Book Trends in Soviet Theoretical Linguistics

Download or read book Trends in Soviet Theoretical Linguistics written by F. Kiefer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: o. Theoretical linguistics is a term not very often used in Soviet Linguistics. The terms 'structural linguistics', 'mathematical linguistics', 'applied lin guistics' (which, incidentally, has another meaning here than in other parts of the world) all may cover theoretical work in linguistics. In older days serious theoretical work was done under the heading 'machine translation'. Very often the need for a special term for theoretically oriented studies in linguistics does not even arise. Does this mean that there is no real theoretical linguistics in the Soviet Union? This would be, of course, a completely false conclusion. Some lin guists tend to identify theoretical linguistics with generative grammar. Though it might be true - and I am myself very much inclined to subscribe to this view - that generative grammar has been the most fruitful linguistic theory up to now, this does not justify, however, the above identification. Incidentally, as we shall see later on, generative grammar has not been left unnoticed in the Soviet Union either. There are different trends within theo retical linguistics, one of which is generative grammar. While generative grammar (though one can worry about the content of this notion for many. internal and external reasons) seems to be the mean theoretical trend in the United States and in Western Europe, it represents only one of the main trends in Soviet linguistics.

Book Case and Gender

Download or read book Case and Gender written by Willem Andries Helden and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1993 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cybernetic dream which pervades Soviet bureaucracy after Stalin produced a relatively liberal and generous science policy. In linguistics, the new spirit gave rise to a variety of trends professing to practise structural, mathematical or applied linguistics, and promising practical applications in natural language processing. The trends originating in the sixties comprise the so-called Set-theoretical School. In 1957 the mathematician Kolmogorov confronted the participants of a seminar on mathematical linguistics with a few pilot questions, such as what exactly do we mean when we say that two words are in the same case? The rigorous answers which the Set-theoretical School worked out for Kolmogorov's questions turned out to have far-reaching implications for linguistic theory.Case and Genderexamines both the contextual and the internal development of the Set-theoretical School. The rise and decline of the School can be ascribed to Soviet humanities policy, while the specifics of its linguistic development can be attributed to the non-linguistic backgrounds and applied goals of its first exponents. The two volumes contain a systematic account of the networks of definitions (models) proposed by the School, and provide a metamodel which facilitates providing a consistent formalization of the models and uncovering their implicit assumptions on the properties of language. The metamodel also enables an orderly comparison of the models with one another and with terminological systems developed elsewhere. Moreover, the models are evaluated, amended, and confronted with linguistic material from various languages. The later chapters are concluded with more far-reaching proposals. Kolmogorov's questions must be taken seriously. The turn toward a semantics-orientated approach which is evident in the last stage of the development of the Set-theoretical School must be pursued. New definitions of 'case' and 'gender' are proposed in accordance with the new approach.Case and Gendercontains not only an analytical survey of the complete scientific output of the Set-theoretical School on morphology and syntax but also a confrontation with contemporary western theories. It shows the viability of a tradition which was abandoned as a result of political developments. The long chapter on the history of the relationship between linguistics and politics in the Soviet Union contains new material on the 1950 linguistic discussion in Pravda, which was decided by Stalin's contribution and whose impact would last for decades to come.

Book Exact Methods in Linguistic Research

Download or read book Exact Methods in Linguistic Research written by O. S. Akhmanova and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exact Methods in Linguistic Research: Translated From the Russian The present book is an attempt to throw some light on several results attained by science in the area of the applications Of ex act methods to linguistic research. The concept of exact meth ods in science, and of exact sciences, is inseparably bound with mathematics - whence the expression mathematical linguistics to designate this new direction in linguistic research. It is hardly proper, however, to elevate this expression to the level of a technical term, since such a term could lead to a distorted conception of the nature Of the question. The essence of this di rection and its real content consist not Of creating some special kind of linguistics, but rather Of perfecting, of making accu rate, reliable, and modern, the methods Of linguistic research in the usual meaning of the word. Thus, it is clear that the au thors would prefer to eliminate the phrase mathematical lin guistics from the title of the present book.1 It is impossible, however, to ignore the fact that this term has already attained a certain popularity, and therefore it seems inexpedient to avoid it altogether. The book has four sections,2 dealing with the following top Ics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Science In Moscow Memorials Of A Research Empire

Download or read book Science In Moscow Memorials Of A Research Empire written by Hargittai Magdolna and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moscow is the center of science and higher education of Russia and is also an international hub of science. There have been milestone achievements of science in Russia (and the Soviet Union), especially in the areas of physics, chemistry, mathematics, the conquest of space, various technologies and medicine. However, the scientists and inventors often created in isolation and have become less known than their discoveries would justify. At the same time, there is no other city in the world that has so many memorials honoring scientists as Moscow. There is a caveat in that political considerations have often influenced who was remembered and who was not. This book presents statues, memorial plaques, and historical buildings. Not only celebrated excellences are mentioned, but also some of the greats that perished during the years of terror. The book is full of human drama and 750 photos illustrate the narrative. Science in Moscow follows Budapest Scientific and New York Scientific and is the third in the series about memorials of scientists in great cities of the world.
