Book Maximizing the On farm Benefits of Cover Crops

Download or read book Maximizing the On farm Benefits of Cover Crops written by Abbe Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cover crops are gaining in popularity due to efforts from both conservation organizations and farmers for the multiple ecosystem services they can improve. Much is known with regards to ecosystem service provisioning from cover crops, but the information comes mainly from highly controlled field experiments. Published information on farmers cover cropping practices and perspectives are almost exclusively conducted with Midwestern farmers. The purposes of this study were to: 1) Compare farmers intentions for planting cover crops and their perceptions of cover crop performance to the cover crops measured provisioning of ecosystem services, and 2) Characterize east coast attitudes and practices with regards to cover cropping. Farmers representing 47 dairy, grain, or vegetable farms in Pennsylvania participated in a farmer survey that included on-farm cover crop sampling between fall 2014 and spring 2015. They selected between one and five of their farms cover cropped fields for analysis, and recorded their intentions for planting those cover crops upon planting, and their perceptions of the fields contributions upon spring termination. The species, biomass and nutrient content of the cover crop at time of termination were used to calculate the fields potential contributions to five ecosystem services: organic matter provision, erosion reduction, weed suppression, nitrogen provision and nitrogen scavenging. Each fields intention, perception and ecosystem service assessment ratings were compared for correlations. Farmers did not appear to be able to control the level of ecosystem services their cover crop provided to any precise degree: 40-60% of the fields in the study either over or under-contributed as compared to the farmers intended level of ecosystem service provisioning for any given ecosystem service. Farmers were also unable to match their perceptions of outcomes to actual measured outcomes for any ecosystem service other than on the most highly productive fields. The ecosystem services erosion control and N scavenging appeared to be easier to obtain than N provision, weed control or soil organic matter (SOM) provisioning. The results of this study suggest that further educational efforts for cover cropping should help farmers link intangible ecosystem services to visual indicators; justify management for extended duration of living cover over maximizing biomass; and reinforce the fact that successful management for ecosystem services can be accomplished in myriad ways. This information would encourage further planting of cover crops, more accurate perceptions of cover crop performance, and greater overall satisfaction with the practice.

Book Cover Crops and Sustainable Agriculture

Download or read book Cover Crops and Sustainable Agriculture written by Rafiq Islam and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-06-16 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will not serve as the "encyclopedia of cover crop management," but it’s close. The benefits of a wide range of individual cover crops and blends/mixes for specific agronomic crop rotations and geographic locations are included. Descriptions, photographs, and illustrations show how cover crops look in the field, including plant height, leaf architecture, and rooting patterns. Long term benefits are described for soil health, soil structure, water quality, nutrient contributions, soil biodiversity, air quality and climate change. In addition to the "whys" of cover crop use, the book includes details on the "hows:" how to choose cover crops for specific applications and locations; how (and when) to plant; how to manage and maintain the cover for maximum benefit; and how and when to terminate. Planting options include: drilling/planting between rows of an agronomic crop at planting time, or when the crop is short (i.e. corn in early June); "aerial" seeding with an airplane or high-clearance machine shortly before the crop reaches maturity; and drilling/planting immediately after harvest of the agronomic crop. Selected cover crops (blends) can help with pest and disease management. Cover crops are an economic input with an expected return on investment, similar to pesticides and fertilizer. As part of a continuous no-till system, cover crops provide long-term biological, chemical and structural benefits. The resulting increase in soil organic matter means the agronomic crop yields benefit from better water infiltration and water holding capacity, greater availability of nitrogen and other nutrients, deeper rooting, and increased soil microbial activity in the root zone.

Book The Future Proof Farm

Download or read book The Future Proof Farm written by Steve Groff and published by Advantage Media Group. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR FARMERS! WHAT'S GOOD FOR THE EARTH IS GOOD FOR BUSINESS Steve Groff's message to his fellow farmers is profound and prophetic: they are in danger of becoming obsolete. Major market changes are forcing them to make difficult decisions. Farmers who adjust have an opportunity to thrive. Those who do not are likely to fade away. Consumers increasingly demand that the food they eat and the clothes they wear come from producers who observe responsible farming practices such as cover crops and reduced tillage. The major corporate players are positioning themselves for a profitable future. Farmers must do likewise to ensure they will have a continuing market for their goods. To future-proof their farms, they must heal the live-giving soil that sustains their livelihood. Steve Groff knows that what is good for the earth is good for business. He has taken his message across the nation and to the corners of the world, promoting a new mindset that could save the family farm from extinction. This book is his wake-up call.

Book Soil Management

Download or read book Soil Management written by Jerry L. Hatfield and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Degradation of soils continues at a pace that will eventually create a local, regional, or even global crisis when diminished soil resources collide with increasing climate variation. It's not too late to restore our soils to a more productive state by rediscovering the value of soil management, building on our well-established and ever-expanding scientific understanding of soils. Soil management concepts have been in place since the cultivation of crops, but we need to rediscover the principles that are linked together in effective soil management. This book is unique because of its treatment of soil management based on principles—the physical, chemical, and biological processes and how together they form the foundation for soil management processes that range from tillage to nutrient management. Whether new to soil science or needing a concise reference, readers will benefit from this book's ability to integrate the science of soils with management issues and long-term conservation efforts.

Book The Organic No Till Farming Revolution

Download or read book The Organic No Till Farming Revolution written by Andrew Mefferd and published by New Society Publishers. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how to use natural no-till systems to increase profitability, efficiency, carbon sequestration, and soil health on your small farm. Farming without tilling has long been a goal of agriculture, yet tilling remains one of the most dominant paradigms; almost everyone does it. But tilling kills beneficial soil life, burns up organic matter, and releases carbon dioxide. If the ground could instead be prepared for planting without tilling, time and energy could be saved, soil organic matter increased, carbon sequestered, and dependence on machinery reduced. The Organic No-Till Farming Revolution is the comprehensive farmer-developed roadmap showing how no-till lowers barriers to starting a small farm, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, increases efficiency and profitability, and promotes soil health. This hands-on manual offers: Why roller-crimper no-till methods don't work for most small farms A decision-making framework for the four no-till methods: occulation, solarization, organic mulches grown in place, and applied to beds Ideas for starting a no-till farm or transitioning a working farm A list of tools, supplies, and sources. This is the only manual of its kind, specifically written for natural and small-scale farmers who wish to expand or explore chemical-free, regenerative farming methods.
