It is derived from the Latin "post illa verba textus" (after these words) referring to Biblical readings. Luther's postil was published in two series: the Church Postil and the House Postil. His published sermons and catechisms were by far his most popular. They did more to teach people the Reformation than any other book. Luther intended his postils to serve common pastors and people, and therefore was one of the greatest educational and devotional books of the Reformation. From the time Martin Luther published the first part in 1521, every annual cycle of sermons on the lessons, whether consisting of homilies or formal sermons, is termed a postil. This unabridged edition of Luther's writings of the works of Martin Luther is an accurate and clear translation. We have Presents the Church Postil as the mature Luther wanted it to be. It includes Luther’s extensive revisions to his own work. For those who are not familiar with the Church calendar year we have elected to number and title each sermon accompanied with a short description of the contents accompanied by the Bible verse. He bade his followers look up for that sign of God in the heavens which announced their invincibility, pretending to discover it either in a rainbow or a halo round the sun which was visible at the critical moment when the princes advanced to the attack. The peasants were protected by an entrenchment constructed of waggons and other impedimenta, a form of camp as old as the days of Tacitus and Hermann. The artillery of the princes tore a path through this obstacle, and the cavalry charged in upon the main body of the peasants. As they advanced, the peasants attempted to raise the hymn, "Come, Holy Spirit!" But their loose array was broken in a moment, and the battle soon became a massacre. More than half the number of the rebels were slain. Miinzer escaped from the field. His mania was cured, but the foxy cunning which was in the nature of the man survived. He crept into a house, got into bed, and feigned sickness. But he was taken, and most justly condemned to death. The delirium that had possessed him for years subsided, and the religion of his boyhood returned. He took the Sacrament in one kind, and died a Roman Catholic. There are things on which all comment is drowned in tears. Who can express the pathos of that hymn of the peasants, "Come, Holy Spirit!" as the horsemen dashed in upon them? That Miinzer made a poor end must not be held conclusive as impeaching his sincerity. He had a narrow brain to begin with; the agitation of the time intoxicated him; and when the visions of his frenzy vanished he awoke to the consciousness that he had been acting the madman. This volume brings together two important contemporary accounts of the life of Martin Luther in a confrontation that had been postponed for more than four hundred and fifty years. The first of these is written after Luther’s death, when it was rumoured that demons had seized the Reformer on his deathbed and dragged him off to Hell. In response to these rumours, Luther’s friend and colleague, Philip Melanchthon wrote and published a brief encomium of the Reformer in 1548. A completely new translation of this text appears in this book. It was in response to Melanchthon’s work that Johannes Cochlaeus completed and published his own monumental life of Luther in 1549, which is translated and made available in English for the first time in this volume. Such is the detail and importance of Cochlaeus’s life of Luther that for an eyewitness account of the Reformation – and the beginnings of the Catholic Counter-Reformation – there is simply no other historical document to compare.
