Book Overflow Metabolism

  • Author : Alexei Vazquez
  • Publisher : Academic Press

  • ISBN : 0128123354
  • Pages : 86 pages

Download or read book Overflow Metabolism written by Alexei Vazquez and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overflow Metabolism: From Yeast to Marathon Runners provides an overview of overflow metabolism, reviewing the major phenomenological aspects as observed in different organisms, followed by a critical analysis of proposed theories to explain overflow metabolism. In our ideal view of metabolism, we think of catabolism and anabolism. In catabolism nutrients break down to carbon dioxide and water to generate biochemical energy. In anabolism nutrients break down to generate building blocks for cell biosynthesis. Yet, when cells are pushed to high metabolic rates they exhibit incomplete catabolism of nutrients, with a lower energy yield and excretion of metabolic byproducts. This phenomenon, characterized by the excretion of metabolic byproducts that could otherwise be used for catabolism or anabolism, is generally known as overflow metabolism. Overflow metabolism is a ubiquitous phenotype that has been conserved during evolution. Examples are the acetate switch in the bacterium E. coli, Crabtree effect in unicellular eukaryote yeasts, the lactate switch in sports medicine, and the Warburg effect in cancer. Several theories have been proposed to explain this seemingly wasteful phenotype. Yet, there is no consensus about what determines overflow metabolism and whether it offers any selective advantage. - Includes examples of overflow metabolism and major phenomenological features - Features a critical view of proposed theories to explain overflow metabolism - Provides a summary of our preview work, proposing molecular crowding as the cause of overflow metabolism, together with new unpublished results

Book Maximum Muscle Minimum Fat

Download or read book Maximum Muscle Minimum Fat written by Ori Hofmekler and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of The Warrior Diet shares his revolutionary approach to physical transformation, offering practical guidance on how to build and maintain a leaner, stronger, and healthier body Diet and fitness books appear at a dizzying rate—and with a wealth of dubious claims—in a culture facing increasing health problems based on a sedentary lifestyle. Ori Hofmekler’s Maximum Muscle, Minimum Fat pulls out of the pack by focusing on the biological principles that dictate muscle gain and fat loss. Written for the widest readership—competitive athletes, bodybuilders, trainers, martial artists, sports nutritionists and coaches, dieters, and anyone concerned about their health—the book builds on the concepts popularized in The Warrior Diet. In simple lay terms, Hofmekler how under-eating and fasting can trigger an anabolic switch that stimulates growth and rejuvenation; how to re-engineer the body at the cellular level to burn fat and build muscles; and how to naturally manipulate the body’s hormones for rapid muscle fusion and faster fat breakdown. He offers smart strategies for: • Taking advantage of hunger to stimulate growth, burn fat, and boost brain power • Turning insulin into a muscle builder instead of a fat gainer • Shattering training and diet plateaus • Improve metabolic function, performance, and your capacity to gain and sustain prime health Challenging most common diet and fitness concepts, Maximum Muscle, Minimum Fat provides a revolutionary way of looking at human performance, shedding new light on how the muscle and fat tissues operate and offering practical information on how to achieve optimal physical health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a timely update to a key textbook on human drug metabolism The third edition of this comprehensive book covers basic concepts of teaching drug metabolism, starting from extreme clinical consequences to systems and mechanisms and toxicity. It provides an invaluable introduction to the core areas of pharmacology and examines recent progress and advances in this fast moving field and its clinical impact. Human Drug Metabolism, 3rd Edition begins by covering basic concepts such as clearance and bioavailability, and looks at the evolution of biotransformation, and how drugs fit into this carefully managed biological environment. More information on how cytochrome P450s function and how they are modulated at the sub-cellular level is offered in this new edition. The book also introduces helpful concepts for those struggling with the relationship of pharmacology to physiology, as well as the inhibition of biotransformational activity. Recent advances in knowledge of a number of other metabolizing systems are covered, including glucuronidation and sulphation, along with the main drug transporters. Also, themes from the last edition are developed in an attempt to chart the progress of personalized medicine from concepts towards practical inclusion in routine therapeutics. The last chapter focuses on our understanding of how and why drugs injure us, both in predictable and unpredictable ways. Appendix A highlights some practical approaches employed in both drug metabolism research and drug discovery, whilst Appendix B outlines the metabolism of some drugs of abuse. Appendix C advises on formal examination preparation and Appendix D lists some substrates, inducers and inhibitors of the major human cytochrome P450s. Fully updated to reflect advances in the scientific field of drug metabolism and its clinical impact Reflects refinements in the author's teaching method, particularly with respect to helping students understand biological systems and how they operate Illustrates the growing relationship between drug metabolism and personalized medicine Includes recent developments in drug discovery, genomics, and stem cell technologies Human Drug Metabolism, 3rd Edition is an excellent book for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacy, and toxicology. It will also appeal to professionals interested in an introduction to this field, or who want to learn more about these bench-to-bedside topics to apply it to their practice.

Book Effect of High Temperature on Crop Productivity and Metabolism of Macro Molecules

Download or read book Effect of High Temperature on Crop Productivity and Metabolism of Macro Molecules written by Amitav Bhattacharya and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-06-14 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effect of High Temperature on Crop Productivity and Metabolism of Macro Molecules presents a comprehensive overview on the direct effect of temperatures defined as "high", a definition which increasingly includes a great number of geographic regions. As temperature impacts the number of base growth days, it is necessary to adapt plant selection, strategize planting times, and understand the expected impact of adaptive steps to ensure maximum plant health and crop yield. Global warming, climate change and change in environmental conditions have become common phrases in nearly every scientific seminar, symposium and meeting, thus these changes in climatic patterns constrain normal growth and reproduction cycles. This book reviews the effect of high temperature on agricultural crop production and the effect of high temperature stress on the metabolic aspects of macro molecules, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, secondary metabolites, and plant growth hormones. - Focuses on the effects of high temperature on agriculture and the metabolism of important macro-molecules - Discusses strategies for improving heat tolerance, thus educating plant and molecular breeders in their attempts to improve efficiencies and crop production - Provides information that can be applied today and in future research
