Download or read book Computer Algebra in Scientific Computing CASC 99 written by Victor G. Ganzha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of powerful computer algebra systems has considerably ex tended the scope of problems of scientific computing which can now be solved successfully with the aid of computers. However, as the field of applications of computer algebra in scientific computing becomes broader and more complex, there is a danger of separation between theory, systems, and applications. For this reason, we felt the need to bring together the researchers who now ap ply the tools of computer algebra for the solution of problems in scientific computing, in order to foster new and closer interactions. CASC'99 is the second conference devoted to applications of computer al gebra in scientific computing. The first conference in this sequence, CASC'98, was held 20-24 April 1998 in St. Petersburg, Russia. This volume contains revised versions of the papers submitted by the par ticipants and accepted by the program committee after a thorough reviewing process. The collection of papers included in the proceedings covers various topics of computer algebra methods, algorithms and software applied to scien tific computing: symbolic-numeric analysis and solving differential equations, efficient computations with polynomials, groups, matrices and other related objects, special purpose programming environments, application to physics, mechanics, optics and to other areas. In particular, a significant group of papers deals with applications of com puter algebra methods for the solution of current problems in group theory, which mostly arise in mathematical physics.

Download or read book 2 d Quadratic Maps And 3 d Ode Systems A Rigorous Approach written by Zeraoulia Elhadj and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010-07-08 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on research on the rigorous proof of chaos and bifurcations in 2-D quadratic maps, especially the invertible case such as the Hénon map, and in 3-D ODE's, especially piecewise linear systems such as the Chua's circuit. In addition, the book covers some recent works in the field of general 2-D quadratic maps, especially their classification into equivalence classes, and finding regions for chaos, hyperchaos, and non-chaos in the space of bifurcation parameters.Following the main introduction to the rigorous tools used to prove chaos and bifurcations in the two representative systems, is the study of the invertible case of the 2-D quadratic map, where previous works are oriented toward Hénon mapping. 2-D quadratic maps are then classified into 30 maps with well-known formulas. Two proofs on the regions for chaos, hyperchaos, and non-chaos in the space of the bifurcation parameters are presented using a technique based on the second-derivative test and bounds for Lyapunov exponents. Also included is the proof of chaos in the piecewise linear Chua's system using two methods, the first of which is based on the construction of Poincaré map, and the second is based on a computer-assisted proof. Finally, a rigorous analysis is provided on the bifurcational phenomena in the piecewise linear Chua's system using both an analytical 2-D mapping and a 1-D approximated Poincaré mapping in addition to other analytical methods.

Download or read book Discrete Calculus written by Carlo Mariconda and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to combinatorics, finite calculus, formal series, recurrences, and approximations of sums. Readers will find not only coverage of the basic elements of the subjects but also deep insights into a range of less common topics rarely considered within a single book, such as counting with occupancy constraints, a clear distinction between algebraic and analytical properties of formal power series, an introduction to discrete dynamical systems with a thorough description of Sarkovskii’s theorem, symbolic calculus, and a complete description of the Euler-Maclaurin formulas and their applications. Although several books touch on one or more of these aspects, precious few cover all of them. The authors, both pure mathematicians, have attempted to develop methods that will allow the student to formulate a given problem in a precise mathematical framework. The aim is to equip readers with a sound strategy for classifying and solving problems by pursuing a mathematically rigorous yet user-friendly approach. This is particularly useful in combinatorics, a field where, all too often, exercises are solved by means of ad hoc tricks. The book contains more than 400 examples and about 300 problems, and the reader will be able to find the proof of every result. To further assist students and teachers, important matters and comments are highlighted, and parts that can be omitted, at least during a first and perhaps second reading, are identified.

For nearly 50 years Lyapunov inequalities have been an important tool in the study of differential equations. In this survey, building on an excellent 1991 historical survey by Cheng, we sketch some new developments in the theory of Lyapunov inequalities and present some recent disconjugacy results relating to second and higher order differential equations as well as Hamiltonian systems. 1. Introduction Lyapunov's inequality has proved useful in the study of spectral properties of ordinary differential equations. Typical applications include bounds for eigenvalues, stability criteria for periodic differential equations, and estimates for intervals of disconjugacy.
Download or read book Mathematics Art Technology and Cinema written by MIRELLA MANARESI and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-07-21 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about mathematics. But also about art, technology and images. And above all, about cinema, which in the past years, together with theater, has discovered mathematics and mathematicians. It was conceived as a contribution to the World Year on Mathematics. The authors argue that the discussion about the differences between the so called two cultures of science and humanism is a thing of the past. They hold that both cultures are truly linked through ideas and creativity, not only through technology. In doing so, they succeed in reaching out to non-mathematicians, and those who are not particularly fond of mathematics. An insightful book for mathematicians, film lovers, those who feel passionate about images, and those with a questioning mind.

Download or read book Hyperbolic Problems Theory Numerics Applications Proceedings Of The Fifth International Conference written by James Glimm and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-03-14 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intellectual center of this proceedings volume is the subject of conservation laws. Conservation laws are the most basic model of many continuum processes, and for this reason they govern the motion of fluids, solids, and plasma. They are basic to the understanding of more complex modeling issues, such as multiphase flow, chemically reacting flow, and non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Equations of this type also arise in novel and unexpected areas, such as the pattern recognition and image processing problem of edge enhancement and detection. The articles in this volume address the entire range of the study of conservation laws, including the fundamental mathematical theory, familiar and novel applications, and the numerical problem of finding effective computational algorithms for the solution of these problems.
