Book Diving Science Revisited

Download or read book Diving Science Revisited written by Michael B. Strauss and published by Best Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-01 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diving Science...Revisited is like no other diving text, including its predecessor, Diving Science. Amplified with figures, tables, and photos in color, this book includes four unique and innovative parts amplified by nine contributors. - Medical problems of diving (MPD) are discussed from stimulus-response perspectives in the phase of a dive in which they are likely to occur. - MPD are explained by how they affect the human diver whether physical, physiological, psychological, and/or lack of awareness. - A variety of diving types and situations from breath-hold to rebreather, from children to women to older aged adults, from cold water to cave, and from deep altitude to diving with handicaps are described in individual chapters with their merits, hazards, and necessary precautions for safe diving. - Part IV contains a concise summary of the MPD from seven different perspectives ranging from the significance of the problem to when to return to diving. - Part V consists of a rhetorical question for each of the first four parts with bullet points that recap the subjects covered in each chapter. This book describes the positive as well as undesirable ways divers' interact with the aquatic environment. It is especially recommended for the following: -Diving instructors and supervisors - Those involved with clinical applications of hyperbaric oxygen therapy - Those engaged in diving-associated marine biology and underwater missions - All divers, whether novice or advanced, who want to advance their knowledge about the science and medical challenges of diving.

Book Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems

Download or read book Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems written by Yossi Loya and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-22 with total page 1003 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes what is known about mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) geographically and by major taxa. MCEs are characterized by light-dependent corals and associated communities typically found at depths ranging from 30-40 m. and extending to over 150 m. in tropical and subtropical ecosystems. They are populated with organisms typically associated with shallow coral reefs, such as macroalgae, corals, sponges, and fishes, as well as specialist species unique to mesophotic depths. During the past decade, there has been an increasing scientific and management interest in MCEs expressed by the exponential increase in the number of publications studying this unique environment. Despite their close proximity to well-studied shallow reefs, and the growing evidence of their importance, our scientific knowledge of MCEs is still in its early stages. The topics covered in the book include: regional variation in MCEs; similarities and differences between mesophotic and shallow reef taxa, biotic and abiotic conditions, biodiversity, ecology, geomorphology, and geology; potential connectivity between MCEs and shallow reefs; MCE disturbances, conservation, and management challenges; and new technologies, key research questions/knowledge gaps, priorities, and future directions in MCE research.

Book Technically Speaking Talks on Technical Diving

Download or read book Technically Speaking Talks on Technical Diving written by Simon Pridmore and published by Simon Pridmore. This book was released on 2023-02-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technically Speaking – Talks on Technical Diving Volume 1: Genesis and Exodus is the latest book from best-selling Scuba series author Simon Pridmore. It is a series of themed talks telling the early history of technical diving—where it came from, how it developed, how it expanded across the world, who the important movers were and how, in the decade from 1989 to 1999, the efforts of a few determined people changed scuba diving forever. These ten years saw the greatest shake-up the sport has ever seen but technical diving’s road to universal acceptance was anything but smooth, many obstacles had to be overcome and there were times when even viewed in retrospect, it seemed that its advocates might fail in their mission. Ultimately, success came down to perseverance, people power, good timing and more than a little luck. Technical diving trailblazer Kevin Gurr comments: “Simon has completed a complex task with consummate skill and has accurately unravelled the when's, the who's and some of the why's, much of which would have been unjustifiably lost in the mists of time if not for this work. Thank you, Simon, for capturing the memory of lost and surviving friends, for detailing one of diving's most pioneering eras and for helping others and myself remember how much fun it all was!” And Oztek and Tekdive convenor David Strike writes: “Charting the growth and development of an aspect of diving that ranks as one of the most important in the entire history of underwater developments— and with comprehensive and detailed appendices—Simon Pridmore’s ‘Technically Speaking’ breaks the mould of dry-as-dust historical reference works. It sets the record straight on many of the myths and misconceptions that continue to surround the development of technical diving and does so in an engaging way.” Author Simon Pridmore has been at the sharp end of the scuba diving industry for 30 years, working as a guide, divemaster, instructor, instructor trainer and instructor trainer-trainer. In the 1990s, he pioneered mixed-gas deep diving in Asia, first with Mandarin Divers in Hong Kong and later through his own shop in Guam, Professional Sports Divers, the first dedicated technical diving centre in the Western Pacific. He also held the regional franchise for IANTD, with technical diving operations in such exotic locations as Bikini Atoll, Majuro, Palau, Kosrae and Truk Lagoon. He then moved to the United Kingdom and became the IANTD licensee there, as well as working for cutting-edge mixed-gas computer and rebreather manufacturers VR Technology. Today, he is one of scuba diving’s most prolific writers, with a five-volume Scuba series, several guides for travelling divers, a biography, a novel and even a couple of divers’ cookbooks to his name. He and his wife Sofie currently live in Taiwan. Find out more about Simon and his books at his website www.simonpridmore.com or via his Substack newsletter Scuba Conversational.

Book excerpt: The number of ships that have met their ends off Nova Scotia's rugged coast is almost limitless. Their stories and histories are at once both interesting and tragic, and in some cases, mysterious. Collected here are the accounts of just a few of these events, footnotes in the long maritime history of the province. The tragedies of the past have become the playgrounds of divers, who visit these underwater time-capsules, not for any monetary gain, but rather in the development of a deep appreciation of maritime history. It is the history of those who came before, braved unimaginable hardship, laid the foundations of Canada, and defended its freedom. There is something about touching a shipwreck that makes history much more real and powerful. Wreck Diving Tales is a compelling read for divers, maritime history lovers, and armchair adventurers alike.
