Book Martyrdom and the Politics of Religion

Download or read book Martyrdom and the Politics of Religion written by Anna L. Peterson and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martyrdom and the Politics of Religion explores the ways that Salvadoran Catholics sought to make sense of political violence in their country in the 1970s and 1980s by constructing a theological ethics that could both explain repression in religious terms and propose specific responses to violence. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, the book highlights the ways that progressive Catholicism offered a justification and tools for political resistance in the face of extraordinary destruction. Using the case of Catholicism in El Salvador, the book explores the nature of religious responses to social crisis and the ways that ordinary believers construct and strive to live by ethical systems. By highlighting the importance of theological belief, of narrative, and of religious rationality in political mobilization, it touches questions of general interest to readers concerned with the social role of religion and ethics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Maximilian Kolbe was born in 1894 in southern Poland and declared a saint on October 10 1982, by Pope John Paul II (for whom he is a spiritual hero). A Man for Others chronicles Kolbe's remarkable life, which climaxed in 1941 in Auschwitz, where he volunteered to die in place of a fellow prisoner he hardly knew. Told chiefly in the words of his family, friends, acquanitances, and death-camp survivors -- including the man he died for -- A Man for Others is the story of an innovative, down-to-earth, and immensely likable man whose martyr's death concluded a life devoted to his ideal of "love without limits." Maximilian Kolbe is a real hero for our times and an inspiration for any reader." --

Book To Raise the Fallen

Download or read book To Raise the Fallen written by Patrick Kenny and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish military chaplain Fr. Willie Doyle, S.J., died in action during the Battle of Passchendaele on August 16, 1917, having been hit by a German shell while rushing to the aid of wounded soldiers trapped in No Man's Land. In To Raise the Fallen, Patrick Kenny introduces readers to this remarkable man, whose faith, heroic courage and generosity in the trenches of World War I continue to inspire Christians and non-Christians alike. To Raise the Fallen includes a selection of Willie Doyle's rich and vivid letters from the front, along with diary entries, prayers, spiritual writings and extracts from the pamphlets that made him a publishing sensation across Europe in the early years of the twentieth century. Fr. Doyle's compassion, cheerfulness and humility, alongside his great valor in wartime, are a testament to his commitment to Christ. His final act of bravery epitomizes Christ's words that there "is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends". Those who knew Fr. Doyle testified to his heroic virtue. They witnessed his fearlessness in the face of enemy fire as he rescued the wounded, anointed the dying and buried the dead. His letters home reveal both his deep faith and his great humor, even in the face of unspeakable horrors. His daily conquest of himself in little things over many years prepared him for his selfless service on the battlefield.
