Download or read book The Music of Francis Poulenc 1899 1963 written by Carl B. Schmidt and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1995-10-19 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name of Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was first brought to prominence in the 1920s as a member of Les Six, a group of young French composers encouraged by Satie and Cocteau. His subsequent fame spread well beyond France, and he is coming to be regarded as one of this century's most significant composers. His compositions are heard constantly in concert halls the world over, and numerous recordings, including complete sets of songs and piano music, have been released. Books, articles and more than a dozen doctoral dissertations have discussed his music. Carl Schmidt's catalogue of Poulenc's works represents the first comprehensive attempt to list an oeuvre which numbers approximately 185 compositions written from his teenage years until his death at the age of 63. The Catalogue indentifies a number of unpublished works, and adds a small group of compositions to his musical canon for the first time. Each work, whether complete or unfinished, published or unpublished, is described fully. Catalogue entries list and describe all known printed editions (including reprints) and manuscript copies of each work. In addition, they provide detailed compositional histories based on numerous letters, documents, and press accounts, many of which have not been published previously. Russian interest in Poulenc's music, manifested in press runs exceeding one million copies, is also revealed for the first time.

Download or read book Weapons of Mass Instruction written by John Taylor Gatto and published by New Society Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transformation of schooling from a twelve-year jail sentence to freedom to learn. John Taylor Gatto's Weapons of Mass Instruction , now available in paperback, focuses on mechanisms of traditional education which cripple imagination, discourage critical thinking, and create a false view of learning as a byproduct of rote-memorization drills. Gatto's earlier book, Dumbing Us Down , introduced the now-famous expression of the title into the common vernacular. Weapons of Mass Instruction adds another chilling metaphor to the brief against conventional schooling. Gatto demonstrates that the harm school inflicts is rational and deliberate. The real function of pedagogy, he argues, is to render the common population manageable. To that end, young people must be conditioned to rely upon experts, to remain divided from natural alliances and to accept disconnections from their own lived experiences. They must at all costs be discouraged from developing self-reliance and independence. Escaping this trap requires a strategy Gatto calls "open source learning" which imposes no artificial divisions between learning and life. Through this alternative approach our children can avoid being indoctrinated-only then can they achieve self-knowledge, good judgment, and courage.
Download or read book Mass Violence and the Self written by Howard G. Brown and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mass Violence and the Self explores the earliest visual and textual depictions of personal suffering caused by the French Wars of Religion of 1562–98, the Fronde of 1648–52, the French Revolutionary Terror of 1793–94, and the Paris Commune of 1871. The development of novel media from pamphlets and woodblock printing to colored lithographs, illustrated newspapers, and collodion photography helped to determine cultural, emotional, and psychological responses to these four episodes of mass violence. Howard G. Brown's richly illustrated and conceptually innovative book shows how the increasingly effective communication of the suffering of others combined with interpretive bias to produce what may be understood as collective traumas. Seeing these responses as collective traumas reveals their significance in shaping new social identities that extended beyond the village or neighborhood. Moreover, acquiring a sense of shared identity, whether as Huguenots, Parisian bourgeois, French citizens, or urban proletarians, was less the cause of violent conflict than the consequence of it. Combining neuroscience, art history, and biography studies, Brown explores how collective trauma fostered a growing salience of the self as the key to personal identity. In particular, feeling empathy and compassion in response to depictions of others' emotional suffering intensified imaginative self-reflection. Protestant martyrologies, revolutionary "autodefenses," and personal diaries are examined in the light of cultural trends such as the interiorization of piety, the culture of sensibility, and the birth of urban modernism to reveal how representations of mass violence helped to shape the psychological processes of the self.
Download or read book Exploring Bach s B minor Mass written by Yo Tomita and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The B-minor Mass has always represented a fascinating challenge to musical scholarship. Composed over the course of Johann Sebastian Bach's life, it is considered by many to be the composer's greatest and most complex work. The fourteen essays assembled in this volume originate from the International Symposium 'Understanding Bach's B-minor mass' at which scholars from eighteen countries gathered to debate the latest topics in the field. In revised and updated form, they comprise a thorough and systematic study of Bach's Opus Ultimum, including a wide range of discussions relating to the Mass's historical background and contexts, structure and proportion, sources and editions, and the reception of the work in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In the light of important new developments in the study of the piece, this collection demonstrates the innovation and rigour for which Bach scholarship has become known.

Download or read book Consumer Culture and Modernity written by Don Slater and published by Polity. This book was released on 1999-02-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the issues, concepts and theories through which people have tried to understand consumer culture throughout the modern period, and puts the current state of thinking into a broader context. Thematically organized, the book shows how the central aspects of consumer culture - such as needs, choice, identity, status, alienation, objects, culture - have been debated within modern theories, from those of earlier thinkers such as Marx and Simmel to contemporary forms of post-structuralism and postmodernism. This approach introduces consumer culture as a subject which - far from being of narrow or recent interest - is intimately tied to the central issues of modern times and modern social thought. With its reviews of major theorists set within a full account of the development of the subject, this book should be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the many disciplines which now study consumer culture, including communications and cultural studies, anthropology and history.

Download or read book Mass in E Minor written by Johann Herbeck and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his accomplishments as a conductor, composer, and musical administrator, Johann Herbeck had a significant effect on musical culture in the city of Vienna that was all the more remarkable because his professional career lasted only twenty-five years. During his relatively short lifetime (183177) he held positions of leadership in the most important Viennese musical organizations of the period and became famous for his conducting. His musical talents are also demonstrated in a sizeable repertoire of his own compositions: starting with songs for voice and piano early in his career, he went on in his mature years to compose instrumental works and a large body of choral settings of secular German and sacred Latin texts. Herbecks Mass in E Minor, a significant composition in the last category, is presented in this edition.
Download or read book Mass for Five Treble Voices written by Francesco Gasparini and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-08-07 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francesco Gasparini composed his Mass for Five Treble Voices for the figlie di coro (a famous all-female ensemble) at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice. Gasparini had become the Pietàs first full-time maestro di coro in 1701, and the mass was likely written early in his tenure. It is unusual in its lack of a bass part (scored for CCCAA with organ) and its inclusion of all five parts of the mass Ordinary (by 1700 most Venetian concerted masses fit the profile of the missa brevis, consisting solely of a Kyrie and Gloria). The work offers valuable insight into the ospedale repertoire, since a great deal of Venetian sacred music from this period has been lost. Based on an autograph manuscript, this edition makes Gasparinis mass available to scholars interested in sacred music of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries and enriches the repertoire for treble and womens choruses.
Download or read book Choral Orchestral Repertoire written by Jonathan D. Green and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choral-Orchestral Repertoire: A Conductor’s Guide, Omnibus Edition offers an expansive compilation of choral-orchestral works from 1600 to the present. Synthesizing Jonathan D. Green’s earlier six volumes on this repertoire, this edition updates and adds to the over 750 oratorios, cantatas, choral symphonies, masses, secular works for large and small ensembles, and numerous settings of liturgical and biblical texts for a wide variety of vocal and instrumental combinations. Each entry includes a brief biographical sketch of the composer, approximate duration, text sources, performing forces, available editions, and locations of manuscript materials, as well as descriptive commentary, a discography, and a bibliography. Unique to this edition are practitioner’s evaluations of the performance issues presented in each score. These include the range, tessitura, and nature of each solo role and a determination of the difficulty of the choral and orchestral portions of each composition. There is also a description of the specific challenges, staffing, and rehearsal expectations related to the performance of each work. Choral-Orchestral Repertoire is an essential resource for conductors and students of conducting as they search for repertoire appropriate to their needs and the abilities of their ensembles.
