The local police, the FBI and the Texas Rangers want him behind bars. The town boss and his badass hit man, Flaco, want him dead. So does a swarm of out-of-town killers. Set up to take a hard fall, Gil must survive in a town where no one wants him alive. Book excerpt: Schoolland depicts the daily life of a Mexican American family in rural Texas during the year of a great drought in the 1950Ís. Struggles with nature and society form the backdrop for the eternal tale of a child coming of age as his grandfather is waning. Rural life, dialects and family conflicts are all rendered poetically and with the authenticity of having been born and raised in Schoolland, Gonzales, Smiley, Texas„as was MartÕnez„and with the modern, critical eye of having returned to the family farm to examine the past„as did MartÕnez. We are all, consequently, enriched by this portrayal of Texas Mexican life as it has never before appeared in American literature.

Book Short Fiction By Hispanic Writers of the United States

Download or read book Short Fiction By Hispanic Writers of the United States written by Nicol‡s Kanellos and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Fiction by Hispanic Writers of the United States includes representative works by the most celebrated Cuban-American, Mexican-American and Puerto Rican writers of short fiction in the country. The texts cover a full range of expression, themes and styles of US Hispanics and are introduced by informative entries which place the authors in their cultural and historic frameworks. In these pages, the reader will not find picturesque, folksy or touristy renditions of Hispanic culture. Instead, Short Fiction by Hispanic Writers of the United States brings together works that are clear, incisive and authentic representations of Hispanic life in the United States. The selections are as diverse as Hispanic culture itself and as varied as the personalities of their authors. Here are Max Mart’nezÕs outrageous challenge of racial and social structures, Roberta Fern‡ndezÕs construction of Hispanic womenÕs aesthetics, Roberto Fern‡ndezÕs subversion of the English language, Nicholasa MohrÕs humorous attack on patriarchy, and Judith Ortiz CoferÕs poetic evocation of childhood and biculturalism. This collection engages in aesthetic and cultural experience that will result in a re-defined canon and a new identity for the country as whole. They are re-focusing our perception of ourselves as a people and a culture. The pressure and the commitment to do so, of course, make for excellence and innovation in literary expression. It also makes for enjoyable reading. Short Fiction by Hispanic Writers of the United States is recommended for the general fiction reader and for use in high school and college literature classes in search of a multicultural perspective.

Indeed, this little West Texas town proves to be a place where unusual things often happen. From an enormous crystal skyscraper that mysteriously appears in the middle of the Arroyo Grande SluggersÍ baseball fieldƒa midnight media shower that inspires a pachanga, complete with music and concessions in an abandoned parking lotƒa sudden shift in the whole townÍs circadian rhythms, keeping everyone up at night and asleep during the dayƒa repair shop in town that boasts ñWe Fix Anythingî in the window and even extends the offer to broken heartsƒthis collection of short stories brims with offbeat events. In this, the sequel to The Fabulous Sinkhole and Other Stories, JesÏs Salvador TreviÐo once again populates his hamlet with a lively community. ThereÍs Chicas Patas, a zoot-suited newcomer who speaks a 1940s-era slang; Yoli Mendez, a spunky teen who steals the show by performing quadratic equations in her head; Ed Carillo and Mayor Al Snyder, local politicians who seize every opportunity to campaign; and, a bevy of other interesting and unique citizens of Arroyo Grande.

  • Author : Jesús Salvador Treviño
  • Publisher : Arte Público Press

  • ISBN : 1518500870
  • Pages : 164 pages

Download or read book Return to Arroyo Grande written by Jesús Salvador Treviño and published by Arte Público Press. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the opening piece, “Where Lost Things Reside,” rumor has it that Old Man Baldemar has died. Stories about the old geezer’s demise abound: he died of pneumonia; he was hit by a car, even killed by the big C. All Yoli Mendoza knows is that she’s lost the income from helping the perverse recluse with his grocery shopping. Entering the house she has never been allowed in before, she’s shocked to find it’s much larger than it appears from the street. And even odder, it’s full of items, each tagged with a name, city and date. There’s a room full of cell phones, drawers packed with rings, trays and trays of plastic lids … socks, watches, wallets, glasses! Was Baldemar the caretaker of all of the things that have been lost, no matter the time, city or even country? Weird things continue to happen to the characters that renowned author and filmmaker Jesús Salvador Treviño introduced in his captivating debut, The Fabulous Sinkhole and Other Stories. At the theme park where Choo Choo Torres works, people begin to disappear—and then reappear slightly changed; are they moving back and forth between alternate universes? Charlie Villalobos keeps blacking out and losing days; could it be that he exists only in someone’s dreams? And Jeannie de la Cruz has very distinct memories of seeing her partner Gale run over by a speeding taxi in Mexico City; how can she still be alive? Many in these interrelated stories have left Arroyo Grande to follow their dreams, but in the raucous title story they all return to their hometown in a resounding affirmation of the power of community. Weaving magical realism with issues of loss, memory and identity, Jesús Salvador Treviño once again confirms his place as a powerful storyteller in Chicano—and American—literature. “Fabulous Sinkhole is a collection of stories set primarily in Arroyo Grande, Texas, and each one is connected with the title story by a theme of accident versus coincidence. All of them contain lively, accessible language and demonstrate the author's very gifted sense for storytelling." —Booklist on The Fabulous Sinkhole and Other Stories (starred review)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as the ñChicano NationÍs cultural attach?î and the ñChicano Renaissance Man,î Cecilio GarcÕa-Camarillo served as a central figure in the flourishing of artistic creativity in the late 1960s and the 1970s known as the Chicano Movement. As a publisher, editor, and radio personality, he brought to the publicÍs attention literary works and people that have since become legend, lore, and canon. He exerted cultural leadership not only through his editing of El MagazÕn, Caracol, and Rayas, but in his total dedication to his own poetry, which appeared sparsely in his magazines, but largely in his own hand-stitched chapbooks and through his preferred medium: oral performance. Ironically, GarcÕa-Camarillo, a consummate editor, was diffident about or uninterested in publishing his own works. Thus, for the most part, they have remained only in the memories of those who witnessed their recital; they are also patent strains in the conscience and aesthetics of the many poets he influenced. At last GarcÕa-Camarillo has consented to the publication of selected poems spanning his decades of creativity. In this volume are united works that appeared in thirteen short-run chapbooks that he distributed among friends: ZafaÍo, Crickets, Burning Snow, Carambola, Hang a Snake, Ecstasy, Puro Pedo, and other magical collections. Here are revealed in full GarcÕa-CamarilloÍs gifts to all lovers of poetry: surrealism and social commitment united, joy in poetic discovery, explorations of the terrain between two languages, and an embrace of all people, all cultures, and their creative visions.
