Book Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers

Download or read book Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers written by Niloy K. Dutta and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable look provides a comprehensive treatment of design and applications of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA). SOA is an important component for optical communication systems. It has applications as in-line amplifiers and as functional devices in evolving optical networks. The functional applications of SOAs were first studied in the early 1990''s, since then the diversity and scope of such applications have been steadily growing. This is the second edition of a book on Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers first published in 2006 by the same authors. Several chapters and sections representing new developments in the chapters of the first edition have been added. The new chapters cover quantum dot semiconductor optical amplifiers (QD-SOA), reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOA) for passive optical network applications, two-photon absorption in amplifiers, and, applications of SOA as broadband sources. They represent advances in research, technology and commercial trends in the area of semiconductor optical amplifiers.Semiconductor Optical Amplifier is self-contained and unified in presentation. It can be used as an advanced text by graduate students and by practicing engineers. It is also suitable for non-experts who wish to have an overview of optical amplifiers. The treatments in the book are detailed enough to capture the interest of the curious reader and complete enough to provide the necessary background to explore the subject further.

Book Optical Amplifiers

Download or read book Optical Amplifiers written by Galina Nemova and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An optical amplifier is a device which receives some input optical signal and generates an output optical signal with higher power without the conversion to an electrical signal during the intermediate stages. The amplification process takes place in a so-called gain medium. Most optical amplifiers are laser amplifiers. Their gain media are either insulators doped with some laser-active ions or semiconductors. The amplification process in such amplifiers is based on stimulated emission. Moreover, various types of optical non-linearities can be used for optical amplification in addition to stimulated emission. This book presents leading edge research on optical amplifiers from researchers spanning the globe.

Book Integrated Optics

    Book Details:
  • Author : H.-P. Nolting
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2013-06-05
  • ISBN : 3540394524
  • Pages : 253 pages

Download or read book Integrated Optics written by H.-P. Nolting and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of miniaturized and ruggedized optical circuits, containing a number of optical and perhaps also electronic components integrated on the same substrate, and performing useful optical functions - this is the goal of the key technologies for future systems of communication, of instrumenta tion, and of general signal processing; it is expected to combine and to complement the established technologies of microelectronics, optoelectronics, and fiber-optics. Today, after more than fifteen years of research on integrated optics, this goal appears to be almost within reach. The theoretical problems of 1ight propagation and of numerous forms of coupling and interactions in integrated-optical structures are generally well understood. A great variety of single components for integrated optics has been demonstrated experimen tally, and more recently also the successful integration of several compo nents on a common substrate. Laboratory operation of such integrated-optical 'chips' has been reported, e.g., for RF spectrum analysis, for high-speed analog/digital conversion, for a fiber-optic gyro, and for various high-per formance semiconductor laser sources. Before commercial fabrication and technical application of such devices can take place, however, their performance has to be further improved. Se rious technological and material problems are still to be overcome which are related to the small transverse dimensions and high optical power densities typical for integrated-optical waveguides. Progress can be expected here by further improvements and diversifications of micro-fabrication technologies and (perhaps more efficiently) by learning how to better adapt the optical structures to the existing technologies.

Book Linear and Nonlinear Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers for Next Generation Optical Networks

Download or read book Linear and Nonlinear Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers for Next Generation Optical Networks written by René Bonk and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are studied with a view to linear and nonlinear applications in next-generation optical networks. Quantum-dot SOAs can be optimized for linear amplification of signals with different modulation formats and multiplexing techniques. Conversely, bulk SOAs can be easily optimized for operation in the nonlinear regime. However, due to the fast carrier recovery times in QD SOAs we also look into nonlinear applications with these devices.

Book Some Advanced Functionalities of Optical Amplifiers

Download or read book Some Advanced Functionalities of Optical Amplifiers written by Sisir Garai and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the explosion of information traffic, the role of optical amplifiers becomes very significant in fulfilling the demand of faster optical signals and data processing in the field of communication. This book covers different advanced functionalities of optical amplifiers as well as their emerging applications in optical communication networks. The first chapter deals with an efficient and validated time-domain numerical modelling of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) and SOA-based circuits, while the second chapter is based on the working of gallium nitride-based semiconductor optical amplifiers. The role of SOAs for the next generation of high-data-rate optical packet-switched network is presented in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 covers the all-optical semiconductor optical amplifier based on quantum dots (QD-SOA) and its function as an arithmetic processor. In Chapter 5, the authors have presented the role of SOAs in intensity modulation of the optical pulses and their use in deterministic timing jitter and peak pulse power equalization analysis. In Chapter 6, the investigation of broadband S-band to L-band erbium-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) module is presented, and Chapter 7 includes the optimized design technique of Yb3+/Er3+-codoped phosphate microring resonator amplifiers. All selected chapters are very interesting and well organized, and I hope they will be of great value to postgraduate students, researchers, academics and anyone seeking to understand the advanced functionalities of optical amplifiers in the present scenario.
