Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Australia’s north coast is a story of ancient industry and international trade with tentacles that reached as far as China. It tells of travel to the far reaches of the world where an old, mid-19th century Groote Eylandt man, spoke of chasing huge fish across cold seas and hunting furred creatures on seas hard as stone. It’s a story of great, forgotten empires on Australia’s doorstep and rich Sultans who claimed that Australia’s north as their own long before Cook laid eyes on it. It’s a story very few Australians know about. When marine biologist Graeme Dobson asked elders about the origins of a strange stone structure in the middle of a bay, off a tiny island, near the coast of Arnhem Land they replied ‘Not ours’, and so began a remarkable quest that became a mystery wrapped in an adventure, folded into history. His research took him to the far corners of Arnhem Land and into the Seas and Islands to its north. It led him back through time, past missionaries, colonists, huge fishing fleets, Dutch map-makers, Portuguese explorers-come-slavers, unknown settlers and miners, and pearl cultivating tribesmen until he finally found the answer in another bay off another tiny island, this time in the remote Indonesian Aru Islands. This is a mystery/adventure with a difference, plus fascinating insights into little discussed history of northern Australia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish medical missionary-explorer David Livingstone wandered off course in his search for the source of the Nile and died from blood loss in May 1873 in a remote corner of north-eastern Zambia. His heart was buried under a tree in Chief Chitambo's village and his mummified body was carried back to the coast by some of his loyal companions. His remains were returned by sea to Britain and he was given a hero's burial at Westminster Abbey on the 18th. April 1874 Chitambo Hospital was built in memory of Livingstone over a hundred years ago, by his nephew, Malcolm Moffat. Two of Livingstone's grand-children worked there and his youngest daughter, Anna made a pilgrimage to the spot in 1915. Generations of nurses and doctors followed in Livingstone's footsteps and gave of themselves to keep the hospital running. Livingstone's Hospital sets out to tell the story of a vibrant and living memorial to one of history's poorly-understood heroes.

Book History of Walton County

Download or read book History of Walton County written by John Love McKinnon and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1911 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This superb history takes us from the earliest settlement of Walton County, Florida, through its role in the wars and conflicts of the 19th century, to its development as a modern district. John Love McKinnon was a descendant of Colonel John L. McKinnon, who was one of the original founders of Walton County, being part of a trio of white men to first set foot upon the land. The colonel's expeditionary accounts are a significant source for the first part of this history, which discusses the characteristics of the land, the picturesque coastline, and its suitability for settlement. A clear appreciation for natural beauty graces this chronicle; the streams, fields, groves and woods of the land are evocatively described. At first sparsely populated, by the time of the U.S. Civil War many young men of the area were recruited for combat in the Confederacy. Though the area itself escaped skirmishing, several local residents fought in the large battles of the war, such as Chickamauga. On several occasions this history becomes biography, recounting the stories of individual lives and the legacy they left upon the community, be it in military prowess or with establishing the first schools and businesses.
