Book excerpt: "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell" is a collection of sketches touching on the subject of Good versus Evil and examining the biblical idea of "Hell" the place of eternal suffering for those who reject God. Author and poet William Blake seems to repudiate the idea of such a place and seeks to show that in fact Hell is a place of freedom for as he puts it, "The ancient tradition that the world will be consumed in fire at the end of six thousand years is true, as I have heard from Hell. For the cherub with his flaming sword is hereby commanded to leave his guard at [the] tree of life, and when he does, the whole creation will be consumed and appear infinite and holy, whereas it now appears finite and corrupt. This will come to pass by an improvement of sensual enjoyment."

Book THE MARRIAGE OF HEAVEN AND HELL Illustrated Edition

Download or read book THE MARRIAGE OF HEAVEN AND HELL Illustrated Edition written by William Blake and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ebook is a series of texts, which were written in imitation of biblical books of prophecy, but expressing the poets own personal romantic and revolutionary beliefs. It is not exactly known when the work was written. One assumes it was composed in London between 1790 and 1793 , a period of political conflict arising immediately after the French Revolution. The book is about the first person narrators visit to Hell, a concept taken by Blake from Dantes Inferno and Miltons Paradise Lost. Apart from the opening Argument and the Song of Liberty, the entire book is written in prose. The Marriage of Heaven and Hell was influenced by the mysticism of Swedish theosophist Emanuel Swedenborg and is also in part a satire on Emanuel Swedenborgs writings, especially on Heaven and Hell from which Blake adapted the title. William Blake (1757 – 1827) was a British poet, painter, visionary mystic, and engraver, who illustrated and printed his own books. Blake proclaimed the supremacy of the imagination over the rationalism and materialism of the 18th-century. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age.

Book excerpt: Lily's life is turned upside down when the Devil and his Conscience appear with a blood-inked contract binding her to write an incredible saga of Heaven and Hell as dictated. In a darkly humorous fashion, Lily fights her muses every step of the way, even after losing her job, her apartment, all her possessions, and nearly losing her life, but Lily cannot resist their fantastic story that outlines a seemingly simple mistake made by Marduk, the Black Dragon, and Amon, the White One, aka the Devil and God. This one simple mistake begins to spiral out of control with far reaching consequences both are powerless to stop, especially the Marriage of Heaven and Hell that springs from an unlikely romantic union that has disastrous consequences when the Elders step forward to right the wrongs of the Black Dragon and the White One. Marriage of Heaven and Hell is the first book in The Children of the Incubi series, a darkly humorous, romantically erotic, eerily preternatural, softly horrific, and highly irreverent 6-volume adult fantasy Saga of God and the Devil. But Amon and Marduk are not your grandmother's God and Devil. Lily is surprised to learn that the Gods are not only equal confederates who are fiercely loyal to each other, but they are also sexy, witty, wicked, selfish, clumsy, and tragically flawed. Humanity awakens the Gods in this epic Saga of love, lust, betrayal, deceit, debauchery, murder, war, dark spirits, revenge, torture, and twisted humor in the Colonies of the Gods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last volumes in the series of William Blake's Illuminated Books reveal the writer and artist as a prophet driven by a sense of apocalyptic urgency. Blake conceived and executed The Continental Prophecies and The Urizen Books in the early 1790s, capturing the intellectual and spiritual turmoil of the American and French revolutions. Here, for the first time, the general reader will encounter Blake's most intense vision in reproductions that do justice to the originals, accompanied by texts, comprehensive notes and commentaries, and detailed interpretations of the designs. The Continental Prophecies, which comprises "America," "Europe," and "The Song of Los," presents Blake's critical reckoning with the history of his own times. Marked by a particularly close integration of word and image, the books form a mythical plot from historical events and criticize the intricate structure of social oppression that the author attributes to organized state religion. Each of the three books attempts to point a way toward the process of millennial liberation. These volumes complete the six-part series of William Blake's Illuminated Books, including Jerusalem, Songs of Innocence and of Experience (now available in paperback), The Early Illuminated Books, and Milton, A Poem, all published by Princeton University Press.

Book excerpt: In his illuminated books,William Blake combined his handwritten text with his exuberant imagery on pages the like of which had not been seen since the great decorated books of the Middle Ages. To read such books as Jerusalem, America and Songs of Innocence and of Experience in cold letterpress bears no comparison to seeing and reading them as Blake conceived them, infused with his sublime and exhilarating colours. At times tiny figures and forms dance among the lines of the text, flames appear to burn up the page, and dense passages of Biblical-sounding text are brought to a jarring halt by startling images of death, destruction and liberation. This edition, produced together with The William Blake Trust, contains all the pages of Blakes twenty or so illuminated books reproduced in true size, an appendix with all Blakes text set in type and an introduction by the noted Blake scholar, David Bindman. They can at last become part of the lives of all lovers of art and poetry.
