Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Arguments Work A fundamental component of good writing was well known throughout the classical world . . . but is all but forgotten today. This concise, practical guide reclaims that ancient tradition. It shows you the simple way to craft persuasive arguments in and out of the classroom. In three decades teaching writing, Professor Gregory Roper has seen that students often fall apart when they get into the meat of their argument. He struggled to help them until he discovered this neglected piece of classical rhetoric. The dry name--stasis theory--obscures how practical this ancient device is. It teaches you that there are really only four kinds of arguments. Even better, the Four Arguments follow a sequence. By laying out that sequence, Dr. Roper takes the guesswork out of organizing your writing. Mastering the Four Arguments is full of practical advice. Dr. Roper breaks down each of the Four Arguments to show you the questions to answer and the tasks to accomplish. Every chapter includes helpful exercises so you can put these techniques into practice--right away. Dr. Roper also teaches you how mastering the Four Arguments helps you in any academic course--and in the real world. You'll know how to make a persuasive case whether you're writing a term paper or presenting to your boss. You'll even become a better reader and listener. Arguments are all around us--about politics, the economy, sports, music, you name it. Once you understand the Four Arguments, you will know a good or bad argument when you see one. And you will know how to respond more thoughtfully. Unlike other writing textbooks, Mastering the Four Arguments is slim, engaging . . . and affordable. Like Dr. Roper's first book, The Writer's Workshop, it is sure to become a go-to guide for students and teachers. Homeschoolers, classical schools, high schools, and colleges will turn to Mastering the Four Arguments.

Book Active Learning in College Science

Download or read book Active Learning in College Science written by Joel J. Mintzes and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-23 with total page 989 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores evidence-based practice in college science teaching. It is grounded in disciplinary education research by practicing scientists who have chosen to take Wieman’s (2014) challenge seriously, and to investigate claims about the efficacy of alternative strategies in college science teaching. In editing this book, we have chosen to showcase outstanding cases of exemplary practice supported by solid evidence, and to include practitioners who offer models of teaching and learning that meet the high standards of the scientific disciplines. Our intention is to let these distinguished scientists speak for themselves and to offer authentic guidance to those who seek models of excellence. Our primary audience consists of the thousands of dedicated faculty and graduate students who teach undergraduate science at community and technical colleges, 4-year liberal arts institutions, comprehensive regional campuses, and flagship research universities. In keeping with Wieman’s challenge, our primary focus has been on identifying classroom practices that encourage and support meaningful learning and conceptual understanding in the natural sciences. The content is structured as follows: after an Introduction based on Constructivist Learning Theory (Section I), the practices we explore are Eliciting Ideas and Encouraging Reflection (Section II); Using Clickers to Engage Students (Section III); Supporting Peer Interaction through Small Group Activities (Section IV); Restructuring Curriculum and Instruction (Section V); Rethinking the Physical Environment (Section VI); Enhancing Understanding with Technology (Section VII), and Assessing Understanding (Section VIII). The book’s final section (IX) is devoted to Professional Issues facing college and university faculty who choose to adopt active learning in their courses. The common feature underlying all of the strategies described in this book is their emphasis on actively engaging students who seek to make sense of natural objects and events. Many of the strategies we highlight emerge from a constructivist view of learning that has gained widespread acceptance in recent years. In this view, learners make sense of the world by forging connections between new ideas and those that are part of their existing knowledge base. For most students, that knowledge base is riddled with a host of naïve notions, misconceptions and alternative conceptions they have acquired throughout their lives. To a considerable extent, the job of the teacher is to coax out these ideas; to help students understand how their ideas differ from the scientifically accepted view; to assist as students restructure and reconcile their newly acquired knowledge; and to provide opportunities for students to evaluate what they have learned and apply it in novel circumstances. Clearly, this prescription demands far more than most college and university scientists have been prepared for.

Book Learning to Write Effectively Current Trends in European Research

Download or read book Learning to Write Effectively Current Trends in European Research written by Mark Torrance and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-09-05 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed overview of current or recent research exploring a wide range of ideas, theories, and practices around written text production. European researchers from a broad range of disciplines brought together under the European Research Network on Learning to Write Effectively were instructed to contribute short papers summarising their current activity. The papers are grouped around the four main themes. The first deals with issues around the development of basic ("low-level") writing skills, mainly in the early years of education. The second section focuses directly on issues around the teaching and learning of writing. This is divided into five parts that describe: evaluations of different forms of writing instruction, research exploring the processes by which writers learn, methods of text assessment in educational contexts, research exploring the effects of various learner and teacher variables on the development of writing skill, and conceptions of and variation in educational text genres. The third section reports research exploring effective document design. The final section has a main focus on tools for exploring the writing process.

Book EBOOK Challenging e Learning in the University

Download or read book EBOOK Challenging e Learning in the University written by Robin Goodfellow and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2007-10-16 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Informed by an intimate knowledge of a social literacies perspective, this book is full of profound insights and unexpected connections. Its scholarly, clear-eyed analysis of the role of new media in higher education sets the agenda for e-learning research in the twenty-first century" Ilana Snyder, Monash University "This book offers a radical rethinking of e-learning … The authors challenge teachers, course developers, and policy makers to see e-learning environments as textual practices, rooted deeply in the social and intellectual life of academic disciplines. This approach holds great promise for moving e-learning past its focus on technology and 'the learner' toward vital engagement with fields of inquiry through texts." Professor David Russell, Iowa State University Challenging e-learning in the University takes a new approach to the growing field of e-learning in higher education. In it, the authors argue that in order to develop e-learning in the university we need to understand the texts and practices that are involved in learning and teaching using online and web-based technologies. The book develops an approach which draws together social and cultural approaches to literacies, learning and technologies, illustrating these in practice through the exploration of case studies. It is key reading for educational developers who are concerned with the promises offered, but rarely delivered, with each new iteration of learning with technologies. It will also be of interest to literacies researchers and to HE policy makers and managers who wish to understand the contexts of e-learning.
