Book excerpt: Max continues in this epic adventure visiting his grandfather in the Great Bear Wilderness, a region so remote that humans are the rare species, but bears are not. One particular bear, the Spirit Bear, actually a "black" bear is white and a subject of legend. Only a few have been sighted. Max's curiosity gets the better of him. He wanders from the safety of his grandfather's cabin, soon to be lost in the wilderness. A chance encounter brings Max and Tonkawa, a young Spirit Bear, together, who has also wandered away from the safety of his home. Both lost, they find each other. As night descends, they hunker down for the night, knowing their parents must be desperately looking for them. Protecting young from harm is universal amongst parents, bears and humans alike. Although Tonkawa has been taught to fear humans, and soon Max and Tonkawa find themselves depending upon each other for survival. Max and Tonkawa soon become friends and teach each other cool things that neither knew about. Soon Tonkawa learns that not all humans are dangerous to their survival. Upon being reunited, and considered naïve, Tonkawa struggles to explain to his bear clan that together - bears and humans - can help protect the Great Bear Wilderness. But all of that is soon to change when an oil tanker runs around, spilling its toxic oil, threatening the wilderness - its coast lines and the salmon runs the bears depend upon. It seems like the adult bears' fears appear justified. In a surprising alliance, Max enlists Grandpa's friends in a desperate but heroic attempt to save Great Bear Wilderness from imminent destruction. This story illustrates that the youngest - children - can teach adults, both bear and human, that our prejudices and fear of each other is not necessary. We hold in common shared interests to help protect the natural environment and ultimately each other.

Book Touching Spirit Bear

Download or read book Touching Spirit Bear written by Ben Mikaelsen and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2010-04-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Nautilus Award-winning classic Touching Spirit Bear, author Ben Mikaelson delivers a powerful coming-of-age story of a boy who must overcome the effects that violence has had on his life. After severely injuring Peter Driscal in an empty parking lot, mischief-maker Cole Matthews is in major trouble. But instead of jail time, Cole is given another option: attend Circle Justice, an alternative program that sends juvenile offenders to a remote Alaskan Island to focus on changing their ways. Desperate to avoid prison, Cole fakes humility and agrees to go. While there, Cole is mauled by a mysterious white bear and left for dead. Thoughts of his abusive parents, helpless Peter, and his own anger cause him to examine his actions and seek redemption—from the spirit bear that attacked him, from his victims, and, most importantly, from himself. Ben Mikaelsen paints a vivid picture of a juvenile offender, examining the roots of his anger without absolving him of responsibility for his actions, and questioning a society in which angry people make victims of their peers and communities. Touching Spirit Bear is a poignant testimonial to the power of a pain that can destroy, or lead to healing. A strong choice for independent reading, sharing in the classroom, homeschooling, and book groups.

Book Shapeshifting with Our Animal Companions

Download or read book Shapeshifting with Our Animal Companions written by Dawn Baumann Brunke and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-06-24 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journeys with animals for personal transformation and enlightenment • Reveals how shapeshifting with the animal kingdom allows us to experience different forms of consciousness and expand our perception of the world • Examines the three phases of transforming consciousness: letting go, opening to experience, and integrating awareness • Explores how shapeshifting provides an understanding of death as a transformation rather than an ending In Shapeshifting with Our Animal Companions, Dawn Baumann Brunke moves beyond the “how” and “why” of animal communication presented in her earlier books to a profound journey of shared spiritual awareness. Through conversations, dreams, and merged consciousness with a variety of animals and spirit beings, she reveals the vast treasure of wisdom and experiences offered to us as we open ourselves to the consciousness of others, confront and release our fears of death, and expand our sensory perception to include other modes of existence. Brunke reveals how by shapeshifting--moving in and out of shared awareness with others and particularly animals--we may better understand and embrace the diversity of consciousness in our world as we learn to awaken our true selves. Through encounters with shapeshifting animal teachers, she explores the three stages of transforming consciousness: letting go of old ideas and habitual modes of perception, experiencing different forms of consciousness through the eyes of others, and integrating these experiences into a greater awareness of our own being--thus discovering the deeper nature of who we all really are.

Book Grizzly Heart

Download or read book Grizzly Heart written by Charlie Russell and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An absorbing first-hand account of living with bears, from the acclaimed author of The Spirit Bear. To many people, grizzlies are symbols of power and ferocity -- creatures to be feared and, too often, killed. But Charlie Russell, who has had a forty-year relationship with bears, holds the controversial belief that it is possible to live with and truly understand bears in the wild. And for five years now, Russell and his partner, artist and photographer Maureen Enns, have spent summers on the Kamchatka peninsula, located on the northeast coast of Russia, and home of the densest population of brown bears in the world. Grizzly Heart tells the remarkable story of how Russell and Enns have defied the preconceptions of wildlife officials and the general public by living unthreatened -- and respected -- among the grizzlies of Kamchatka. In an honest and immediate style, Russell tells of the trials and successes of their years in the field, from convincing Russian officials to allow them to study, to adopting three bear cubs left orphaned when their mother was killed by a hunter (and teaching these cubs how to survive in the wild), to raising environmental awareness through art. Through a combination of careful study and personal dedication, Russell and Enns are persuading people to reconsider the age-old image of the grizzly bear as a ferocious man-eater and perpetual threat. Through their actions, they demonstrate that it is possible to forge a mutually respectful relationship with these majestic giants, and provide compelling reasons for altering our culture. "We have been able to live beautifully with these animals, with no serious threat, because of what we've learned. Hopefully, sharing what we learn will help people -- and be a big help to our bears, too."
