Book A Life of Bright Ideas

Book excerpt: A secret tore best friends Evelyn "Button" Peters and Winnalee Malone apart. Now, nearly a decade later, a secret brings them back together. Nine years ago Button and Winnalee began recording observations in their Book of Bright Ideas, a tome they believed would solve the mystery of how to live a mistake-free life. Now it's 1970, a time of peace, love, war, and personal heartbreak. Button's mother is dead and her grieving father has all but abandoned his children. Quiet, thoughtful Button has traded college for a sewing job in her mother's bridal shop to help her Aunt Verdella raise her whirlwind six-year-old brother. In Button's free time, she writes letters to the boy she loved from afar through high school, hoping he will come to love her as more than a friend. Then, like that magical Wisconsin summer of '61, Button is greeted with the wild, gusty arrival of Winnalee. Now a beautiful flower child, Winnalee is everything Button is not. She's been to Woodstock and enjoys "free love," but their steadfast bond of friendship is tested as Button begins to notice the cracks in Winnalee's carefree façade. And then Winnalee's mother arrives with a surprise that Button never sees coming, and the fiery determination to put things right in both families once and for all.

Book excerpt: The New York Yacht Club's exclusive gathering at Newport, Rhode Island's Beacon Rock mansion hits stormy seas in the summer of 1900 when reporter Emma Cross, a lesser Vanderbilt, discovers a drowned corpse in Alyssa Maxwell's tenth Gilded Newport Mystery... As a reporter, Emma is used to covering Newport's social events. But this time she is appearing on the arm of her fiancé, Derrick Andrews, at a small but exclusive gathering of the New York Yacht Club at Beacon Rock, the Grecian-inspired summer "cottage" of Edwin and Elizabeth Morgan. The members--which include cousin and Yacht Club Commodore John Pierpoint Morgan and widow Lucy Carnegie, the first woman to be admitted to the Club--are there to discuss their strategy for the next America's Cup Challenge, to be held in New York Harbor the following summer. But it's Emma who must come up with a strategy when she discovers a woman's body bobbing against one of the hulls of the boats moored at the base of Beacon Rock. After the woman is identified as the missing daughter of a yacht designer, the police--with the exception of Emma's friend Detective Jesse Whyte--hastily conclude she is a suicide, perhaps to quiet any scandal for the Morgans. But Emma suspects the woman was murdered and begins to sort through a who's who of sportsmen, boat crews, and the Newport elite in search of a stone-cold killer . . .

Download or read book A Really Strange and Wonderful Time written by Tom Maxwell and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE FIRST BIOGRAPHY OF THE THRIVING AND INFLUENTIAL ROCK SCENE IN CHAPEL HILL, WHICH GAVE THE WORLD ARTISTS LIKE BEN FOLDS FIVE, SUPERCHUNK, AND SQUIRREL NUT ZIPPERS North Carolina has always produced extraordinary music of every description. But the indie rock boom of the late 1980s and early ’90s brought the state most fully into the public consciousness, while the subsequent post-grunge free-for-all bestowed its greatest commercial successes. In addition to the creation of legacy label Merge Records and a slate of excellent indie bands like Superchunk, Archers of Loaf, and Polvo, this was the decade when other North Carolina artists broke Billboard ’s Top 200 and sold millions of records—several million of which were issued by another indie label based in Carrboro, Chapel Hill’s smaller next-door neighbor. It’s time to take a closer look at exactly what happened. A Really Strange and Wonderful Time features a representative cross section of what was being created in and around Chapel Hill between 1989 and 1999. In addition to the aforementioned indie bands, it documents—through firsthand accounts—other local notables like Ben Folds Five, Dillon Fence, Flat Duo Jets, Small, Southern Culture on the Skids, The Veldt, and Whiskeytown. At the same time, it describes the nurturing infrastructure which engendered and encouraged this marvelous diversity. In essence, A Really Strange and Wonderful Time is proof of the genius of community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where to begin? Sometimes poetry can be so complicated and very simple at the same time similar to my life. Collection of Poetry Volume 1 was written over a span exceeding twenty years. In fact, the poem "Tantrum" was written in 1987. I was fourteen that year and submitted that poem for an English class. I don't remember my teacher's name, but I do remember her disbelief. She couldn't believe I had written that piece. Throughout the years of my becoming of age into this adult world, leaving high school, and enrolling in Morgan State University's precollege program, I seemed optimistic about the journey. Only on the surface does the water appear calm, though. Underneath are waves of emotions, searching for a vent to be released in an expressive way, using creativity as the wheel behind the driving force, penetrating the surface, breaking into an atmosphere that is breathable and somewhat refreshing. In the first volume of several to come, the reader will encounter youthful thoughts pertaining to a young man's philosophy on isolation and his struggles of identifying himself without a mirror. We all grow, learn, and develop. But for some, it can be a crash course. For others, it's a breather. It was both for me—yin and yang.
