Download or read book Molecular Structure by Diffraction Methods written by L E Sutton and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Download or read book Binary Fluorides written by Donald T. Hawkins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coverage For some time, we have contemplated a comprehensive review of the structures and force fields of the binary fluorides. This bibliography of 1498 references marks the first step of that effort. We are pub lishing this material now rather than waiting until the review is complete some two years hence because we believe that the information already accumulated will be of immediate use to a broad spectrum of researchers. Anyone ambitious enough to read through all the articles on binary fluorides will find that the struc tures and force fields of many of these molecules are at present unknown. For example, it has not been clearly established to which point group(s) the lanthanide trifluorides should be assigned. There remain interesting problems relating to the role of Jahn-Teller and pseudo-Jahn-Teller distortions in some of the transition metal fluorides such as VF , MoF , ReF , and ReF , to name only a few. One s s 6 7 also finds fascinating examples of large-amplitude motions, or pseudorotations, as they are often called, in such molecules as XeF 6, I F 7, and PF 5' For those binary fluorides whose equilibrium geometries are precisely known, there still exists the problem of accurately determining the harmonic force field. In a few cases, most notably the Group VA trifluorides, there has been some attempt made at extracting the cubic and quartic contributions to the force field.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Imagination and shrewd guesswork are powerful instruments for acquiring scientific knowledge . . . " 1. H. van't Hoff The last decades have witnessed a rapid growth of quantum chemistry and a tremendous increase in the number of very accurate ab initio calculations of the electronic structure of molecules yielding results of admirable accuracy. This dramatic progress has opened a new stage in the quantum mechanical description of matter at the molecular level. In the first place, highly accurate results provide severe tests of the quantum mecha nics. Secondly, modern quantitative computational ab initio methods can be synergetically combined with various experimen tal techniques thus enabling precise numerical characterization of molecular properties better than ever anticipated earlier. However, the role of theory is not exhausted in disclosing the fundamental laws of Nature and production of ever increasing sets of data of high accuracy. It has to provide additionally a means of systematization, recognition of regularities, and ratio nalization of the myriads of established facts avoiding in this way complete chaos. Additional problems are represented by molecular wavefunctions provided by the modern high-level computational quantum chemistry methods. They involve, in principle, all the information on molecular system, but they are so immensely complex that can not be immediately understood in simple and physically meaningful terms. Both of these aspects, categorization and interpretation, call for conceptual models which should be preferably pictorial, transparent, intuitively appealing and well-founded, being sometimes useful for semi quantitative purposes.

Download or read book Sulphone Molecular Structures written by Istvan Hargittai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, the molecular structures of a relatively large number of sulphone compounds have been elucidated in the vapour phase by electron diffraction and microwave spectroscopy. The main purpose of these studies is the determination of the sulphur bond configuration and the conformational properties. This leads to the observation and correlation of characteristic structural variations as various ligands are attached to the S02 group and as comparisons are made with related molecules. Today it may be said that the structure of sulphone molecules is relatively well studied, and it appeared necessary to systematize the accumulated experimental data after critical considerations. This is done in the first part of this monograph. The second part presents the observed characteristic structural variations. Attempts are made to interpret these variations by valence shell electron pair repulsions and-non-bonded interactions. Correlation relationships between geometric and vibrational parameters are also presented. It is the metrical aspects of the molecular structure which are primarily considered. Since they correlate with other aspects of the molecular structure, e.g. electronic, it is hoped that the experimental information on the molecular geometry provides stim ulus for further experimental, and, in particular, theoretical work on sulphones and related systems. IV It is attempted to cover all electron diffraction and micro wave spectroscopic investigations on sulphone molecules to date. Admittedly, however, relatively larger weight is given to the electron diffraction studies originating from the author's own laboratory.

Download or read book International Tables for Crystallography Mathematical Physical and Chemical Tables written by E. Prince and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-01-16 with total page 1043 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Tables for Crystallography is the definitive resource and reference work for crystallography and structural science. Each of the volumes in the series contains articles and tables of data relevant to crystallographic research and to applications of crystallographic methods in all sciences concerned with the structure and properties of materials. Emphasis is given to symmetry, diffraction methods and techniques of crystal-structure determination, and the physical and chemical properties of crystals. The data are accompanied by discussions of theory, practical explanations and examples, all of which are useful for teaching. Volume C provides the mathematical, physical and chemical information needed for experimental studies in structural crystallography. This volume covers all aspects of experimental techniques, using all three principal radiation types (X-ray, electron and neutron), from the selection and mounting of crystals and production of radiation, through data collection and analysis, to interpretation of results. Each chapter is supported by a substantial collection of references, and the volume ends with a section on precautions against radiation injury. Eleven chapters have been revised, corrected or updated for the third edition of Volume C. More information on the series can be found at: http://it.iucr.org
