Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of Eloquence, Vol. 19 of 25: Famous Orations of Great World Leaders From Early Greece to the Present Time The constitutional choice to the presidency of a citizen who adheres to the original principles of the fathers of the country, is the happy result of the recent national election. But by events which have since transpired in the southern States it appears that a large, influential, and energetic body of men in that section of the country, who control the action of at least the State of South Carolina, desire to resist, if necessary, by force of arms, this peaceful and constitutional triumph of republican principles, to which they ought in honor and loyalty to yield a generous acquiescence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of Eloquence, Vol. 22 of 25: Famous Orations of Great World Leaders From Early Greece to the Present Time The Honorable Thomas White was born in Montreal in 1830, where he received his education and where his early life was spent. He studied law in Ontario, but did not engage in the practice of the profession. During a number of years he was engaged in journalism in Hamilton and subsequently in Montreal, and he was one of the most brilliant writers and platform speakers of his day. He was returned to the House of Commons for Cardwell, Ontario, in 1878, and re-elected in 1882, becoming minister of the interior in 1885; and he remained in the Macdonald government until his death in the spring of 1888. His death was a great loss to Parliament and to the Conservative party of which he was a devoted member. Twenty Years of Liberal-Conservative Administration in Canada Delivered at the Village of L'original, March 5, 1874 We are here to-day for the purpose of forming a Liberal-Conservative Association. Mr. Hamilton has told you that all through Ontario a similar course is being adopted by the party. You, gentlemen, have not been alone in the absence of proper organization. Unfortunately it has been the lot of the party generally to neglect the organization of the ranks and to depend upon the great skill and statesmanship of the leader. We have been disposed to think, because our party has been in office for twenty years, it was impossible that it could be defeated, and we have trusted to that skill and statesmanship and to the fact of previous triumphs, rather than to our strong united effort to win the contest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of Eloquence, Vol. 5 of 25: Famous Orations of Great World Leaders, From Early Greece to the Present Time But, my lords, I hope we shall be so cautious as to examine the draught which these state empirics have thought proper to offer us; and I am confident that a very little examination will convince us of the pernicious qualities of their new prep aration, and show that it can have no other effect than that of poisoning the public. The law before us, my lords, seems to be the effect of that practice of which it is intended likewise to be the cause, and to be dictated by the liquor of which it so effectually promotes the use; for surely it never before was conceived, by any man entrusted with the administration of public affairs, to raise taxes by the destruction of the people. Nothing, my lords, but the destruction of all the most laborious and useful part of the nation can be expected from the license which is now proposed to be given, not only to drunkenness, but to drunkenness of the most detestable and dangerous kind; to the abuse not only of intoxicating, but of poisonous liquors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of Eloquence, Vol. 6 of 25: Famous Orations of Great World Leaders From Early Greece to the Present Time My Lords, - The gentlemen who have it in command to support the impeachment against Mr. Hastings have directed me to open the cause with a general view of the grounds upon which the Commons have proceeded in their charge against him. They have directed me to accompany this with another general view of the extent, the magnitude, the nature, the tendency, and the effect of the crimes which they allege to have been by him committed. They have also directed me to give an explanation (with their aid I may be enabled to give it) of such circumstances preceding the crimes charged on Mr. Hastings, or concomitant with them, as may tend to elucidate whatever may be found obscure in the articles as they stand. To these they wished me to add a few illustrative remarks on the laws, customs, opinions, and manners of the people concerned, and who are the objects of the crimes we charge on Mr. Hastings. The several articles, as they appear before you, will be opened by other gentlemen with more particularity, with more distinctness, and, without doubt, with infinitely more ability, when they come to apply the evidence which naturally belongs to each article of this accusation. This, my lords, is the plan which we mean to pursue on the great charge which is now to abide your judgment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of Eloquence, Vol. 1 of 25: Famous Orations of Great World Leaders From Early Greece to the Present Time HE exact period at which Homer ourished is wholly unknown, but he is generally placed somewhere in the tenth century bc. He is supposed to have been born at Smyrna, and to have belonged to an Ionian family which had removed thither from Ephesus. According to some accounts he taught school at Smyrna, and was already known as a poet when he was asked by Mentes, a sea captain, to accompany him upon his voyages. In this manner his geographical knowledge is accounted for. Wherever he went he recited his verses and was listened to With great eagerness. At Ithaca an affection of the eyes left him totally blind, and hence, say some writers, his name of Homer instead of melesignes or Mmonides, his former appellation. According to Herodotus he died at Ios and was buried on the seashore. His fame rests upon the two great epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey. His personality and the authorship of these poems have been much discussed, and, though scholars are practically agreed that certain portions of these great epics are of comparatively late origin, great diversity of opinion exists as to the ultimate analysis The following Homeric speeches are considered fine typical examples of the oratory of that time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of Eloquence, Vol. 18 of 25: Famous Orations of Great World Leaders From Early Greece to the Present Time William Henry Bellows, an eminent American pulpit orator and philanthropist, was born in 1814, and graduated at Harvard in 1832. He studied at the Harvard Divinity School, and, having been called to the Unitarian Church on Fourth Avenue, New York city, he soon became a distinct power in the religious and social life of the metropolis. He was an eloquent speaker and took an active part In alt patriotic and philanthropic enterprises, especially in the formation and conduct of the Sanitary Commission at the time of the Civil War. He published a book entitled "On the Treatment of Social Diseases." He died January 30, 1882. Oration at the Funeral of William Cullen Bryant Delivered in all Souls' Church, New York, June 14, 1878 The whole country is bending with us, their favored representatives, over the bier that holds the dust of Bryant! Private as the simple service is that consigns the ashes of our illustrious poet and journalist to the grave, there is public mourning in all hearts and homes, making these funeral rites solemn and universal by the sympathy that from every quarter flows toward them, and swells the current of grateful and reverent emotion. Much as the modest, unworldly spirit of the man we mourn shrunk from the parade of public rites, leaving to his heirs the duty of a rigid simplicity in his funeral, neither his wishes nor theirs could render his death and burial less than an event of general significance and national concern. It is not for his glory that we honor and commemorate him. Public fame, for more than half a century, has made it needless, or impossible, to add one laurel to his crown. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of Eloquence, Vol. 23 of 25: Famous Orations of Great World Leaders From Early Greece to the Present Time Pilgrim Fathers are still very thankful for the parched corn of learning. Recent discussions have added pitifully little to the world's stock of wisdom about the staple of education. Who blows today such a ringing trumpet-call to the study of language as Luther blew? Hardly a significant word has been added in two centuries to Milton's description Of the unprofitable way to study languages. Would any young American learn how to profit by travel, that foolish beginning but excellent sequel to education, he can find no apter advice than Bacon's. The practice of England and America is literally centuries behind the precept of the best thinkers upon education. A striking illustration may be found in the prevailing neglect of the systematic study Of the English language. How Iamentably true today are these words Of Locke: If any one among us have a facility or purity more than ordinary in his mother tongue, it is owing to chance, or his genius, or anything rather than to his education or any care of his teacher. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of Eloquence, Vol. 3 of 25: Famous Orations of Great World Leaders From Early Greece to the Present Time Arohias was a Greek poet, a native of Antioch, who came to Rome in the train of Lucullus, when Cicero was a child. He assumed the names of Aulus and Licinius, the last out of compliment to the Luculli, and Cicero had been for some time a pupil of his, and had retained a great regard for him. A man of the name of Gracchus now prosecuted him as a false pretender to the rights of a Roman citizen, according to the provisions of the lea; Papim'a. But Cicero contends that he is justified by that very law, for Archias before coming to Rome had stayed at Heraclea, a confederate city, and had been enrolled as a Heraclean citizen; and in the lean Papirm it was expressly provided that those who were on the register of any con. Federate city as its citizens, if they were residing in Italy at the time the law was passed, and if they made a return of themselves to the praetor within sixty days, were to be exempt from its operation. However, the greater part of this oration is occupied, not in legal arguments, but in a panegyric on Archias, who is believed to have died soon afterward; and he must have been a very old man at the time that it was spoken, as it was nearly forty years previously that he had first come to Rome.
