This book was released on 2009-12-28 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated to reflect the latest discoveries in the field, the Fifth Edition of Hartl's classic text provides an accessible, student-friendly introduction to contemporary genetics. Designed for the shorter, less comprehensive introductory course, Essential Genetics: A Genomic Perspective, Fifth Edition includes carefully chosen topics that provide a solid foundation to the basic understanding of gene mutation, expression, and regulation. New and updated sections on genetic analysis, molecular genetics, probability in genetics, and pathogenicity islands ensure that students are kept up-to-date on current key topics. The text also provides students with a sense of the social and historical context in which genetics has developed. New and expanded end-of-chapter material allows for a mastery of key genetics concepts and is ideal for homework assignments and in-class discussion.

Download or read book Marine Bioinvasions Patterns Processes and Perspectives written by Judith Pederson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the global rate of marine introductions increases, exotic species exert greater economic and ecological impacts, affecting ecosystems and human health. The complexity of marine ecosystems challenges our ability to find easy solutions to prevention, management, and control of introductions. This book highlights issues of timely importance in marine bioinvasion science. Selected topics explore the potential evolutionary consequences and ecological impacts of introduced organisms, examine the feasibility of biological control, and describe patterns of introduction. These papers were presented at the Second International Conference on Marine Bioinvasions, which featured new marine invasion research from around the world. These papers should be of interest to scientists, students, and managers with an interest in marine bioinvasions and the application of knowledge to management concerns.

Download or read book Global Perspectives for Local Action written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-02-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is a rich source of information that can be used by a broad range of stakeholders to promote discussions and actions to improve K-12 mathematics and science teaching and learning. To support educators, administrators, parents, and others interested in education in using TIMSS materials, the National Research Council (NRC) has prepared a report, Global Perspectives for Local Action: Using TIMSS to Improve U.S. Mathematics and Science Education (see "Resources"). This report will help educators, administrators, parents and others interested in education to understand what can be learned from TIMSS findings, and it will encourage them to use the information to make improvements in mathematics and science education. Provided in the report are insights into mathematics and science achievement, curriculum, instruction, and school support systems, such as professional development, in the United States and around the world. To make TIMSS information more accessible and useful to educators and the public, the NRC prepared this professional development guide to accompany its report. This guide provides directions and support materials for leading workshops and planning sessions for teachers, educational administrators, higher education faculty, and the interested public.
Download or read book Education Systems in Historical Cultural and Sociological Perspectives written by Daniel Tröhler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-26 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly half a century, research on education systems has been increasingly popular. However, this popularity was long restricted primarily to internationally linked policy makers and education planners, often backed up by international organizations such the OECD but also by governmental or para-governmental organizations within the individual countries. These institutional affiliations provided education research with a specific character that often centres on notions such as excellence, efficiency, or standards. The specific comparative character of this policy-driven research agenda triggered the development of suitable research techniques such as comparative statistics and pertinent sub-disciplines such as cognitive psychology. Backed-up by powerful global institutions, this agenda purported to be rather unique, and it tended to ignore the cultural complexity of the educational field and those research approaches that address this complexity. This volume includes different historical, cultural, and sociological approaches to the education systems and to questions as to how research on education systems can be undertaken beyond the parameters of the existing research agenda. They demonstrate how pertinent problems of research on education systems can only be tackled taking an international and interdisciplinary approach with regard to both research questions and methods concerning education systems.

Download or read book Critical Perspectives on International Education written by Yvonne Hébert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In rapidly globalizing spaces of life, any research project on international education would necessarily have multi-directional emphases, with the quality of observations and analyses reflecting the expanding political, economic and cultural intersections which characterize this potentially promising century. To respond to these emerging learning and living contexts of our world, this book brings together some of the most active and established scholars in the field. As such, the book represents important epistemic interventions that analyze and critique the institutional, socio-economic, linguistic and pedagogical platforms of international education. As the locus of international education cannot be detached from the pragmatics of social development, the specific recommendations embedded in this book expand the debates and broaden the boundaries of learning projects that should enhance the lives of people, especially those who are continually marginalized by the regimes of globalization. Thus, the book actively advocates for possibilities of human well-beings via different formats of education in diverse locations of life. “Critical Perspectives on International Education offers a historically comprehensive, intellectually honest, and perspective-rich scholarly exploration of a new education-globalization dynamic. This book courageously offers up diverse voices, gathered into a robust and useful conversation regarding global education. This book adds greatly to understanding why educational marketplaces must be driven by principles and practices that empower diverse peoples, to secure sustainable knowledge benefits that contribute to personal, local, national and international well-being. This critical perspective reader will engage scholars, researchers and citizens.” Jim Paul, University of Calgary “In the current intensifications of globalization and its resulting inequalities, it is crucial to better understand the role of knowledge creation and knowledge dissemination. Should knowledge be only a commodity to be sold in the market and a tool to increase economic capital, or should it be a shared sociocultural capital aimed at improving democracy and the common good? In Critical Perspectives on International Education, Yvonne Hébert and Ali A. Abdi assemble an impressive array of contributions from all over the world that address this question from a variety of critical perspectives and case studies. I recommend this book to everyone interested in the connections between education, citizenship development and human well-being.” Daniel Schugurensky, Arizona State University

Download or read book One Country Two Systems Three Legal Orders Perspectives of Evolution written by Jorge Oliveira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-21 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “One Country, Two Systems, Three Legal Orders” – Perspectives of Evolution – : Essays on Macau’s Autonomy after the Resumption of Sovereignty by China” can be said, in a short preamble-like manner, to be a book that provides a comprehensive look at several issues regarding public law that arise from, or correlate with, the Chinese apex motto for reunification – One Country, Two Systems – and its implementation in Macau and Hong Kong. Noble and contemporary themes such as autonomy models and fundamental rights are thoroughly approached, with a multilayered analysis encompassing both Western and Chinese views, and an extensive comparative law acquis is also brought forward. Furthermore, relevant issues on international law, criminal law, and historical and comparative evolutions and interactions of different legal s- tems are laid down in this panoramic, yet comprehensive book. One cannot but underline the presence, in the many approaches and comments, of a certain aura of a modern Kantian cosmopolitanism revisitation throughout the work, especially when dealing with the cardinal principle of «One Country, Two Systems», which enabled a peaceful and integral reunification ex vi international law – the Joint Declarations – that ended an external and distant control.
