Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pastoral and Monumental, Donald C. Jackson chronicles America's longtime fascination with dams as represented on picture postcards from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. Through over four hundred images, Jackson documents the remarkable transformation of dams and their significance to the environment and culture of America. Initially, dams were portrayed in pastoral settings on postcards that might jokingly proclaim them as "a dam pretty place." But scenes of flood damage, dam collapses, and other disasters also captured people's attention. Later, images of New Deal projects, such as the Hoover Dam, Grand Coulee Dam, and Norris Dam, symbolized America's rise from the Great Depression through monumental public works and technological innovation. Jackson relates the practical applications of dams, describing their use in irrigation, navigation, flood control, hydroelectric power, milling, mining, and manufacturing. He chronicles changing construction techniques, from small timber mill dams to those more massive and more critical to a society dependent on instant access to electricity and potable water. Concurrent to the evolution of dam technology, Jackson recounts the rise of a postcard culture that was fueled by advances in printing, photography, lowered postal rates, and America's fascination with visual imagery. In 1910, almost one billion postcards were mailed through the U.S. Postal Service, and for a period of over fifty years, postcards featuring dams were "all the rage." Whether displaying the charms of an old mill, the aftermath of a devastating flood, or the construction of a colossal gravity dam, these postcards were a testament to how people perceived dams as structures of both beauty and technological power.

Book Construction of Masonry Dams Classic Reprint

Download or read book Construction of Masonry Dams Classic Reprint written by Chester W. Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Construction of Masonry Dams Many volumes have been written upon the design of masonry dams; the principal features and methods have been reduced to what may be called an accepted, standard practice. It is hoped that the present work will supply the details of construction and supervision which have not been adequately covered heretofore. For a number of years descriptions of particular dams have appeared in the engi neering periodicals, but little attention has been given in these articles to the general principles of construction involved. Within the limitations of this book it was not possible to cover the subject in all of its ramifications. Earth work, rock excavation, cement, pumping and many similar subjects have been passed over entirely either because adequate treatment was impossible in such a work as this, or because they are fully covered in other books. Other subjects, such as power, are touched upon in the most ele mentary manner and solely from the point of view of the man en gaged in dam construction. Thus the material upon source and dis tribution of power are mere suggestions, while the subjects of power required, cost of power, etc., are treated somewhat more fully. It is probably true that for one dam actually built, several are projected and more or less thoroughly examined. The inception and promotion of such projects and their examination by financiers, result in a number of engineers being called upon for estimates of cost. Such estimates must often be prepared within a limited time and for a limited expenditure. To facilitate the rapid and reasonably accu rate treatment of such estimates, a chapter has been added on this subject, and this, in fact, was one of the chief purposes of the book. It is hoped that the cost figures will prove a reliable and useful guide for estimates. Labor costs, as always, must be used with caution. Book SIR M VISVESVARAYA DISMANTLING THE MYTHS

Download or read book SIR M VISVESVARAYA DISMANTLING THE MYTHS written by N.SHANKARAPPA and published by KAVYAKALA PRAKASHANA. This book was released on with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have appeared on life of Sir M.Visvesvaraya both in Kannada ,English and other Indian languages along with hundreds of articles. All these books and articles depict the life and achievements of Sir M.V in typical hagiographical style. None of these books and articles provide different outlook. A few contemporary literati who did not have any proper idea of science and engineering and some like minded people of particular group who had social status started to propagate each and every work of Sir M.V as a great achievement. In due course of time this became a tradition. As continuation of this tradition books and articles on Sir M.V are being published one after the other. The author of this current book , who is a civil engineering consultant by profession has deviated from the trodden path and subjected Sir M.V to critical technical examination. Pride , devotion or fear , belief and blind majority does not have any place in science and technology. Objectivity is the only criterion for it. But in case of Sir M.V all these have combined and utilized to glorify him to divinity. Author argues that the achievements of an engineer shall be evaluated on technical grounds only and not on any other emotional issues. Through this author argues that Sir M.V was not a great engineer but only an ordinary engineer like many others.
