Bulletin, Amherst, Mass., For January, 1915, Vol. 7: Catalogue of the Massachusetts Agricultural College, 1914-1915; Fifty-Second Annual Report, Part II I herewith submit my annual report as president of the Massachusetts Agricultural College. First of all, I wish to convey my hearty personal thanks to you as trustees for your generous action in allowing me a year's leave of absence which ended last May. For considerably over one-half of the period my services were given to the United States and American Commissions on Agricultural Credits, traveling with the commissions in Europe and assisting in the preparation of reports. The entire year Was a fruitful one in the widening of observation, the enlarging of acquaint ance, and the opportunity for study in fields fundamental to the development of large rural policies. During my absence Prof. Edward M. Lewis served as acting president, not only. With energy and efficiency, but with great acceptability to students, faculty and, I am quite sure, to your Board of Trustees. The position of acting president is never a sinecure, but Dean Lewis met every requirement with sympathy, Skill, and thoroughgoing loyalty to the policies of the institution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of College History: An Address Delivered at the Massachusetts Agricultural College, Amherst, Oct, 2, 1907 But time fails me to recount all the great services rendered by this ancient society to the cause of agriculture, and the inspiration it has given to the cause of agricultural education. As friends of the college we desire to-day to recog nize with especial gratitude, by this somewhat extended notice, the profoundly important influence, partly active, partly indirect and incidental, exerted by it from first to last in helping to lay on sound and permanent foundations the Massachusetts system of agricultural education. 'the analogy between its exertions and the later and broader work of our United States Department of Agriculture, which has now grown to be one of the great universities of the world, can hardly have escaped your attention, as I have imperfectly sketched the achievements and influence of this beneficent organization. It was voted to Open the college for those who might wish to enter the freshman class, October 2, 1867, and it was only by the greatest effort that the buildings were completed and furniture procured, so that the term commenced on that date. The buildings that were erected when the first students appeared upon the college premises were: the south dormitory, a boarding house on the north Side of the ravine, a chemical laboratory, and the botanic museum near the present plant houses. The south dormitory was a building one hundred by fifty feet, four stories in height, and contained twenty-three rooms intended to accommodate forty-six students, together with two recitation rooms, a reading room and library, and two large rooms occupied by the state cabinet of speci mens Of the natural history and geology of Massachusetts. These had been removed to Amherst from the State House at Boston, and con tained the geological specimens collected by Dr. Hitchcock, as well as the valuable collection of birds and animals made by Secretary Flint.
