It employs a wave propagation reversal procedure that compensates for energy absorption and corrects wavelet distortion due to velocity dispersion. By compensating for amplitude attenuation, seismic data can provide true relative-amplitude information for amplitude inversion and subsequent reservoir characterization. By correcting the phase distortion, seismic data with enhanced vertical resolution can yield correct timings for lithological identification. This monograph presents the theory of inverse Q filtering and a series of algorithms, collected with the following selection criteria in mind: robustness, effectiveness and practicality. The book is written for processing geophysicists who are attempting to improve the quality of seismic data in terms of resolution and signal-to-noise ratio, as well as for reservoir geophysicists who are concerned about seismic fidelity in terms of true amplitudes, true timings and true frequencies. It will also be particularly valuable as a guide for seasoned geophysicists who are attempting to develop seismic software for various research settings. Finally, it can be used as a reference work or textbook for postgraduate students in seismic and reservoir geophysics.

Book excerpt: In this study, we have used a semi-empirical approach to computing synthetic seismograms to demonstrate full-waveform earthquake location and provide size estimates of one nuclear explosion (2006 North Korea Event). The overall approach is to use a known (reference) event to empirically characterize the propagation by comparing the reference event to a synthetic seismogram computed for appropriate. This empirical correction is then applied to a synthetic seismogram computed for a different location and/or source mechanism. Three study areas were used for locations: Central California, Nevada Test Site, and Lop Nor. Events were located to within 5 km of ground truth locations (though in semi-major axes of the error ellipses were greater than 5 km). The approach was also used to estimate the yield of the Oct. 9, 2006 North Korea Nuclear Test using a small 1.2 - 1.5 ton explosion as a reference event. The resulting yield was a chemical equivalent of 372-465 tons.

I once called it, "Advanced Seismic Inter pretation," but the geophysicists who attended the courses always wondered when I was going to start dis cussing interpretation. They discovered at the end that I never did discuss interpretation as they knew it. No men tion was made of reflection picking, posting times, map ping, contouring, and things they already knew perfectly well. Instead, I discussed Fourier transforms, sampling theory, impulse responses, distortion operators, Wiener filters, noise in f-k space, velocity spectra, wave-equation migration, and direct detection of hydrocarbons as each of these topics appeared on the seismic scene. I wanted the geophysicists to think beyond the routine ofinterpre tation, to develop a better understanding of why seismic sections look as they do, to have a better feel for what digital processing is doing, for good or evil, to the seismic data.
