Book Reflections on Radical Catholic Reactionaries

Download or read book Reflections on Radical Catholic Reactionaries written by Dave Armstrong and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-08-17 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have sought to analyze (minus proper names, a la Trent) the premises, presuppositions, logical and ecclesiological bottom lines and (in a word), the spirit of a false and divisive radical Catholic reactionary strain of thought held by a distinctive and tiny sub-group of Catholics. The term traditionalism has been co-opted by groups and schools of thought within Catholicism that vary quite widely. It's similar to the love and adoption of the word Christian by many sects that are not Christian at all (since they deny the Holy Trinity or the divinity of Jesus Christ). Apologists and other observers need to differentiate groups that are using the same name, for purposes of identification and critique, and to prevent misunderstandings as to exactly what we are contending against as error. The book doesn't oppose the Tridentine Mass, or traditional liturgical practice and devotion (nor traditional morality and catechesis), but rather, far more radical ideas held by some Catholics.

Book The Essence of Photography 2nd Edition

Download or read book The Essence of Photography 2nd Edition written by Bruce Barnbaum and published by Rocky Nook, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-12-11 with total page 968 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt:

In this fully revised and greatly expanded second edition of The Essence of Photography, world-renowned photographer and teacher Bruce Barnbaum draws upon 50 years of experience and observation to teach the art of photographic seeing and creativity.

There is a lot more to photography than simply picking up a camera, pointing it toward something, and tripping the shutter. Achieving a great photograph requires thought and preparation, an understanding of the photographic process, and a firm grasp of how light and composition affect a photo. There must be personal involvement and personal expression. There must be experimentation, with the recognition that only a small percentage of experiments end successfully.

In this revised and expanded second edition of The Essence of Photography, best-selling author and world-renowned photographer and teacher Bruce Barnbaum explores these seldom-discussed issues by drawing upon his personal experiences and observations from 50 years of photographing and teaching. In addition to photographs, Bruce also uses painting, music, and writing, as well as the sciences and even business, to provide pertinent examples of creative thinking. These examples serve as stepping stones that will lead you to your own heightened ability to see and be creative.

Creativity is a topic that is almost wholly ignored in formal education because most instructors think that it cannot be taught or learned. To the contrary, Bruce has proven that photographic seeing and creativity can be taught, learned, and improved. This book expands on the ideas that are central to Bruce’s method of teaching photography, which he has used in workshops for the past 50 years.

Included in the book are in-depth discussions on the following topics:

    • Defining your own unique rhythm and approach as a photographer
    • How to translate the scene in front of you to the final photograph
    • The differences and similarities between how an amateur and a professional approach photography
    • The differences between realism and abstraction, and the possibilities and limitations of each
    • Learning to expand your own seeing and creativity through classes, workshops, and associating with other photographers
    • Why the rules of composition should be ignored
    • How to follow your passion
    • When to listen to the critics and when to ignore them

The book is richly illustrated with well over 100 photographs taken by Bruce as well as other photographers.

Seeing and creativity are difficult to teach, but not impossible. This very different, perhaps groundbreaking book is sure to inspire photographers of all skill levels—from beginners to seasoned professionals—to think deeply about the issues involved in creating successful photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 49 B.C., a bloody civil war between the forces loyal to Pompey and Julius Caesar has engulfed the Roman world and no one is allowed to be neutral. With Rome itself in turmoil, Gordianus the Finder receives an anonymous message informing him of the death of his son Meto, who lately has been acting as a double agent for Caesar. In search of the truth about Meto's fate, Gordianus journeys to the beseiged seaport of Massilia (modern-day Marseilles) which has sided with Pompey and is now stubbornly holding out against Caesar's troups camped just outside it's gates and harbor. Using his wits, Gordianus discovers a way past the seige troops and into Massilia. But once there he finds himself in a city where famine and slaughter threaten the populace, and intrigue and recriminations has taken over a city that cannot hope to stand out much longer against the troops outside it's walls. His only friend is Hieronymus, the doomed scapegoat chosen by the priests of Artemis to bear the sins of the population and save them from annihilation. When Gordianus witnesses the fall of a young woman from a precipice called Sacrifice Rock, he becomes entangled in finding out what exactly happened - did she fall or was she pushed? -- and where, in all of this, is the truth about his missing son.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a very unique calendar featuring a quote each day from one of the Carmelite Saints or Blesseds, followed by a personal reflection on that quote. The nuns at that time wished to honor two significant dates; the first being the two hundredth anniversary of the arrival of four Carmelite Nuns who bravely set forth by ship from Belgium to found the first Carmel in America, in Port Tobacco, Maryland. The second date they were honoring was the 400th Anniversary of the holy death of St. John of the Cross in 1591, who accompanied and greatly helped St. Teresa of Avila in her foundations. These reflections are the fruit of prayer, spiritual reading and Lectio Divina of these Nuns, and are a wonderful way to become acquainted with the vitality and freshness of Carmelite spirituality. The Authors: the authors were the Nuns themselves of the Carmels that were members of the St. Teresa Association in 1990. At that time there were twelve Carmels, and each Carmel assumed responsibility for one month. Then the Nuns of that particular monastery would write up a quote from one of their Carmelite saints, and added their own personal reflection or meditation on that quote. So each day is entirely unique filled with the spirit and wisdom coming from those whose entire lives are suffused with the love of Carmelite spirituality.
