Book excerpt: The national bestseller From the author of the bestselling More Beautiful Than Before comes an inspiring book about loss based on his most popular sermon. As the senior rabbi of one of the largest synagogues in the world, Steve Leder has learned over and over again the many ways death teaches us how to live and love more deeply by showing us not only what is gone but also the beauty of what remains. This inspiring and comforting book takes us on a journey through the experience of loss that is fundamental to everyone. Yet even after having sat beside thousands of deathbeds, Steve Leder the rabbi was not fully prepared for the loss of his own father. It was only then that Steve Leder the son truly learned how loss makes life beautiful by giving it meaning and touching us with love that we had not felt before. Enriched by Rabbi Leder's irreverence, vulnerability, and wicked sense of humor, this heartfelt narrative is filled with laughter and tears, the wisdom of millennia and modernity, and, most of all, an unfolding of the profound and simple truth that in loss we gain more than we ever imagined.

You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book Firewalking on Jupiter

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Kinzer
  • Publisher : Jupiter Center Publications
  • Release : 2014-06-05
  • ISBN : 9780692221860
  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book Firewalking on Jupiter written by Michael Kinzer and published by Jupiter Center Publications. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is this book called Firewalking on Jupiter? An old friend, no longer with us in this life, once called me "firewalker." He told me he called me firewalker because I had a way of living my life as I saw fit, with confidence, not needing to justify who I was or the decisions I made-that this ability was the result of a difficult but necessary process of facing my many personal demons and re-experiencing traumatic events in my childhood. You will find many references in this book to the idea that it is possible to live a life in which you have no fear of any part of yourself or your past because you have accepted yourself fully, including the parts of yourself you may not particularly like. My experience as a therapy client in adulthood, and then later as a therapist helping others, tells me the process is not easy, but it is possible. Although I do not describe in detail the environment of abuse and chaos I survived as a child in this book, I have written about it elsewhere, given talks about it, and may publish someday the memoir I have written about it, called Twelfth Child. My need to fully explore very painful memories and relationships has galvanized my commitment to helping others realize they can do the same-they can become their own firewalkers. Just in case you were wondering, I do realize that it would be pretty difficult to go "Firewalking on Jupiter," where the average temperature is -234 degrees (Fahrenheit). The reference to Jupiter is related to the ideas behind my own emotional path and how I help clients now as a therapist. An interpretation of the ancient symbol for Jupiter (inside the orange circle on the cover) is that it means "soul dominating matter," or "mind over matter." This is a very powerful idea. We did not choose our birth parents, gender, race, or our time in history to be born. If these things define us, then we are nothing but circumstance. This cannot be true. And it isn't true. We have a mind, which gives us the freedom to choose how to respond to our circumstance -this is mind over matter. I have been providing therapy services to clients for over a decade. This book is the result of the work I have done as a client in therapy and then later, as a therapist helping others, learning from my own life experiences and from the struggles my clients bring to my office every day. Whether you are a person searching for your own personal growth or a professional helping others on their path, I want this book to help you learn what I have learned about clients' struggles (without violating confidentiality of course) and how I have been able to help along the way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you fall back in love? This was the underlying problem of one in four couples seeking help from relationship therapist Andrew G. Marshall. They described their problem as: 'I love you but I'm not in love with you'. Noticing how widespread the phenomenon had become, he decided to look more closely. Why were these relationships becoming defined more by companionship than by passion, and why was companionship no longer enough? From his research Andrew has devised his own unique programme. By looking at how a couple communicate, argue, share love, take responsibility, give and learn he offers in seven steps a reassuring and empowering map for how two individuals can better understand themselves, strengthen their bond and recover that lost magic.

Instead, get to the emotional underpinnings of your relationship by recognizing that you are emotionally attached to and dependent on your partner in much the same way that a child is on a parent for nurturing, soothing, and protection. Dr. Johnson teaches that the way to enhance or save a relationship is to be open, attuned, and responsive to each other and to reestablish emotional connection. With this in mind, she focuses on key moments in a relationship and uses them as touch points for seven healing conversations, including: Recognizing the Demon Dialogues Finding the Raw Spots Revisiting a Rocky Moment Forgiving Injuries Keeping Your Love Alive These conversations give you insight into the defining moments in your relationship and guide you in reshaping these moments to create a secure and lasting bond. Through stories from Dr. Johnson’s practice, illuminating advice, and practical exercises, you will learn how to nurture, protect, and grow your relationship, ensuring a lifetime of love.
