Book excerpt: Lyrical and luminous post-Color Field abstractions from a leading Texas painter Dallas-based painter Marcelyn McNeil (born 1965) creates large-scale oil abstractions with brightly colored forms--sometimes lozenge-like, sometimes angular--that drip, bleed and fade into one another. Her recent paintings and site-specific installation works celebrate the power of color and simple, clear gestures. Inspired by artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, McNeil rejects the masculinity of hard-edged abstract painting, instead introducing a sort of lyricism into her work with soft stains and blots of pigment. Often experimenting with perspective and illusion in her work, McNeil also resists the planar quality traditionally associated with abstract painting in favor of a more dynamic relationship to the canvas. With an accompanying interview and essay that provide a framework for engaging with the work, this volume explores the full breadth of this exciting artist's quietly subversive oeuvre, and introduces new ways to consider and experience contemporary abstract painting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on powerful personal testimonies of the hazards of mountaintop removal in southern West Virginia, Combating Mountaintop Removal critically examines the fierce conflicts over this violent and increasingly prevalent form of strip mining. Bryan T. McNeil documents the changing relationships among the coal industry, communities, environment, and economy from the perspective of local grassroots activist organizations and their broader networks. Focusing on Coal River Mountain Watch (CRMW), an organization composed of individuals who have personal ties to the coal industry in the region, the study reveals a turn away from once-strong traditional labor unions and the emergence of community-based activist organizations. By framing social and moral arguments in terms of the environment, these innovative hybrid movements take advantage of environmentalism's higher profile in contemporary politics. In investigating the local effects of globalization and global economics, McNeil tracks the profound reimagining of social and personal ideas such as identity, history, and landscape and considers their roles in organizing an agenda for progressive community activism.

Book excerpt: Foreword INDIES 2020 Book of the Year Award (BRONZE Winner for Religion) "[A] powerful work. . . . Provides a road map for any Christian seeking greater racial justice."--Publishers Weekly Reconciliation is not true reconciliation without justice! Brenda Salter McNeil has come to this conviction as she has led the church in pursuing reconciliation efforts over the past three decades. McNeil calls the church to repair the old reconciliation paradigm by moving beyond individual racism to address systemic injustice, both historical and present. It's time for the church to go beyond individual reconciliation and "heart change" and to boldly mature in its response to racial division. Looking through the lens of the biblical narrative of Esther, McNeil challenges Christian reconcilers to recognize the particular pain in our world so they can work together to repair what is broken while maintaining a deep hope in God's ongoing work for justice. This book provides education and prophetic inspiration for every person who wants to take reconciliation seriously. Becoming Brave offers a distinctly Christian framework for addressing systemic injustice. It challenges Christians to be everyday activists who become brave enough to break the silence and work with others to dismantle systems of injustice and inequality.

Book excerpt: Noelle McNeil was thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition on August 2, 2005. At the time of the accident, Noelle was a twenty year old college sophomore, having the time of her life, attending James Madison University, dating a handsome young man, and looking forward to a bright future. Noelle's life was forever altered by this event. She was rendered unconscious, the victim of a severe traumatic brain injury. She clung precariously to life for 14 days in an intensive care unit. When Noelle did emerge from the coma, she was totally debilitated, confused, and barely able to speak, unable to stand, walk or even swallow. She had to have a feeding tube to receive nourishment. Her prognosis was grim. Noelle was not expected to be able to walk unaided or function independently for the rest of her life. Ninety seven percent of people who sustain this type of injury do not make any appreciable recovery; they are often forced to remain in a hospital type setting for the rest of their lives. Thousands of people prayed for Noelle to recover, their prayers were heard. When she did start to speak, Noelle told her family that during her ordeal, she had gone to heaven, and had an encounter with a spiritual being who told her she could return to earth, and that she would recover, but it would take a long time. Noelle thus began her incredible journey, the journey to regain her self. Noelle remained in a rehab hospital for 5 months, and had to work incredibly hard to redevelop her cognitive abilities, and basic skills, like walking. Noelle made extraordinary progress, despite her devastating injuries. Noelle had to pray for strength to overcome the depression that engulfed her once she became aware of the extent of her injury, and again found this spiritual need met. This is her story, a story of tragedy, of hope, and the power of love. Miracles do happen, Noelle McNeil is living proof.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For every woman who has ever dreamed of starting over, or being a better mother, or just knitting a really nice scarf . . . When her husband dies in a car crash--not long after announcing he wants a divorce--Jo Mackenzie packs up her two rowdy boys and moves from London to a dilapidated villa in her seaside hometown. There, she takes over her beloved Gran's knitting shop--a quaint but out-of-date store in desperate need of a facelift. After a rough beginning, Jo soon finds comfort in a "Stitch and Bitch" group; a collection of quirky, lively women who share their stories, and their addiction to cake, with warmth and humor. As Jo starts to get the hang of single-parent life in a small town, she relies on her knitting group for support. The women meet every week at the shop on Beach Street and trade gossip and advice as freely as they do a new stitch. But when a new man enters Jo's life, and an A-list actress moves into the local mansion, the knitting club has even more trouble confining the conversation to knit one, purl two. The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club is an uplifting, winning tale about the healing power of friendship and new beginnings. It's a charming novel that will delight all passionate knitters--and win over befuddled, would-be knitters, too.
