Book Mathematical and Physical Papers Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mathematical and Physical Papers Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by George Gabriel Stokes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematical and Physical Papers, Vol. 1 Although notes are added here and there, I have not attempted to bring the various papers up to the level of the present time. I have not accordingly as a rule alluded to later researches on the same subject, unless for some special reason. The notes introduced in the reprint are enclosed in square brackets in order to distin guish them from notes belonging to the original papers. To the extent of these notes therefore, which were specially written for the reprint, the chronological arrangement is departed from. The same is the case as regards the last paper in the first volume, which suggested itself during the preparation for press of the paper to which it relates. In reprinting the papers, any errors of inadvertence which may have been discovered are of course corrected. Mere corrections of this kind are not specified, but any substantial change or omission is noticed in a foot-note or otherwise. Book Kinetic Theory Of Gases The An Anthology Of Classic Papers With Historical Commentary

Download or read book Kinetic Theory Of Gases The An Anthology Of Classic Papers With Historical Commentary written by Stephen G Brush and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-07-28 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces physics students and teachers to the historical development of the kinetic theory of gases, by providing a collection of the most important contributions by Clausius, Maxwell and Boltzmann, with introductory surveys explaining their significance. In addition, extracts from the works of Boyle, Newton, Mayer, Joule, Helmholtz, Kelvin and others show the historical context of ideas about gases, energy and irreversibility. In addition to five thematic essays connecting the classical kinetic theory with 20th century topics such as indeterminism and interatomic forces, there is an extensive international bibliography of historical commentaries on kinetic theory, thermodynamics, etc. published in the past four decades. The book will be useful to historians of science who need primary and secondary sources to be conveniently available for their own research and interpretation, along with the bibliography which makes it easier to learn what other historians have already done on this subject.

Book The Mathematical Theory of Black Holes

Download or read book The Mathematical Theory of Black Holes written by Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the reissued Oxford Classic Texts in the Physical Sciences series, this book was first published in 1983, and has swiftly become one of the great modern classics of relativity theory. It represents a personal testament to the work of the author, who spent several years writing and working-out the entire subject matter. The theory of black holes is the most simple and beautiful consequence of Einstein's relativity theory. At the time of writing there was no physical evidence for the existence of these objects, therefore all that Professor Chandrasekhar used for their construction were modern mathematical concepts of space and time. Since that time a growing body of evidence has pointed to the truth of Professor Chandrasekhar's findings, and the wisdom contained in this book has become fully evident.

Download or read book Selected Papers Volume 4 written by Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1989-11-17 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth of six volumes collecting significant papers of the distinguished astrophysicist and Nobel laureate S. Chandrasekhar. His work is notable for its breadth as well as for its brilliance; his practice has been to change his focus from time to time to pursue new areas of research. The result has been a prolific career full of discoveries and insights, some of which are only now being fully appreciated. Chandrasekhar has selected papers that trace the development of his ideas and that present aspects of his work not fully covered in the books he has periodically published to summarize his research in each area. Volume 4 has three parts. The first, on plasma physics, includes joint work with A. N. Kaufman and K. M. Watson on the stability of the pinch, as well as a paper on Chandrasekhar's own approach to the topic of adiabatic invariants. Part 2 includes work with specific scientific applications of hydrodynamic and hydromagnetic stability not covered in his monograph on the subject. The final part contains Chandrasekhar's papers on the scientific applications of the tensor-virial theorem, in which he restores to its proper place Riemann's neglected work with ellipsoidal figures.
