Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You hold in your hands a piece of history. Mary Slessor was a Scottish missionary to Nigeria. Her work ethic and strong personality won the trust and acceptance of local African people in a time where there were but few missionaries, and even fewer women on the field. She was known for the hope of the gospel, loving the people, protecting native children and promoting women's rights. In 1876 Mary followed her call to bring the gospel to Africa. She became known for her pragmatism, strength and humor. Slessor lived a simple life in a traditional house with Efiks. Rediscover for yourself the power of the gospel to bring a people into their destiny, and call a nation into being. The DNA of the early missionaries is an important piece of the puzzle for us today as we walk in the footsteps of these pioneers. We must learn from these stories as we stride into the end of the ages -- when every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord of all the Earth!

Book excerpt: Mary Slessor (1848-1915) was a Scottish missionary to Nigeria. In 1876, she applied to the Foreign Mission Board of the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland. She was briefly trained before being sent to Calabar where she arrived in September. Mary shocked many missionaries by living with and as the locals. She learned to speak Efik fluently and became practised in the local customs and culture, thus assisting her missionary work and promotion of women's rights. While her insistence upon working by herself brought her into conflict with authorities, her close understanding of the Nigerians led the local Governor to offer her a position on the Itu court. She adopted a number of children including twins which were considered an abomination and often killed. Her determined work and strong personality allowed her to be trusted and accepted by the locals, spreading Christianity and promoting women's rights. She received the Order of St John of Jerusalem in 1913. Recurring illness made her very weak and in 1915 she died of a fever. She was buried in Nigeria after a full state funeral.

Book excerpt: Born into humble circumstances in nineteenth century Scotland, Mary Slessor's path seemed determined as she began work as a child laborer in a textile mill. Short of stature, blue-eyed, red-haired, and with a fiery personality to match, Mary was made of tough stuff. Even though she worked twelve hours per day, she faithfully attended night school, even bringing books to work, stealing glances as she could. Her homelife was full of conflict and want until her alcoholic father died, after which Mary became the primary breadwinner. These trying circumstances were the refining crucible of Mary's strong character and her deep faith in God, a faith that was modeled by her mother. Mary lived out this faith through teaching and serving the poor-especially the rough children-in the slums of Dundee, Scotland. Even from childhood her sights were set on far-off places. Mary and her family enthusiastically followed the reports of the new Presbyterian mission in Calabar, Nigeria. She said, "It was the dream of my girlhood to be a missionary to Calabar." At age twenty-eight, she was able to join the mission herself, and spent nearly four decades serving the people there. God used Mary Slessor's upbringing to prepare her for life in Africa. She endeared herself to the people by living the way they lived, and eating the food they ate. This was partly because she was used to humble circumstances, but also so that she could economize as she continued to support her family back in Scotland from her missionary's salary. Her experiences in the rough neighborhoods of Dundee gave her a boldness to deal with intense conflicts and murderous superstitions in Calabar. Impelled by the love of Christ, she championed the causes of the poor and weak, especially women and children. To combat the superstitious tradition of killing twins, she adopted many while she preached on the value of life. Today, more than one hundred years later, Mary Slessor is still celebrated in Calabar, Nigeria. Her statue stands in the center of the city, a memorial to a woman whose life was a blessing to this people. She is depicted holding infant twins.

Book Lives of Scottish Women

Download or read book Lives of Scottish Women written by William Knox and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the remarkable stories of ten women whose inspirational lives and struggles exemplify the concerns and problems that other women have faced throughout the last two centuries. Each is the subject of a chapter devoted to her particular story and the times in which she lived. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries witnessed great changes in women's position in Scotland, and yet little is known about the achievements of the Scottish women who were the main agents of these changes. In presenting the life stories of ten women, William Knox provides evidence of the huge contribution made by women to the shaping of modern Scotland. At the same time he shows how the life histories of individuals can reveal previously dark corners of historical understanding and allow a more nuanced picture of Scottish society as a whole. Subjects include Jane Welsh Carlyle, brilliantly gifted, but married to the wayward and demanding Thomas, Sophia Jex-Blake, Scotland's first female doctor, and Mary Slessor,
