Both tell us of the beauty of creation; they seek answers to whys, hows, and shoulds. They are calls for justice and tears of pain, songs of love. They are records of daily life. This collection of poems contains prayers, questions, and some answers. They record part of a journey. Faith is a journey that lasts a lifetime. It is ever growing, deepening, and widening. May all who read these poems find a safe place for questions, answers, and hope. ~

Download or read book Mary written by Anthony J. Kelly and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2023-03-01 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The place of Mary in Christian theology has been a contested one, ever since the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century and also the advent of feminist theology in the twentieth century. Protestantism challenged much of the Mediaeval piety surrounding Mary in the West, along with her intercessory role and that of the saints more generally. Feminist thinking has questioned the portrayal of Mary as the demure and passive virgin-mother, a portrayal that places her beyond the ken of ordinary women. In all this turmoil of questioning and dispute, including effects on the ecumenical front to find common ground in the figure of Mary (ARCIC), Anthony Kelly has produced a very fine and moving series of reflections on the person and theological significance of Mary. Writing from a Roman Catholic perspective, Fr Kelly points to Mary's role in elucidating the core doctrines of the faith: the Trinity, the church, the sacraments (particularly the Eucharist), and eschatology. He sees Mary's role in the life of the church, from beginning to end, as pervasive. Her presence weaves through every point in the church's existence, in its origins, its ongoing ministry and mission, and its final goal.

Book excerpt: The title of this collection of essays is Thinking Faith: Moods, Methods, and Mystery, and it might need a word of explanation. The aim is to suggest something of what is involved in thinking faith, while indicating examples of my modest contribution over all these years. Given the exuberant data of faith, beliefs, doctrines and tradition, the task of the theologian is always to reflect on what is so richly given, and to communicate in the most telling fashion its meaning. There are certainly moods that colour the way we think, even though theological writing must show an intellectual concentration of some kind. That is quite compatible with a great variety of approaches, sometimes more hopeful, sometimes more sober, defensive and argumentative. There is also the question of methods. The strange thing about a particular theological method or style of thought is that it is seldom an explicit series of procedures. It is something more spontaneous and formed through the practices of many years. Quite clearly, in this collection of writings a number of methods is implied. Whatever the mood, whatever the method, the mystery remains-of God, Christ, and who we are in that light. To this degree, theology is a way of thinking within mystery, not outside it. In this respect, doing theology is humbling for us theologians when confronted with the limited span of our knowledge-and our poor capacities to express it. There always remain infinite expanses of what is not yet given us to see, so to leave theologians, inarticulate, in splendid defeat. And yet so much has been given, even in the most routine life of the Church, in its Scriptures its sacraments, and in the luminous witness of the many who have gone before us, and live now in the light.

Book Stumbling into Grace

  • Author : Mary Pezzulo
  • Publisher : Ave Maria Press
  • Release : 2021-06-04
  • ISBN : 1646800648
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Stumbling into Grace written by Mary Pezzulo and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2021-06-04 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a second-place award in the Catholic social teaching category from the Catholic Media Association. Mary Pezzulo intended to learn all about God through graduate studies in philosophy and Christian ethics, but serious illness ruined those plans and landed her young family in desperate straits. Despite chronic illness, deep poverty, blatant discrimination, and the cruelty she encountered, Pezzulo began tripping over God in the tiny works of mercy she offered to others and received herself. With striking candor and gritty faith she shows us how we also can meet God in the smallest acts of love. When Pezzulo began her blog Steel Magnificat in 2016, she never imagined she would be writing so much about poverty, discrimination, abuse, or the loneliness of chronic illness. Nor did she realize that the corporal and spiritual works of mercy would bring stark clarity and unflinching hope to her life. She had moved to Steubenville, Ohio, to study philosophy and ethics so that she could teach people about Jesus and make the world a better place. She expected to find God in beautiful churches, inspiring books, and the spoken words of brilliant scholars. But when her life and professional ambitions crumbled around her, she entered a terrible darkness and floundered in desperate poverty, illness, and the lingering trauma of abuse. In that dark time, Pezzulo began to know mercy, finding God in countless tiny acts. In Stumbling into Grace she shows how the works of mercy have become her anchor in turbulence and calm, piercing sorrow and ridiculous joy, overcoming despair and bringing enduring hope. Now she shares with you how to live the works of mercy in your own life. When Feeding the Hungry, keep in mind that the more needy the person you’re feeding is the more care you should take—these are the people who are most in need of hope and visible acts of love. Instructing the Ignorant begins with helping people and forming good relationships because people are worth it. Giving Drink to the Thirsty can mean advocacy and charitable giving that support access to clean water for those throughout the world just as much as it means offering drinks to anyone who enters your home. Counseling the Doubtful starts with acknowledging that faith is bigger than all of us and that it’s not wrong to have questions, doubts, or to look at another faith to see if its beliefs and practices are closer to your spiritual longings. Clothing the Naked means restoring a sense of dignity to every part of a person by providing appropriate, comfortable, and good-looking clothing, and by protecting people from gossip and prejudice.

Book The Caroline Divines and the Church of Rome

Download or read book The Caroline Divines and the Church of Rome written by Mark Langham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-04 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early seventeenth century, as the vehement aggression of the early Reformation faded, the Church of England was able to draw upon scholars of remarkable ability to present a more thoughtful defence of its position. The Caroline Divines, who flourished under King Charles I, drew upon vast erudition and literary skill, to refute the claims of the Church of Rome and affirm the purity of the English religious settlement. This book examines their writings in the context of modern ecumenical dialogue, notably that of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) to ask whether their arguments are still valid, and indeed whether they can contribute to contemporary ecumenical progress. Drawing upon an under-used resource within Anglicanism’s own theological history, this volume shows how the restatement by the Caroline Divines of the catholic identity of the Church prefigured the work of ARCIC, and provides Anglicans with a vocabulary drawn from within their own tradition that avoids some of the polemical and disputed formulations of the Roman Catholic tradition.

Book Studying Mary

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nicholas Sagovsky
  • Publisher : T&T Clark
  • Release : 2008-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780567032317
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Studying Mary written by Nicholas Sagovsky and published by T&T Clark. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteen studies in this volume were originally prepared as working papers for the internal use of the Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) in its study of Mary. According to its mandate, ARCIC seeks agreement on issues that are potentially or actually church-dividing by engaging in a serious dialogue founded on the Gospels and the ancient common traditions. In this dialogue, the members of the Commission make extensive use of historical, theological, liturgical and devotional literature that is published and accessible to all. In studying Mary, ARCIC's work was also greatly assisted by internal documents prepared by its members. Until now this material has not been published and was therefore difficult to find. Those who have read the ARCIC Agreed Statement, 'Mary: Grace and Hope in Christ', published by Continuum in 2005, will welcome the opportunity to explore this present collection of related papers. The Agreed Statement on Mary is concise, containing only eighty paragraphs. This required the omission of some historical, discursive and illustrative material that could have been included in a longer document. The papers in this volume will make up for some of the omissions. 'Studying Mary' is therefore designed to assist the study of ARCIC's work on Mary, ecumenically wherever possible, by seminaries, universities, parishes and dioceses around the world. The Seattle Statement urges a 're-reception' of doctrine about Mary by both Roman Catholics and Anglicans. This will be one more step towards 'the restoration of complete communion of faith and sacramental life' which Pope Paul VI and the Archbishop of Canterbury (Michael Ramsay) declared to be ARCIC's goal in 1966. The journey to this goal has been long. The papers presented in 'Studying Mary' formed an important part of ARCIC's food for that journey.

Book Vatican Ii on Mary the Case for the Definition of the Spiritual Motherhood of Mary

Download or read book Vatican Ii on Mary the Case for the Definition of the Spiritual Motherhood of Mary written by Douglas Nnamdi Egbuonu and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to show that the formal definition of the spiritual Motherhood of Mary would constitute a doctrinal development from Vatican IIs teaching on Mary. It is my strong view that Marys spiritual motherhood should be explicitly acknowledged, accepted and stamped with the extra-ordinary infallibility of the Church magisterium so that it would become a dogma of the Church, as the sensus fidelium. Such formal definition would give the doctrine the seal of juridical authenticity and prevent it from denigration and rejection in future. This study argues that the Catholic Church needs to advance forwards from the Marian teaching of Vatican II by making concerted efforts to maintain the Marian trajectory in the Church. Also portrayed are the efforts of the papal magisterium and some noted Catholic theologians that have gone back to the sources of the early Fathers of the Church in order to teach that Marys spiritual Motherhood has solid foundation on Scripture and the Churchs tradition. The post-conciliar teachings of the above-stated papal magisterium and contemporary theologians have the aim to nurture and sustain the faith and understanding of the people of God about Marys spiritual Motherhood. The study also examines evidence to show that there is much in the Catholic Marian theology that could improve understanding among Christians of different denominations. In particular, it portrays the fact that Mariology always points to Christ, being indissolubly linked with Christology, and also has intrinsic unity with ecclesiology.

Book Mysteries of Mary

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rev. Fr. Marie-Dominique Philippe
  • Publisher : TAN Books
  • Release : 2011-04-01
  • ISBN : 1935302779
  • Pages : 408 pages

Download or read book Mysteries of Mary written by Rev. Fr. Marie-Dominique Philippe and published by TAN Books. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mysteries of Mary shows how the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary is perfectly and intimately identified with that of her Son. It is both a reflection on the most profound moments in Mary's earthly life, from the Immaculate Conception to Cana to Pentecost, and a systematic approach to the doctrine of Mary's spiritual maternity. Mary is the mother of all the faithful because she educates us as a mother, showing us through her example, her life, how we must live the mysteries of faith, hope, and the growth of charity. The early mysteries of Mary's life show us unswerving faith as Mary's soul and flesh are prepared to receive Jesus in the Nativity of the Lord. Through trial, charity is rooted and grows in Mary's heart, until finally that heart is pierced in the mysteries of sorrow. At last, the hope for the resurrected Lord blossoms in glory. Having endured with her Son the agonies of Calvary, Mary most immediately and fully experiences His return to life indeed, from the first beat of His glorious heart. The mysteries of Mary's life are signs that truly point us to the saving grace of Jesus. Highly recommended to anyone who wishes to imitate Mary through growth in the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity.
