Download or read book Against the Tides written by Ronald Rudin and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For four centuries, dykes held back the largest tides in the world, in the Bay of Fundy region of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. These dykes turned salt marsh into arable land and made farming possible, but by the 1940s they had fallen into disrepair. Against the Tides is the never-before-told story of the Maritime Marshland Rehabilitation Administration (MMRA), a federal agency created in 1948 to reshape the landscape. Although agency engineers often borrowed from long-standing dykeland practices, they were so convinced of their own expertise that they sometimes disregarded local conditions, marginalizing farmers in the process. The engineers’ hubris resulted in tidal dams that compromised some of the region’s rivers, leaving behind environmental damage. This book is a vivid, richly detailed account of a distinctive landscape and its occupants, revealing the push–pull of local and expert knowledge and the role of the state in the postwar era.
Download or read book Wetlands written by Jayanthi Murali and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-01-30 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands are among the most productive life-supporting systems of the world with immense socio-economic, ecological and bio-aesthetic importance. They are also one of the most threatened habitats in the world, facing degradation due to ill-planned urbanization, industrialization and encroachments. A wetland ecosystem provides innumerable tangible and intangible benefits to society, the value of which, due to being difficult to quantify and document, is often not disseminated to policymakers and the general public. Hence, economists have developed non-market approaches to address these difficult issues related to the valuation of the environment. This is to counter planning and development decisions made purely on economic grounds, on the basis of the forces at play in the free-market system. This book details the ecological importance, environmental degradation, threats, changes in land use and related key issues of Pallikaranai Marsh. It also provides an economic evaluation of the Marsh to guide policymakers and planners in decision-making processes at both the macro- and micro-level. Students, researchers and policymakers will benefit from this book in conducting wetland research, framing suitable management practices and valuating wetlands.
Download or read book Wetlands of Bottomland Hardwood Forests written by J.R. Clark and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings comprise two parts. Part I contains eight contributed papers on hydrology, fauna, soils, forests, agriculture and ecology. Part II comprises reports resulting from the five interdisciplinary workgroups whose participants included ecologists, botanists, zoologists, engineers, hydrologists, agrologists, dendrologists, resource managers and other specialists. Their aim was to evaluate conservation and management practices for wetland portions of the bottomland forests of the southeastern United States and to provide technical advice to responsible federal agencies. Thus the book is a state-of-knowledge review of scientific literature and current research, particularly that necessary to understand the effects of alterations such as forest clearing, land drainage or levee building that impair natural functions, i.e. production of timber, maintenance of water quality, flood water storage, support of migrating waterfowl and fish, carbon dioxide balance of the atmosphere etc.
