Download or read book How Does it Feel Point of View in Translation written by Charlotte Bosseaux and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narratology is concerned with the study of narratives; but surprisingly it does not usually distinguish between original and translated texts. This lack of distinction is regrettable. In recent years the visibility of translations and translators has become a widely discussed topic in Translation Studies; yet the issue of translating a novel’s point of view has remained relatively unexplored. It seems crucial to ask how far a translator’s choices affect the novel’s point of view, and whether characters or narrators come across similarly in originals and translations. This book addresses exactly these questions. It proposes a method by which it becomes possible to investigate how the point of view of a work of fiction is created in an original and adapted in translation. It shows that there are potential problems involved in the translation of linguistic features that constitute point of view (deixis, modality, transitivity and free indirect discourse) and that this has an impact on the way works are translated. Traditionally, comparative analysis of originals and their translations have relied on manual examinations; this book demonstrates that corpus-based tools can greatly facilitate and sharpen the process of comparison. The method is demonstrated using Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse (1927) and The Waves (1931), and their French translations.

Book excerpt: What would you say or do if you ever wanted to reach your Greatness? This shocking and provocative question is at the core of the remarkable and inspiring book, Destined for Greatness. This book emerged from the speaking series designed to help people discover their Greatness and then speak it out loud, as taught by Pastor Alex. In this book, Pastor Alex goes beyond the event and dives into what it means to discover your truth and pursue your destiny of Greatness. He answers the question "Why people should go after their Greatness? "and then explains precisely how to reach Greatness. If you feel living more authentically could allow you to have a more significant impact on others, or you can't find the way to reach your destination as bad as you want to, this is the book for you. The path Pastor Alex lays out is simple but not easy because your greatest gift lies next to your deepest wounds, but make no mistake, You are destined for Greatness.
Download or read book Cahiers de Recherche Tome 9 Points de vue sur l inversion written by Christine Copy and published by Editions OPHRYS. This book was released on 2007-07-27 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Toxines et cancer written by GOUDEY-PERRIÈRE Françoise and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2006-11-26 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This book brings together the work of a number of leading specialists of the Fulbe (Fulani, Peul), the largest and most widespread group of pastoralists in West Africa. The collection deals with a wide variety of subjects, ranging from ethnicity and identity, ecology and politics, and social transformation and takes us to such diverse settings across the African continent as urban Nigeria, dryland West and Central Mali, the Aadamaawa plateau in Cameroon, the Guinean highlands, the Ivorian savannah, the Central Sudan, Northern Benin and the Senegal valley. This volume shows that the Fulbe are a fascinating example for the comparative study of social change, and ecological and cultural adaptation by discussing contemporary changes in Fulbe society and the amazing variety of settings in which they are able to survive.

Download or read book Langues et litt ratures written by Collectif, and published by Presses Univ. du Mirail. This book was released on 2001-09-18 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Most of the papers in this volume were written for the international conference on "Linguistics and the English Language" which was held in Toulouse on July 7 and 8, 2000. Their authors (linguists, translation specialists and stylisticians) underscore the necessarily homogeneous character of their scientific tools when applied to what obviously constitutes the common ground of their respective approaches : language. Indeed, one can hardly aim at translating the specific encoding of a given source-text into the chosen encoding of a target-text, at bringing out the traces of basic language mechanisms, at highlighting the markers of subjectivity generating significant deviations from more or less pre-established norms, without being fully aware of the enunciative, syntactic, and semantic structures of one (or several) natural language(s). This is precisely what each of the contributions selected for this volume tries to achieve, with its own specified methodological device.
Download or read book The Expression of Tense Aspect Modality and Evidentiality in Albert Camus s L tranger and Its Translations L tranger de Camus et ses traductions questions de temps d aspect de modalit et d videntialit TAME written by Eric Corre and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the linguistic treatment of tense-aspect-modal-evidential (TAME) expressions in translations of the French novel L’Étranger by Albert Camus into sixteen languages. It is strongly empirical in spirit, and uses the method of contrastive linguistics and multilingual comparison through the use of parallel corpora. It has five main parts: the first two offer insights into perfect and imperfect tenses in Indo-European languages; the third part shifts the focus on non Indo-European languages; the fourth part deals with modality, and the last part is more translation-oriented. These contents make this book a valuable contribution in semantic micro-typology. In terms of readership, both linguists and specialists in translation, as well as literature scholars, can benefit from the contributions presented in this book. It also relates to other usage-based, corpus-driven studies of TAME phenomena, and to monographs that take as their object of study the use of corpus linguistics in translation studies.
