The primary purpose of the study was to develop a model to simulate the mechanism of mass transfer between a continuous phase and the bubbles of a dispersed phase in a distillation column. The second major purpose of this work was to utilize and test the model of estimating the tray efficiency. Distillation was considered to be purely a mass transfer process, where the less volatile component is transferred from vapor to liquid phase, and the more volatile component from liquid to vapor phase. The theoretical analysis of mass transfer consisted of (1) convective mass transfer during bubble formation and (2) unsteady-state molecular diffusion of bubbles to the continuous phase. In a plate column, plug flow was assumed as the liquid flow pattern across the plate, from the submerged inlet weir to the overflow outlet weir. The material and energy balances were modeled to a section perpendicular to the direction of liquid flow on the plate. The model was used in studying the following: (1) a binary separation using a one-stage column having a single-bubble cap; (2) a binary separation in a multi-stage column with a single-bubble cap; a binary separation in amulti-stage column with a given multi-cap arrangement; and a ternary separation in a multi-stage column with two bubble caps. The comparisons of the model predictions, with the data obtained from published literature, showed that the model can successfully simulate distillation operations.

Book excerpt: Catalytic Distillation (CD) is a form of process intensification where a heterogeneously catalyzed reaction is performed in a distillation unit. This fusion of functions has been shown to have the potential to reduce capital costs, operating costs and environmental impacts. It is hypothesized that a fundamental mathematical model of both the mass/heat transfer and reaction kinetics is required to accurately predict the behaviour of even perceived simple kinetic equation reactions performed in a CD column, and that such a validated model can yield a deeper understanding of the dynamics in such systems. To achieve this, 1-hexene hydrogenation Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics were derived and fitted to experimental semi-batch data. The reaction kinetics were then included in a non-equilibrium distillation model which was compared to experimental CD hydrogenation data. The reaction kinetics and mass transfer correlation coefficients were then fitted to the CD data. The methodology detailed here should be useful to those interested in combining experimental data, simulation and statistical analyses in the field of CD.

Book excerpt: In this chapter, an algorithm for the solution of the mathematical model featuring steady-state multicomponent distillation columns is analyzed and applied in the case study of the separation of hydrocarbon mixture. The development of the model has assumed each stage outlet streams in thermodynamic equilibrium in the phases liquid and vapor. The modeling of liquid was considerate and the non-ideality behavior was described by activity. The non-ideality of gas phase was calculated by Peng-Robinson equation of state. The model consists of a set of nonlinear algebraic equations. The algorithm and numerical procedure to solve a set of equations are presented in a sequential, general and very simple form. A methodology to produce the good initial guess was defined based on rude simplifications of the system. In the study case, the initial estimates generated by the method are very good, being only about 20% far from the simulation results and considering a tolerance of 10−10, the convergence was obtained with 28 iterations.
