There is as loud a clamour raised in exaltation of the Church as is spread to extol fathers and councils; whilst the minds of men know not what their true character is, and our ears are stunned with the empty sound of words. But let the Romanists explain to us what the Church is--which is the Church --and where the Church is. Their great object has been to represent themselves as the Church in the persons of their pontiff, cardinals, bishops, and priests. We must set aside, then, the various treatises and definitions of the word Church, and take our stand upon the creed which declares--" I believe one holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints." The creed clearly declares what the Church is--namely, the Communion of Saints; and the word Ecclesia signifies a congregation of persons--Jews, Gentiles, or Christians, Now, there are many communities in the world; but Christians are a peculiar people, and do not import any mere assembly: Ecclesia--they are Santta CathoKca, Christiana Ecclesia--a holy, Catholic, Christian Church, daily sanctified by the Divine Spirit, not merely through the forgiveness of sins, (as the Antinomians foolishly vaunt); but by the destruction, purification, and mortification of iniquity; and such persons as compose the whole Christian body, in the Old Testament, were called "The people of God." But whilst we use this unintelligible word Church, the lower orders of men of every rank fix at once on the edifice constructed with large stones, as you see it represented in paintings and # described in print. Let us dismiss this idea of the Church, with painted apostles, disciples, and the mother of Christ--let us discard pictures of the day of Pentecost, and of the Holy Spirit hovering over their heads....

The 500th anniversary of the 95 Theses offered an opportunity to reassess the meaning of that event. The relation of the Catholic Church to the Reformation that Luther set in motion is complex. The Reformation had roots in the late-medieval Catholic tradition and the Catholic reaction to the Reformation altered Catholicism in complex ways, both positive and negative. The theology and practice of the Orthodox church also entered into the discussions. A conference entitled “Luther and the Shaping of the Catholic Tradition,” held at The Catholic University of America, with thirteen Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant speakers from Germany, Finland, France, the Vatican, and the United States addressed these issues and shed new light on the historical, theological, cultural relationship between Luther and the Catholic tradition. It contributes to deepening and extending the recent ecumenical tradition of Luther-Catholic studies.

In October, he published The Church Held Captive, and by December the deepest theological rationale appeared in The Freedom of a Christian. With these three books, the relatively unknown Friar Martin exploded onto the Western European literary and religious scene. These three works have been universally acknowledged as classics of the Reformation, and of the Western religious tradition in general. Though Reformation scholars have been reluctant to single out one as the most important of the three, Denis Janz proposes a bold case for The Church Held Captive. In the first entirely new translation in more than a century, Janz presents Luther's text as it hasn't been read in English before. Previous translations stifle the original text by dulling the sharpest edges of its argumentation and tame Luther by substituting euphemisms for his vulgarities. In Janz's dual language edition we see the provocative, offensive, and extreme restored. In his wide-ranging introduction, Janz offers much-needed context to clarify the role of The Church Held Captive in Luther's life and the life of the Reformation.
