He can’t look his fiancée in the eye, instead ogling the maid or walking around the house examining furniture and tapestries with the greedy smirk of an insurance investigator. To expose this fortune hunter, Gina’s uncle hires private investigator Leo Haggerty, who soon finds that greed can overwhelm any kind of love. The Edgar and Shamus Award–winning title story of this collection introduced the world to Leo Haggerty, the tortured star of six remarkable novels by Benjamin M. Schutz. “Mary, Mary, Shut the Door” is paired with a series of spellbinding tales of violence and deceit, starring sleuths from all walks of life, each marked by the gripping psychological realism that is Schutz’s trademark.

Book The Unbinding of Mary Reade

Download or read book The Unbinding of Mary Reade written by Miriam McNamara and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clever, romantic novel based on the true story of a girl who disguised herself as a boy to sail with the infamous pirates Anne Bonny and Calico Jack—and fell in love with Anne Bonny. There’s no place for a girl in Mary’s world. Not in the home of her mum, desperately drunk and poor. Not in the household of her wealthy granny, where no girl can be named an heir. And certainly not in the arms of Nat, her childhood love who never knew her for who she was. As a sailor aboard a Caribbean merchant ship, Mary’s livelihood—and her safety—depends on her ability to disguise her gender. At least, that’s what she thinks is true. But then pirates attack the ship, and in the midst of the gang of cutthroats, Mary spots something she never could have imagined: a girl pirate. The sight of a girl standing unafraid upon the deck, gun and sword in hand, changes everything. In a split-second decision, Mary turns her gun on her own captain, earning herself the chance to join the account and become a pirate alongside Calico Jack and Anne Bonny. For the first time, Mary has a shot at freedom. But imagining living as her true self is easier, it seems, than actually doing it. And when Mary finds herself falling for the captain’s mistress, she risks everything—her childhood love, her place among the crew, and even her life. Breathlessly romantic and brilliantly subversive, The Unbinding of Mary Reade is sure to sweep readers off their feet and make their hearts soar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s Ireland in the 1950s and they’re both running away, Curly from failure as a dancer in New York and Mary from the utter boredom of Ballymalloy in the West of Ireland. Mary is seduced by his flashy car, his collection of great swing music and his style on and off the dance floor. She succumbs and to atone for the inevitable shame he has caused her, he has to give her the only thing she wants – entry into the unforgiving world he thought he’d left forever. He trains her as a jazz dancer and enters her into a competition that offers her a ticket out of town. The book probes the lives of several inhabitants of Ballymalloy and reveals some funny desires, efforts and strivings. It also probes some horrifying goings on in the workhouses and the industrial schools to which were sent thousands of unwanted children by the church and the religious orders over the decades. Details of these tragic and often fatal stories are still emerging in modern Ireland. However, this story is set in a less complicated time, when America felt good about itself and was admired all over Western Europe. When American technology was supreme and when jazz and bop ruled the world. Dermod Judge is an Irish author currently living in Cape Town, South Africa. He has had a varied career in storytelling across theatre and film – from broadcasting, writing, designing, directing and filmmaking. Dermod is an international award-winning filmmaker, script editor and international lecturer on storytelling and filmmaking. Lately he has returned to the writing of novels and published Clash(ISBN9781912083879) and Two Jam Jars for the Manor (ISBN 9781912083053) with The Book Guild in 2017, both of which were set in Ireland with Irish themes.

Book Mary Wollstonecraft

Download or read book Mary Wollstonecraft written by Miriam Brody and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-12-07 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) was the first champion of women's rights in the modern Western world. Wollstonecraft's experience teaching young women in London led her to write her first book, in which she argued for equal education for girls and boys. The moderate success of her autobiographical novel Mary, A Fiction convinced her to start writing full-time. Under the tutelage of her publisher and mentor Joseph Johnson, she joined a circle of liberal intellectuals which included poet and artist William Blake, chemist Joseph Priestley, and political thinker William Godwin. In 1790 Wollstonecraft penned A Vindication of the Rights of Men, an impassioned reply to conservative criticism of the French Revolution and a call for social equality. She developed her ideas further in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, which extended the notion of natural rights to include women's rights as well. Going so far as to suggest that women should be allowed to vote, Wollstonecraft's revolutionary ideas garnered her overnight fame--and notoriety. She traveled to Paris, lived through the Reign of Terror, fell in love with an American, and gave birth to her first daughter. Though the love affair ended tragically, resulting in her thwarted suicide attempt, she happily wed William Godwin in 1797. That year she gave birth to her second child (the future author of Frankenstein Mary Shelley). She died a few days later from complications of childbirth.Wollstonecraft's writing inspired leaders of the American woman suffrage movement, such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and moved one admirer to call her a "pioneer of modern womanhood."
