jet exit velocity profiles; a fully developed turbulent pipe flow with 4% turbulence intensity (TI), a top-hat flow with 8% TI, and a turbulent pipe-like flow with 40% TI. Center-plane scalar mixing of the jet and crossflow were investigated using measured temperature fields from planar laser Rayleigh scattering. Jet trajectory, centerline concentration decay, scalar dissipation and mixing time scales were determined as a function of the above-mentioned jet parameters to characterize the jet-crossflow mixing characteristics. The observed center-plane mixing metrics indicated that better near field mixing was exhibited for lower values of the momentum flux ratio and larger values of density ratio. As the momentum flux ratio increased, windward and leeward mixing decreased. The magnitude of scalar dissipation in the windward region decreased as the momentum flux increased, while the leeward dissipation region increased in size and magnitude as momentum flux ratio increased. When the density ratio was decreased, both the windward and leeward dissipation regions reduced in size and magnitude. The top-hat and turbulent pipe jet exit velocity profiles displayed similar mixing characteristics while the 40% TI profile exhibited deeper jet penetration, slower centerline concentration decay rates, and lower scalar dissipation.

Book Characteristics of 3D Turbulent Jets in Crossflow

Download or read book Characteristics of 3D Turbulent Jets in Crossflow written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three dimensional turbulent jets in crossflow at low to medium jet-to-crossflow velocity ratios are computed with a finite volume numerical procedure which utilizes a second-moment closure model to approximate the Reynolds stresses. A multigrid method is used to accelerate the convergence rate of the procedure. Comparison of the computations to measured data show good qualitative agreement. All trends are correctly predicted, though there is some uncertainty on the height of penetration of the jet. The evolution of the vorticity field is used to explore the jet-crossflow interaction.
