Book A Man s World Political Masculinities in Literature and Culture

Download or read book A Man s World Political Masculinities in Literature and Culture written by Kathleen Starck and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political institutions and practices such as the state, parliament, citizenship and nationality, the vote, the military, and the making and implementation of laws have traditionally been treated as if they were un-gendered and guided exclusively by objective reasoning and rationality. Rationality and reason, though, have been habitually ascribed to masculinity, a fact which has often been ignored in favour of the apparent gender-inclusiveness of the realm of politics. In contrast to this view, this book explores the interdependence of the construction of masculinities, on the one hand, and the emerging, maintenance, and modification of concepts such as the state, citizenship, nationality and nationalism, democracy and militarism on the other. Illustrating the great amount of research activity in the field of political masculinities, the book offers many perspectives in its attempt to shed light on different modes of representing and constructing political masculinities across time and space. Findings from the fields of political science, history, media studies, literature, and film studies, as well as cultural studies, encourage an interdisciplinary debate of political masculinities in Europe and the United States from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masculinity is under assault and facing extinction. The relentless attacks and bombardments from secular society and culture have eroded God's plan for man and masculinity. In Endangered Masculinity, Dr. Clarence Boyd addresses the cause and effect of a fatherless generation, lack of male leadership, and the ramifications and redefining of what God created manhood and masculinity to be and look like. We find ourselves in a time in which the role God created man to emulate is fading and the king that exists in every male has been replaced with the idols of infidelity, self, and false and godless bravado. Gender confusion, sex equality, failed marriages, the erosion of the family unit, and the escalation of incarceration rates are all products of the war against God's place and purpose for man and his rightful masculinity. Dr. Boyd defines the path that masculinity has taken that has brought us to this crisis and presents a strategy for men everywhere to step into the position, right standing, and purpose every male should understand and walk in. There is a king in every man and a masculine soul in every male that needs to walk his God-ordained path and fulfill his purpose. Can you hear his roar?

Book The Myth of Manliness in Irish National Culture 1880 1922

Download or read book The Myth of Manliness in Irish National Culture 1880 1922 written by Joseph Valente and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to supply the first contextually precise account of the male gender anxieties and ambivalences haunting the culture of Irish nationalism in the period between the Act of Union and the founding of the Irish Free State. To this end, Joseph Valente focuses upon the Victorian ethos of manliness or manhood, the specific moral and political logic of which proved crucial to both the translation of British rule into British hegemony and the expression of Irish rebellion as Irish psychomachia. The influential operation of this ideological construct is traced through a wide variety of contexts, including the career of Ireland's dominant Parliamentary leader, Charles Stewart Parnell; the institutions of Irish Revivalism--cultural, educational, journalistic, and literary; the writings of both canonical authors (Yeats, Synge, Gregory, and Joyce) and subcanonical authors (James Stephens, Patrick Pearse, Lennox Robinson); and major political movements of the time, including suffragism, Sinn Fein, Na Fianna E Éireann, and the Volunteers. The construct of manliness remains very much alive today, underpinning the neo-imperialist marriage of ruthless aggression and the sanctities of duty, honor, and sacrifice. Mapping its earlier colonial and postcolonial formations can help us to understand its continuing geopolitical appeal and danger.

Book James Joyce Sexuality and Social Purity

Download or read book James Joyce Sexuality and Social Purity written by Katherine Mullin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In James Joyce, Sexuality and Social Purity, Katherine Mullin offers a richly detailed account of Joyce's lifelong battle against censorship. Through prodigious archival research, Mullin shows Joyce responding to Edwardian ideologies of social purity by accentuating the 'contentious' or 'offensive' elements in his work. Ulysses, A Portrait and Dubliners each meticulously subvert purity discourse. This important and highly original book will change the way Joyce is read and offers crucial insights into the sexual politics of Modernism.

Book excerpt: "The author of the acclaimed The Odyssey of Style in Ulysses here presents her thinking on James Joyce dating from that landmark work. Who's Afraid of James Joyce? is consistently erudite and thought provoking."--John Gordon, Connecticut College "Contains riches and will become an essential resource for new generations of Joyce critics looking to build on Lawrence's immense contributions to the field. The glittering intelligence of the individual pieces in this collection reminds us that each time Lawrence returns to Joyce's body of work, she manages not just to extract a creative reading, but to develop a fundamentally new way of approaching these immensely influential stories and novels."--Sean Latham, University of Tulsa The development of Joycean studies into a respected and very large subdiscipline of modernist studies can be traced to the work of several important scholars. Among those who did the most to document Joyce's work, Karen Lawrence can easily be considered one of that elite cadre. A retrospective of decades of work on Joyce, this collection includes published journal articles, book chapters, and selections from her best known work (all updated and revised), along with one new essay. Featuring engaging close readings of such Joyce works as Dubliners and Ulysses, it will be a welcome addition to any serious Joycean's library and will prove extremely useful to new generations of Joyce critics looking to build on Lawrence's expansive scholarship. Both readable and lively, this work may inspire a lifetime of reading, re-reading, and teaching Joyce. Karen R. Lawrence is president of Sarah Lawrence College. She has authored and edited several other books, most recently Transcultural Joyce.

Book James Joyce s A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man

This book was released on 2003-03-27 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This casebook offers a comprehensive introduction to this landmark in modern fiction. Mark Wollaeger's introduction provides an overview of the composition and early reception of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man as well as a survey of some of the recurrent issues debated by literary critics. Essays by Hugh Kenner and Patrick Parrinder offer both indispensable overviews of the entire novel-its themes, structure, and idiom-and close attention to specific interpretive cruxes. Other essays include classic responses by Wayne Booth, Fritz Senn, Michael Levenson, Hélène Cixous, and a newly revised and expanded version of Maud Ellmann's groundbreaking "Polytropic Man." The contributions, by women and men from Britain and the United States, are organized around the unifying themes of Power and Domination; Sexuality; Identity and Perception. Feminism has raised profound questions for the social sciences, for sociological theory and for the study of men. The contributors to this volume discuss how such questions can be addressed. They demonstrate the range of theoretical traditions that can be brought to bear on the study of men, and underline the importance of understanding ‘masculinities’ in the plural. In a concluding section, three different views upon the controversy surrounding ‘Men’s Studies’ are presented.

Book excerpt: In this taut and fascinating novel, the bestselling, New York Times bestselling and National Book Award-winning author of The Sacrifice, The Accursed, and Lovely, Dark, Deep examines the mysteries of memory, personality, and identity and pierces the enigmatic force that drives human lives—love. In 1965, neuroscientist Margot Sharpe meets the attractive, charismatic Elihu Hoopes—the “man without a shadow”—whose devastated memory, unable to store new experiences or to retrieve the old, will make him the most famous and most studied amnesiac in history. Over the course of the next thirty years, Margot herself becomes famous for her experiments with E. H.—and inadvertently falls in love with him, despite the ethical ambiguity of their affair, and though he remains forever elusive and mysterious to her, haunted by mysteries of the past. The Man Without a Shadow tracks the intimate, illicit relationship between Margot and Eli, as scientist and subject embark upon an exploration of the labyrinthine mysteries of the human brain. Where does “memory” reside? Where is “love”? Is it possible to love an individual who cannot love you, who cannot “remember” you from one meeting to the next? Made vivid by her exceptional eye for detail and her keen insight into the human psyche, The Man Without A Shadow is a unique story of forbidden love, a kind of secret, evolving marriage, depicted in Joyce Carol Oates’s tight, impassioned prose. It is an uncanny, ambitious, and structurally complex novel that penetrates the mind and illuminates the heart.
