Book Topics in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Atmospheric Dynamics Dynamo Theory and Climate Dynamics

Download or read book Topics in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Atmospheric Dynamics Dynamo Theory and Climate Dynamics written by M. Ghil and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vigorous stirring of a cup of tea gives rise, as we all know, to interesting fluid dynamical phenomena, some of which are very hard to explain. In this book our "cup of tea" contains the currents of the Earth's atmosphere, oceans, mantle, and fluid core. Our goal is to under stand the basic physical processes which are most important in describing what we observe, directly or indirectly, in these complex systems. While in many respects our understanding is measured by the ability to predict, the focus here will be on relatively simple models which can aid our physical intuition by suggesting useful mathematical methods of investiga tion. These elementary models can be viewed as part of a hierarchy of models of increasing complexity, moving toward those which might be use fully predictive. The discussion in this book will deal primarily with the Earth. Interplanetary probes of Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn have revealed many exciting phenomena which bear on geophysical fluid dynamics. They have also enabled us to see the effect of changing the values of certain parameters, such as gravity and rotation rate, on geophysical flows. On the other hand, satellite observations of our own planet on a daily and hourly basis have turned it into a unique laboratory for the study of fluid motions on a scale never dreamt of before: the motion of cyclones can be observed via satellite just as wing tip vortices are studied in a wind tunnel.

Download or read book Reacting Flows written by G. S. S. Ludford and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1986-12-31 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes represent the culmination of the Special Year `84-'85 in Reacting Flows held at Cornell University. As the proceedings of the 1985 AMS/SIAM Summer Seminar in Applied Mathematics, the volumes focus on both mathematical and computational questions in combustion and chemical reactors. They are addressed to researchers and graduate students in the theory of reacting flows. Together they provide a sound basis and many incentives for future research, especially in computational aspects of reacting flows. Although the theory of reacting flows has developed rapidly, researchers in the two subareas of combustion and chemical reactors have not communicated. The main goal of this seminar was to synthesize the mathematical theory and bring it to the interface with large-scale computing. All of the papers have high research value, but the first five introductory lectures should be especially noted.

Book Treatise on Geophysics Volume 8

Download or read book Treatise on Geophysics Volume 8 written by Peter L. Olson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-05-18 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treaties on Geophysics: Core Dynamics, Volume 8, provides a comprehensive review of the current state of understanding of core dynamics. The book begins by analyzing a subject of long-standing and on-going controversy: the gross energetics of the core. It then explains the important elements of dynamo theory; actual fluid motions in the core; the basic physical principles involved in thermochemical convection in the core and the basic equations governing the convection; and turbulence and the small-scale dynamics of the core. This is followed by discussions of the state of knowledge on rotation-induced core flows; the use of first-principles numerical models of self-sustaining fluid dynamos; and the behavior of polarity reversals in numerical dynamo models. The remaining chapters cover the various roles the inner core plays in core dynamics and the geodynamo; experiments that have shaped knowledge about the flows in the core that produce the geodynamo and govern its evolution; and ways the mantle can affect core dynamics, and corresponding ways the core can affect the mantle. - Self-contained volume starts with an overview of the subject then explores each topic with in depth detail - Extensive reference lists and cross references with other volumes to facilitate further research - Full-color figures and tables support the text and aid in understanding - Content suited for both the expert and non-expert

Book Computational Solution of Nonlinear Systems of Equations

Download or read book Computational Solution of Nonlinear Systems of Equations written by Eugene L. Allgower and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1990-04-03 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear equations arise in essentially every branch of modern science, engineering, and mathematics. However, in only a very few special cases is it possible to obtain useful solutions to nonlinear equations via analytical calculations. As a result, many scientists resort to computational methods. This book contains the proceedings of the Joint AMS-SIAM Summer Seminar, ``Computational Solution of Nonlinear Systems of Equations,'' held in July 1988 at Colorado State University. The aim of the book is to give a wide-ranging survey of essentially all of the methods which comprise currently active areas of research in the computational solution of systems of nonlinear equations. A number of ``entry-level'' survey papers were solicited, and a series of test problems has been collected in an appendix. Most of the articles are accessible to students who have had a course in numerical analysis.

Book Exploiting Symmetry in Applied and Numerical Analysis

Download or read book Exploiting Symmetry in Applied and Numerical Analysis written by Eugene L. Allgower and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1993 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symmetry plays an important role in theoretical physics, applied analysis, classical differential equations, and bifurcation theory. Although numerical analysis has incorporated aspects of symmetry on an ad hoc basis, there is now a growing collection of numerical analysts who are currently attempting to use symmetry groups and representation theory as fundamental tools in their work. This book contains the proceedings of an AMS-SIAM Summer Seminar in Applied Mathematics, held in 1992 at Colorado State University. The seminar, which drew about 100 scientists from around the world, was intended to stimulate the systematic incorporation of symmetry and group theoretical concepts into numerical methods. The papers in this volume have been refereed and will not be published elsewhere.

Book Tomography Impedance Imaging and Integral Geometry

Download or read book Tomography Impedance Imaging and Integral Geometry written by Eric Todd Quinto and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1991 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most exciting features of tomography is the strong relationship between high-level pure mathematics (such as harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, microlocal analysis, and group theory) and applications to medical imaging, impedance imaging, radiotherapy, and industrial nondestructive evaluation. This book contains the refereed proceedings of the AMS-SIAM Summer Seminar on Tomography, Impedance Imaging, and Integral Geometry, held at Mount Holyoke College in June 1993. A number of common themes are found among the papers. Group theory is fundamental both to tomographic sampling theorems and to pure Radon transforms. Microlocal and Fourier analysis are important for research in all three fields. Differential equations and integral geometric techniques are useful in impedance imaging. In short, a common body of mathematics can be used to solve dramatically different problems in pure and applied mathematics. Radon transforms can be used to model impedance imaging problems. These proceedings include exciting results in all three fields represented at the conference.

Book Vortex Dynamics and Vortex Methods

Download or read book Vortex Dynamics and Vortex Methods written by Christopher Radcliff Anderson and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1991-12-23 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding vortex dynamics is the key to understanding much of fluid dynamics. For this reason, many researchers, using a great variety of different approaches--analytical, computational, and experimental--have studied the dynamics of vorticity. The AMS-SIAM Summer Seminar on Vortex Dynamics and Vortex Methods, held in June 1990 at the University of Washington in Seattle, brought together experts with a broad range of viewpoints and areas of specialization. This volume contains the proceedings from that seminar. The focus here is on the numerical computation of high Reynolds number incompressible flows. Also included is a smaller selection of important experimental results and analytic treatments. Many of the articles contain valuable introductory and survey material as well as open problems. Readers will appreciate this volume for its coverage of a wide variety of numerical, analytical, and experimental tools and for its treatment of interesting important discoveries made with these tools.
