Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Every Englishman His Own German Master: Or the Shortest and Easiest Introduction to a Theoretical and Practical Knowledge of the German Language I think it unnecessary to use any arguments to induce the study of the German language, and I have no apology to offer for this Introduction to it. If my performance possess any merit, those in whose hands it proves useful will owe me their thanks; and if it be destitute of merit, an apology from me cannot secure it the approbation of an enlightened public. My object in publishing it is to facilitate the acquisition of a theoretical and practical know ledge of the most original living language of Eu rope. With this object in view, I have carefully avoided introducing any thing likely to perplex or mislead beginners, and as anxiously inserted every thing which to me appeared necessary to furnish a key that will, 'in a short time, enable them to cultivate the language and literature of Germany, without any other assistance but occasional reference to a dictionary. Book The German and Flemish Masters

Download or read book The German and Flemish Masters written by Mary H. Witt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German and Flemish Masters: In the National Gallery The important and interesting collections of German and Flemish pictures in the National Gallery have scarcely received the special study which has been accorded so often to the rival schools of Italy. They have never, perhaps, been treated as a whole, nor in that intimate relation to one another which their early history demands. The literature connected with German and Flemish art is indeed extensive and increasing. Since the remarkable Exhibition held at Bruges in 1902 the early Flemish painters in particular have been subjected to the most careful and critical examination, and much that was before cloudy and vague has been defined, while many new problems have arisen. No attempt has been made in this volume to enter upon the more controversial aspects of the subject. The vexed question of attributions is after all of secondary importance to the intrinsic beauty of the pictures. The writer's object has been to trace the development of these schools through the examples in our Gallery, and to sum up in regard to them the results of the most recent criticism, acknowledging here the debt due to the indefatigable researches of writers both in this country and abroad. Book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen

Download or read book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen written by W. H. Riehl and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book Great Masters Classic Reprint

Download or read book Great Masters Classic Reprint written by John Lafarge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Masters Great artist of the past as a free agent, early possessed of all the power and development acquired by long work against outside pressure, and to think of him as imposing the form of his ideas upon an easy world. Hence, sometimes we think of Albrecht D'urer as bringing Teutonic art into Italy, while, of course, he is nothing more than a German student going to the land of greater art. We throw back into the early position of the great man the image of his full development; we make him out as conscious from the beginning of all his capacities. Instead of recognising in him the same laws that belong to other developments, we insist on his being all of one piece - as if, like Minerva, he had sprung all armed from the brain of Jupiter. In short, we forget that these men had to die long ago to obtain the authority which they hold to - day. It is possible that none of them achieved their best work, or carried out their intentions in full. Rubens and Raphael may have had some such chance, but we know that we see in Michelangelo and Rembrandt the expression of a struggle against outside necessities. To give a full account of the life of any great artist the history of each piece of work should be taken up as we take up the story of a general's campaign. I have not expressly stated these points in the brief essays. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Music Study in Germany Classic Reprint written by Amy Fay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music Study in Germany IN preparing for the public letters which were written only for home, I have hoped that some readers would find in them the charm of style which the writer's friends fancy them to possess; that others would think the description of her masters amid their pupils, and especially Liszt, worth preserving; while piano students would be grateful for the information that an analysis of the piano technique has been made, such as very greatly to diminish the difficulties of the instrument. How much of Herr Deppe's piano method is original with himself, pianists must decide. That he has at least made an invaluable re'sume' of all or most of their secrets, my sister believes no student of the instrument who fairly and conscientiously examines into the matter will deny. Book Ollendorff s New Method of Learning to Read Write and Speak the German Language Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ollendorff s New Method of Learning to Read Write and Speak the German Language Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Gottfried Ollendorff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ollendorff's New Method of Learning to Read, Write, and Speak the German Language The success of Ollendorff is unquestionably due to his method, by which he has made the German, heretofore noto riously difficult to foreigners, accessible to the capacity of all, young or old, learned or unlearned. Instead of pre-supposing a familiarity with English Grammar in the pupil, and then presenting a synthetic view of the principles of the language, as is commonly done, he begins apparently without any system, with the simplest phrases, from which he deduces the rules, until gradually and almost imperceptibly he makes the pupil master of the etymology and syntax of every part of speech. The rules are, as it were, concealed amid the multitude of exercises which are added to each lesson, and which serve to fortify the learner in the principles he has already acquired. Another characteristic feature of the book, and one in which its practical merit chiefly consists is, that the examples on which the rules are based, and those which are intended to illustrate the rules, are not derived from the German Classics; they are neither the ideal language of Poetry, nor the rigorous language of Science, but of life, - short sentences, such as one would be most likely to use in conversing in a circle of friends, or in writing a letter.
