Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masculinity, Senses, Spirit brings together current work by leading scholars in the fields of gender studies, religion, history, and cultural studies to examine the complex interrelationship between gender, sexuality, and the realms of the spirit and the senses in the Atlantic world from the 18th century to the present. Ranging in scope from the bridal mysticism of 18th century German Moravians, through the education theories of the German 'Gymnasium,' the creation of the gendered 'gourmand,' the 'discovery' of homosexuality, and the hyper-masculinized homosocial groupings of the National Socialists, the essays explore the inflections of constructed masculinity in the religious, educational, culinary, political, and social institutions of Germany, France, and North America from the 18th century to the 20th centuries. The collection reveals the disparate and yet related worlds of masculine gender performance, recognizing the central role of the body and its relation to the spirit and senses in notions of European and Atlantic masculinity.

Book The Hidden Spirituality of Men

Download or read book The Hidden Spirituality of Men written by Matthew Fox and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no secret that men are in trouble today. From war to ecological collapse, most of the world’s critical problems stem from a distorted masculinity out of control. Yet our culture rewards the very dysfunctions responsible for those problems. To Matthew Fox, our crucial task is to open our minds to a deeper understanding of the healthy masculine than we receive from our media, culture, and religions. Popular religion forces the punitive imagery of fundamentalism on us, pushing most men away from their natural yearning for spirituality and toward intolerance and domination. Meanwhile, many men, particularly young men, are looking for images of healthy masculinity to emulate and finding nothing. To awaken what Fox calls “the sacred masculine,” he unearths ten metaphors, or archetypes, ranging from the Green Man, an ancient pagan symbol of our fundamental relationship with nature, to the Grandfatherly Heart to the Spiritual Warrior. He explores archetypes of sacred marriage, showing how partnership becomes the ultimate expression of healthy masculinity. By stirring our natural yearning for healthy spirituality, Fox argues, these timeless archetypes can inspire men to pursue their higher calling to reinvent the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the path to true masculinity—to an adventurous life of strength, purpose, and clarity. Didn’t we used to understand manhood? Wasn’t there a time once when it was clear and straightforward? Are we lost? Dudes, look around you: The trail we once traveled from boyhood to maturity is now so overgrown, it’s almost impossible to trace. Our vision is blurred, rendering the map that previous generations followed unreadable. Our compass needles are spinning in circles, making navigation impossible. We are stuck in dense, dangerous woods, and our communities—the wives, children, friends, and colleagues we could be influencing—are suffering as a result. It can be tempting to give up and, like so many men today, simply exist, but take heart: Now is not the time for men to abandon our quest. We can discover the path to true masculinity—to an adventurous life of strength, purpose, and clarity. In The Dude’s Guide to Manhood, pastor, author and dude Darrin Patrick charts a course back toward real manliness, mapping out a vision to help men find significance and influence in today’s broken, mixed-message culture. Revealing his own frailties and missteps, Patrick doesn’t preach at you but walks with you on a journey toward healing and wholeness. Filled with timeless wisdom, accessible insights and practical guidance, The Dude’s Guide to Manhood issues an encouraging and doable call to all men, whatever your age or stage. We need not settle for wandering aimlessly through our days, wounded, weak, and passive. Instead, we can get back on the trail, embrace our gifts while facing our imperfections, and trust the God of new beginnings to lead us into all that we are destined to become: forgiven, connected, determined, teachable, content, heroic, and so much more.

Book An Introduction to German Pietism

Download or read book An Introduction to German Pietism written by Douglas H. Shantz and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date portrait of a defining moment in the Christian story—its beginnings, worldview, and cultural significance. Winner of the Dale W. Brown Book Award of the Young Center for Anabaptists and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College An Introduction to German Pietism provides a scholarly investigation of a movement that changed the history of Protestantism. The Pietists can be credited with inspiring both Evangelicalism and modern individualism. Taking into account new discoveries in the field, Douglas H. Shantz focuses on features of Pietism that made it religiously and culturally significant. He discusses the social and religious roots of Pietism in earlier German Radicalism and situates Pietist beginnings in three cities: Frankfurt, Leipzig, and Halle. Shantz also examines the cultural worlds of the Pietists, including Pietism and gender, Pietists as readers and translators of the Bible, and Pietists as missionaries to the far reaches of the world. He not only considers Pietism's role in shaping modern western religion and culture but also reflects on the relevance of the Pietist religious paradigm of today. The first survey of German Pietism in English in forty years, An Introduction to German Pietism provides a narrative interpretation of the movement as a whole. The book's accessible tone and concise portrayal of an extensive and complex subject make it ideal for courses on early modern Christianity and German history. The book includes appendices with translations of German primary sources and discussion questions.

Book Healing the Masculine Soul

Download or read book Healing the Masculine Soul written by Gordon Dalbey and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2003-09-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his groundbreaking book fifteen years ago, Gordon Dalbey identified the fact that men's souls have been torn between strength and sensitivity. Today, the situation is even worse. The politically correct crowd cries out for men to be more sensitive, to tame their masculine nature. On the opposing side, the media bombards men with "macho" images of violence and lust. Is it any wonder men are left bewildered about who they should be? In this newly revised and updated edition of Healing the Masculine Soul, Dalbey claims that there's hope for restoration, hope for healing-because Christ has come to heal us. God is calling men out to a relationship with Himself and calling them out to authentic manhood. "Our task is not to curse our manhood, but to redeem it," he writes. Gordon Dalbey's refreshing, comprehensive picture of God's design for the masculine soul dares men to be as God created them to be-not as society demands. Dalbey tackles the tough issues, including work, sexuality, marriage, and fatherhood. Book includes Study Guide.

Download or read book Ignite Your Masculine Sexuality written by Caeden Connor and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day of life, men are under so much pressure from society to conform. If you're a man, you might be feeling the blows of the media frenzy on how men should behave. We keep reading of sexual accusations made by women. Often, they seem to be about the kind of stuff men have done since time began. Our masculinity is a trait that we were born with, and not something we bought online. FACT: Men want to have sex with women. We have hormones that effect our moods, same as women do. Our testosterone levels make us horny, and drive us to search for sexual encounters. We try our luck and take risks. Women want us to take these risks, to prove our commitment to them. My opinion is, that you should not stop behaving in a masculine way, all because of the media hype. Be proud of your masculinity, because that is what makes you attractive to women. Play the game and show any prospective partner, that your worth taking a chance with. This book will help you reassert your masculinity. I want to show you how to behave as the man that nature intended, and not the shrinking violet. There's nothing wrong with being a nice guy, and being kind and respectful. Don't be nice though, because you're trying to follow the latest fads and trends. Don't shave off all your body hair and smell sweet, because some effeminate model of a soy boy tells you that's how a man should behave. Forget that kinda nice. Keep your body hair and be proud of it; it's part of being a man. You will soon learn that being born a man, and acting like a man, are two different things. For instance, a man does NOT have a feminine side to his nature, real men never have and never will. Sure, you can be a tender and considerate lover. But, to share that side of yourself with a woman, you first need to show her that you're a real man. My book will show you how to emphasize your confidence and not hide your true identity. Don't have any shame about your sexual desires; act upon them. If a woman sets your pulse racing, and you feel that you have to have her, act on those impulses, immediately. Don't dither, deciding what your gonna say to her. Grasp that first moment or it will pass by, and someone else will be in there. I'm not saying be rude, or act like a bully to get a woman. Show her respect. At the same time make sure she senses your masculinity. It's the best-known aphrodisiac there is. This book will give you the confidence, and the skills, to be the man who makes the moves. As a man, you have the responsibility to show the world, that men and women are not equal. Men DO have the right to show off their sexual needs. Men are takers, but they are protectors too. If you feel attracted to a woman, approach her, don't be afraid. Learn to do it the right way, as I will show you in this guide. Find your courage and stand up to those pressures in society that are trying to take your masculinity away. Stand tall, and look everyone in the eye. Turn on the charm and make her want you. Do NOT be afraid of making your move. Be more afraid of not making it. Already the world of masculinity is in danger of emasculation. The day we stop finding women attractive, then there is no hope for mankind.

Book Black and White Masculinity in the American South 1800 2000

Download or read book Black and White Masculinity in the American South 1800 2000 written by Sergio Lussana and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of a range of essays written by historians and literary critics which examine the historical construction of Southern masculinities, rich and poor, white and black, in a variety of contexts, from slavery in the antebellum period, through the struggle for Civil Rights, right up to the recent South. Building on the rich historiography of gender and culture in the South undertaken in recent years, this volume aims to highlight the important role Southern conceptions of masculinity have played in the lives of Southern men, and to reflect on how masculinity has intersected with class, race and power to structure the social relationships between blacks and whites throughout the history of the South. The volume highlights the multifaceted nature of Southern masculinities, demonstrating the changing ways black and white masculinities have been both imagined and practised over the years, while also emphasizing that conceptions of black and white masculinity in the American South rarely seem to be divorced from wider questions of class, race and power.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Early Evangelicalism

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Early Evangelicalism written by Jonathan Yeager and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evangelicalism, a worldwide interdenominational movement within Protestant Christianity, is one of the most popular and diverse religious movements in the world today. Evangelicals maintain the belief that the essence of the Gospel consists of the doctrine of salvation by grace, through faith in Jesus' atonement. Evangelicals can be found on every continent and among nearly all Christian denominations. The origin of this group of people has been traced to the turn of the eighteenth century, with roots in the Puritan and Pietist movements in England and Germany. The earliest evangelicals could be found among Anglicans, Baptists, Congregationalists, Methodists, Moravians, and Presbyterians throughout North America, Britain, and Western Europe, and included some of the foremost names of the age, such as Jonathan Edwards, John Wesley, and George Whitefield. Early evangelicals were abolitionists, historians, hymn writers, missionaries, philanthropists, poets, preachers, and theologians. They participated in the major cultural and intellectual currents of the day, and founded institutions of higher education not limited to Dartmouth College, Brown University, and Princeton University. The Oxford Handbook of Early Evangelicalism provides the most authoritative and comprehensive overview of the significant figures and religious communities associated with early evangelicalism within the contextual and cultural environment of the long eighteenth century, with essays written by the world's leading experts in the field of eighteenth-century studies.

The book concludes with an afterword in which the reader is invited to consider some of the ‘tensions, problems and areas deserving further scrutiny’. Book Bodies in Early Modern Religious Dissent

Download or read book Bodies in Early Modern Religious Dissent written by Elisabeth Fischer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-31 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early modern times, religious affiliation was often communicated through bodily practices. Despite various attempts at definition, these practices remained extremely fluid and lent themselves to individual appropriation and to evasion of church and state control. Because bodily practices prompted much debate, they serve as a useful starting point for examining denominational divisions, allowing scholars to explore the actions of smaller and more radical divergent groups. The focus on bodies and conflicts over bodily practices are the starting point for the contributors to this volume who depart from established national and denominational historiographies to probe the often-ambiguous phenomena occurring at the interstices of confessional boundaries. In this way, the authors examine a variety of religious living conditions, socio-cultural groups, and spiritual networks of early modern Europe and the Americas. The cases gathered here skillfully demonstrate the diverse ways in which regional and local differences affected the interpretation of bodily signs. This book will appeal to scholars and students of early modern Europe and the Americas, as well as those interested in religious and gender history, and the history of dissent.
