Book excerpt: An “insidious, suspenseful tale” (J.T. Ellison) with a “shocker of an ending you won’t see coming” (Michele Campbell), Because You're Mine by Rea Frey, the author who “brings to mind Jodi Picoult” (Booklist) and “will appeal to readers of Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen” (Sally Hepworth) is a novel about how the truth will set you free. But it’s the lies that keep you safe. Single mother Lee has the daily routine down to a science: shower in six minutes. Cut food into perfect squares. Never leave her on-the-spectrum son Mason in someone else’s care. She’ll do anything—anything—to keep his carefully constructed world from falling apart. Do anything to keep him safe. But when her best friend Grace convinces her she needs a small break from motherhood to recharge her batteries, Lee gives in to a weekend trip. Surely a long weekend away from home won’t hurt? Noah, Mason’s handsome, bright, charismatic tutor—the first man in ages Lee’s even noticed—is more than happy to stay with him. Forty-eight hours later, someone is dead. But not all is as it seems. Noah may be more than who he claims to be. Grace has a secret—one that will destroy Lee. Lee has secrets of her own that she will do anything to keep hidden. And what will happen to Mason, as the dominoes begin to fall and the past comes to light? Perhaps it's no mystery someone is gone after all... Because You're Mine is a breathtaking novel of domestic drama and suspense. Prepare to stay up all night.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being blessed to have traveled extensively around the world, I have had the pleasure to truly see the differences and the similarities of all humans upon this earth. It is not an easy thing to see people suffering in their lives and not be moved to some kind of action or at the least speak openly about it. Bringing attention to things that can be changed, that often is ignored, because no one wants to be responsible for speaking out against wrong. Seeing that if a situation isn't directly affecting a person, then it seems to not be important to help change it. I am compelled to often write about the common things in life that effects every human, yet for some reason or another, no one wants to address. Life is about growth, not living in denial about what can be made right. Everyone in this life deserves a chance to have joy, peace and happiness, without others pressing their ways upon them. I believe that, we are our worst enemies and until we come to the realization that most of our suffering in life comes from ourselves, and we have the power within ourselves to change that. Then and only then will this world be the place it was intended to be. I encourage all who read this book, to be encouraged, and know that there is nothing in this world you can't overcome. Just believe in yourself, and never give up.

Book The King of Infinite Space

Download or read book The King of Infinite Space written by Lyndsay Faye and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lush, magical, queer, and feminist take on Hamlet in modern-day New York City, a neuro-atypical physicist, along with his best friend Horatio and artist ex-fiancé, Lia, are caught up in the otherworldly events surrounding the death of his father. Meet Ben Dane: brilliant, devastating, devoted, honest to a fault (truly, a fault). His Broadway theater baron father is dead—but on purpose or by accident? The question rips him apart. Unable to face alone his mother's ghastly remarriage to his uncle, Ben turns to his dearest friend, Horatio Patel, whom he hasn't seen since their relationship changed forever from platonic to something...other. Loyal to a fault (truly, a fault), Horatio is on the first flight to New York City when he finds himself next to a sly tailor who portends inevitable disaster. And who seems ominously like an architect of mayhem himself. Meanwhile, Ben's ex-fiancé, Lia, sundered her from her loved ones thanks to her addiction recovery and torn from her art, has been drawn into the fold of three florists from New Orleans—seemingly ageless sisters who teach her the language of flowers, and whose magical bouquets hold both curses and cures. For a price. On one explosive night these kinetic forces will collide, and the only possible outcome is death. But in the masterly hands of Lyndsay Faye, the story we all know has abundant surprises in store. Impish, captivating, and achingly romantic, this is Hamlet as you've never seen it before.

And when you put the book down to go on with your life, ask yourself, Who can you really trust? Surrounded by friends and strangers both indebted and worshipful--from Alex, her housekeeper, boyfriend Connor, employees, law enforcement and those on the other side of the law, Victoria LeJeune should feel safe and loved. Yet, abandoned by her mother as a child, she is plagued by loneliness. Working to battle the human-trafficking problem in New Orleans helps a bit until the deaths of her friends bring her loneliness to the surface once again. Aided by New Orleans police detective Bryan Thibodeaux—her childhood friend--Victoria determines that her work against human trafficking is the only link to the murdered women. Feeling confused and overwhelmed by uncertainty, Victoria and Bryan drive down the bayou to visit her Cajun grandmother (and Voodoo priestess) for guidance and wisdom. Victoria also turns for information to wealthy, vampire-coven leader Stuart Bastogne, the one man she’s ever truly loved, and Bryan’s arch enemy. Despite his own shady business dealings, Stuart partners with FBI agent Robert Landers to share tips from both sides of the law. Landers, investigating a diamond-smuggling ring in New Orleans, sidesteps department regulations to get closer to Victoria, all in the line of duty, of course. Surprising twists and turns of events lead to everyone’s increasing desperation to prevent another gruesome murder. As this shifting group of Victoria’s friends, lovers, and enemies seeks answers, they learn about themselves, each other and the greying line between good and evil.

  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2015-01-08
  • ISBN : 0698144929
  • Pages : 231 pages

Download or read book Hall of Small Mammals written by Thomas Pierce and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-01-08 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wild, inventive ride of a short story collection from a distinctive new American storyteller. The author of the forthcoming novel, The Afterlives. The stories in Thomas Pierce’s Hall of Small Mammals take place at the confluence of the commonplace and the cosmic, the intimate and the infinite. A fossil-hunter, a comedian, a hot- air balloon pilot, parents and children, believers and nonbelievers, the people in these stories are struggling to understand the absurdity and the magnitude of what it means to exist in a family, to exist in the world. In “Shirley Temple Three,” a mother must shoulder her son’s burden—a cloned and resurrected wooly mammoth who wreaks havoc on her house, sanity, and faith. In “The Real Alan Gass,” a physicist in search of a mysterious particle called the “daisy” spends her days with her boyfriend, Walker, and her nights with the husband who only exists in the world of her dreams, Alan Gass. Like the daisy particle itself—“forever locked in a curious state of existence and nonexistence, sliding back and forth between the two”—the stories in Thomas Pierce’s Hall of Small Mammals are exquisite, mysterious, and inextricably connected. From this enchanting primordial soup, Pierce’s voice emerges—a distinct and charming testament of the New South, melding contemporary concerns with their prehistoric roots to create a hilarious, deeply moving symphony of stories.

These horrific transgressions left his father hanging from a tree and ripped Tibias' hometown apart before he ever took a breath. But the lessons that he learns from his mother, her new friend, Sergeant Luke Worthy, and an eccentric newcomer to Principle, Adam Zur, will give him the strength to believe that the impossible can happen and keep him from experiencing his father's fate. Deceit is brought to light, and the deeds of death will discover justice as the festering wounds of a town's heart are exposed to the divine love that can heal it.
