Book Queueing Network Models of Multiprogramming

Download or read book Queueing Network Models of Multiprogramming written by Jeffrey P. Buzen and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model is developed which represents the behavior of multiprogrammed computer systems in terms of a network of interdependent queues. This model, which is known as the central server model of multiprogramming, is first analyzed mathematically and then applied to three problems in operating system design. These are: The optimal choice of buffer size for tape-like devices; The optimal allocation of processing requests among a set of functionally equivalent peripheral processors such as disks and drums; The optimal selection of the degree of multiprogramming in demand paging systems. A series of computational algorithms are developed to supplement the analytic work. These algorithms can be used to obtain the marginal distributions and expected queue lengths for a large class of queueing network models. (Author).

Book Modelling of Computer and Communication Systems

Download or read book Modelling of Computer and Communication Systems written by I. Mitrani and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1987-10 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1987 book is a self-contained text on the probabilistic modelling method. It provides the reader with an understanding of the available results as well as with examples of their application. The only background assumed is a knowledge of basic calculus. The necessary fundamentals of probability are presented followed by an introduction to stochastic processes. The remainder of the book is devoted to the treatment of various single-station and their application to uni-programmed and multi-programmed systems and local and wide-area networks. Both exact and approximate solution methods are discussed, with as much emphasis on explaining the ideas and providing information, as on derivations and proofs. This book will still be of use for anyone with an interest in the history of computer science.

Book Study of Multiprogrammed Computer Systems with Memory Hierarchies

Download or read book Study of Multiprogrammed Computer Systems with Memory Hierarchies written by Rodrigo Querubin and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possibility of using queueing networks to study the performance of multiprogrammed computer systems that use memory hierarchies was investigated. It was found that these kinds of models are adequate provided the success function of the memory hierarchy is known. A stochastic algorithm to obtain the success function of the hierarchy was developed. The results obtained, whenever this model is used in conjunction with the queueing network, were extensively compared with conventional simulation techniques, and the accuracy found to be within five percent. The problem of scheduling the Central Processor was considered, and empirical algorithms to determine policies that set upper and lower bounds on the success function of the hierarchy were proposed. Mathematical methods were employed to analyze various system configurations, that include several input-output channels and processors. (Author).
