Book Milestones Guideposts of Massachusetts and Southeastern New Hampshire

Download or read book Milestones Guideposts of Massachusetts and Southeastern New Hampshire written by Mary E. Gage and published by Powwow River Books. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across Massachusetts, roadsides are dotted with small stone markers giving the mileage to major cities. These ancient road signs called milestones aided travelers during the 1700’s and 1800’s as our road signs today do with their mileage and destination information. Although, these old milestones no longer serve a useful purpose in our modern age of highways, they continue to fascinate us. This fascination has led to the preservation by local communities of at least 129 milestones in Massachusetts and a number of milestones in New Hampshire. Milestones were for the most part commissioned by private citizens and made by local or itinerant stone carvers. With the exception of the turnpike milestones, no two milestones are alike. There are differences in the type of stone chosen, the wording, and the lettering styles of individual carvers. These differences give the milestones personality and character. This sense of character is one of the endearing aspects of these humble road signs that continues to draw us to them. Although some of the milestones like those around Boston and those along the famous Upper Post Road are well known, many are not. The authors have spent a number of years combing through old books and newspapers and traveling through the state in search of these local historical treasures. This book draws together all of their research in an effort to provide a comprehensive inventory of Massachusetts milestones. In addition, it includes milestones the authors have found in their travels through southeastern New Hampshire.

Book excerpt: Holds special interest for history, photography, and biography buffs; students and readers of American studies; anyone connected with southeast Massachusetts and Cape Cod. Readers see history through the eyes of everyday people in this ecclectic collection of journals, anecdotes, and "slice-of-life" vignettes from New England. There's the diary of a young Englishwoman who came to work in America in 1914, just as her homeland was drawn into World War I ...adventures of rum-runners during prohibition...a visit to St. Mary's Home for Children during the '40s to meet a boy with happy surprises in store. Spinner V brings to life these and other stories of the human experience and features an extraordinary photographic portrayal of people and events of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southeastern Massachusetts: Its Shores and Islands, Woodlands and Lakes, and How to Reach Them; With Information for the Sportsman and Tourist, and for All in Search of Rest and Recreation Within a few hours' ride from the metropolis are sections of country and seaboard, which, in variety of character, loveliness of climate, and grandeur of scenery, are unsurpassed by any of the celebrated and more distant watering-places on the continent. The man of business may have his summer home fifty to a hundred miles distant, amid the beauties of nature, and yet, while engaged at his daily calling, be within a few hours of the domestic circle; or may himself enjoy his days of rest and recreation with his family, and be within easy reach of his business. The old colony railroad, whose lines cover a third of the old Bay State, and embrace all the principal cities, towns, villages, and pleasure resorts of Southeastern Massachusetts, is conceded to be one of the best appointed roads in the country. Stretching its iron arms in every direction, it groups Boston, Plymouth, Taunton, New Bedford, Fall River; the famous summer resorts of Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and Cape Cod; Newport and Warren, R. I., and New York, and by its connections, Saratoga, Niagara, the White Mountains, the British Dominions, and the South and West. Passing through a country unsurpassed for its ocean views and inland beauty, and around which cluster the most interesting historic memories, it affords an avenue unrivalled for speedy and comfortable transit.
