This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Families of Antrim, New Hampshire comprises the second half of W. R. Cochrane's centennial history of the town, in which the compiler endeavored to record the genealogy, however fragmentary, of every family born or associated with Antrim from 1777 to the time of the book's publication in 1880. Many of the genealogies, it should be noted, span the town's 100-year history to 1877 and/or are replete with biographical information on their subjects. Arranged alphabetically by surname, the sketches number nearly 1,000.

This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Bosworth's treatise on Randolph County is fairly evenly divided between local history and genealogy. The narrative begins with a recounting of the adventures of its pioneering British, Irish, and German families, like the Tygarts, the organization of the county and its court, and the laying out of towns before attending to such customary topics as conflicts between pioneers and Native Americans, road construction, education, the Civil War in Randolph County, Randolph County professionals, etc. Strewn among these chapters are valuable lists of marriages, public officials, land patents, soldiers, physicians, attorneys, and so on. Of even greater interest to researchers, of course, are the scores of biographical notes at the conclusion of the book and the roughly 100 genealogical sketches of Randolph County founding families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Provides rich new ethnographic material on a little-known population, the Bedouin of the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. It positions such marginal populations in the broader theoretical context of modernization and health and demographic transitions."--Allan G. Hill, Harvard University With an average of over nine children per family, older cohorts of Bedouin in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon have one of the highest fertility rates in the world. Many married couples in this pastoral community are close relatives--a socially advantageous practice that reflects the deep value Bedouins place on kinship. To outsiders, such family norms can seem disturbing, even premodern. They attract assumptions of Arab "backwardness," poverty, and sexism. Remarkably, Fertile Bonds flips these stereotypes. Anthropological demographer Suzanne Joseph shows that in this particular group, prolific birth rates coincide with moderate death rates and high levels of nutrition. Despite broader class differences between Bedouins and peasants, members of Bekaa Bedouin society rely heavily on kinship ties, sharing, and reciprocity and experience a high degree of social and demographic equality. This story, unfamiliar to many, is one that is fading as traditional nomadic livelihoods give way to encapsulation within the state. With the help of this surprising, nuanced study--one of the first of its kind in the Middle East--knowledge of such marginalized pastoral groups will not vanish with the disappearance of their way of life. Joseph’s book expands our understanding of peoples far removed from consolidated government control and provides a broad analytical lens through which to examine demographic divides across the globe. .

Book Essex County Virginia Marriage Bonds 1804 1850 Annotated

Download or read book Essex County Virginia Marriage Bonds 1804 1850 Annotated written by Wesley E. Pippenger and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a compilation of data found in 1,478 marriage bonds or consents of Essex County, Virginia, for the years 1804 through 1850. These are the earliest marriage records that survive for the county those before were either burned or inadvertently destroyed. These original records are not generally served to researchers, rather researchers are directed to a bound Register of Marriages (Book One) that lists the bonds. Each entry references the page in this Register on which the information may be found. The most bonds were issued in 1835 (forty-seven) and 1827 (forty), with the other years averaging about thirty each. The fewest bonds are found for 1826 (seventeen).Individual entries in this work were derived primarily from marriage bonds and consents (by guardian or parent), and have been supplemented with data taken from outside sources such as: family Bible records, cemetery records, military records, and other publications. Not all entries contain information from outside sources. The format is two-fold: the first part of the paragraph is used for sequencing of the groom, and includes what data the compiler has found outside of the marriage record itself. Followed by this is the consolidated public marriage record (with the names of the bride and groom in capital letters), including the date of the marriage bond, and citing the main sources for the information used. The text is supplemented with nearly 900 footnotes by the compiler, an every-name index that contains over 9,000 entries, and a bibliography.

Book The Kin Who Count

  • Author : Margaret L. Meriwether
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9780292752245
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book The Kin Who Count written by Margaret L. Meriwether and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Middle Eastern family presents as many questions as there are currently answers. Who lived together in the household? Who married whom and for how long? Who got a piece of the patrimonial pie? These are the questions that Margaret Meriwether investigates in this groundbreaking study of family life among the upper classes of the Ottoman Empire in the pre-modern and early modern period. Meriwether recreates Aleppo family life over time from records kept by the Islamic religious courts that held jurisdiction over all matters of family law and property transactions. From this research, she asserts that the stereotype of the large, patriarchal patrilineal family rarely existed in reality. Instead, Aleppo's notables organized their families in a great diversity of ways, despite the fact that they were all members of the same social class with widely shared cultural values, acting under the same system of family law. She concludes that this had important implications for gender relations and demonstrates that it gave women more authority and greater autonomy than is usually acknowledged.
