Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marlowe's Edward II A Good deal of the material embodied in the Introduction to this volume was originally contained in a doctorate thesis submitted by the author to Harvard University in 1900. Much water, however, has run under the bridge since that year, and the Introduction in its present form is quite different from the thesis. Certain ideas that I then flattered myself were more or less new are now commonplace enough; the 'chronicle history' has been carefully studied in the last few years, and hardly any competent scholar who attentively examines the subject can fail to discover for himself the principal features of its development. I cannot then pretend to offer to the world any large fund of new information. Nevertheless, I venture to print this account of the growth of an interesting and important species of the drama in the hope that the reader will find it to be at least a useful collection of material. The emphasis, for purposes of clear presentation, has been laid upon the development of what is called 'form.' Quite obviously there is no fixed line to be drawn between form and content, and the distinction represents an abstraction from the facts for scientific convenience. Book excerpt: "Edward II" is one of the earliest English history plays. It focuses on the relationship between King Edward II of England and Piers Gaveston and Edward's murder on the orders of Roger Mortimer. Marlowe portrays the king's downfall as a result of his love for his dearests, Gaveston and Spencer, his negligence of his queen and earls, and the rise of Queen Isabella and her lover Mortimer. The play explores the tragic tensions between sexual passion and marriage, royal duty and self-fulfillment, and noble privilege and ambition.

Book excerpt: Edward the Second By Christopher Marlowe Edward the Second is an English history play about the deposition of King Edward II by his barons and the Queen, who resent the undue influence the king's favourites have in court and state affairs. The play was entered into the Stationers' Register on 6 July 1593, five weeks after Marlowe's death. The full title of the earliest extant edition, of 1594, is "The Troublesome Reign and Lamentable Death of Edward the Second, King of England, with the Tragical Fall of Proud Mortimer." The play was first acted in 1592 or 1593. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book excerpt: Depicting with shocking openness the sexual and political violence of its central characters’ fates, Edward the Second broke new dramatic ground in English theatre. The play charts the tragic rise and fall of the medieval English monarch Edward the Second, his favourite Piers Gaveston, and their ambitious opponents Queen Isabella and Mortimer Jr., and is an important cultural, as well as dramatic, document of the early modern period. This modernized and fully annotated Broadview Edition is prefaced by a critical but student-oriented introduction and followed by ample appendix material, including extended selections from Marlowe’s historical sources, texts bearing on the play’s complex sexual and political dynamics, and excerpts from contemporary poet Michael Drayton’s epic rendition of Edward the Second’s reign.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edward the Second: A Play Early Editions. A Quarto Edition of the play appeared in 1594; other Quartos followed in 1598, 1612, and 1622 respectively. Till twenty years ago the Quarto of 1598 was believed to be the earliest issue, and it has been made the basis of the text of Edward IL in all the standard editions of Marlowe's works. In 1876, however, a unique copy of the previously unknown Quarto of 1594 came to light in the royal library at Cassel; perhaps it had found its way thither through 'the English Comedians' who travelled in Germany at the end of the sixteenth and beginning of the seventeenth centuries, playing in the chief towns and at the various courts. Of this first Quarto there is no reprint, nor, so far as I am aware, has any collation of its text with the later Quartos ever been published. But inasmuch as the variations between the three later Quartos are comparatively slight, we may fairly assume that the play was printed with considerable accuracy in the first instance, and that, therefore, the Quarto of 1594 differs but little from its successors. There he was one of a group of university men who for a livelihood wrote poetry, especially plays and translations of classical authors. It is not unlikely that he was at times an actor as well as a writer of plays. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The full title of the first publication is The Troublesome Reign and Lamentable Death of Edward the Second, King of England, with the Tragical Fall of Proud Mortimer. Marlowe found most of his material for this play in the third volume of Raphael Holinshed's Chronicles (1587). Frederick Boas believes that "out of all the rich material provided by Holinshed" Marlowe was drawn to "the comparatively unattractive reign of Edward II" due to the relationship between the King and Gaveston. Boas elaborates, "Homosexual affection ... has (as has been seen) a special attraction for Marlowe. Jove and Ganymede in Dido, Henry III and his 'minions' in The Massacre, Neptune and Leander in Hero and Leander, and all akin, although drawn to a slighter scale, to Edward and Gaveston." Boas also notes the existence of a number of parallels between Edward II and The Massacre at Paris, asserting that "it is scarcely too much to say that scenes xi-xxi of The Massacre are something in the nature of a preliminary sketch for Edward II." Marlowe stayed close to the account but embellished it with the character of Lightborn (or Lucifer) as Edward's assassin. Of special value to both students and scholars are the Related Texts that follow the text of the play: three sections of documentary evidence on historical sources; power and politics; and love, friendship, and homoeroticism--all vital to an understanding of the play. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward II is one of the earliest English history plays. The narrative begins late in Edward’s reign, when his court is concerned and disgusted by his almost inexplicably close relationship with the nobleman Gaveston. Gaveston has just returned from exile, much to the chagrin of Edward’s court. He wasn’t born a noble, but holds immense wealth and titles bestowed upon him by Edward, as well as his almost complete attention; and when Edward begins scorning his own wife in favor of Gaveston’s company, the rest of the nobles immediately demand his expulsion from England. Edward must reluctantly oblige—but by then it’s too late, for the wheels of conspiracy are already in motion. Marlowe depicts Edward and Gaveston’s relationship as a clearly homosexual one, and the themes and events of the play revolve around their relationship’s taboo nature. But the play also focuses on social status: the nobles appear to be just as offended that Gaveston, a commoner, is gifted the benefits of nobility by Edward, as they are by the couple’s homoerotic relationship. The play is based on material found in Holinshed’s Chronicles, the same book of history that Shakespeare used as a source for many of his own history plays. Marlowe stayed fairly true to history, despite some embellishments; consequently the play was of interest and performed with regularity well into the seventeenth century, with frequent revivals since. Book excerpt: Edward II has just become king after the death of his father, and he immediately summons his exiled favorite, Piers Gaveston, to the court. This does not make the nobles of the court happy, as they see Gaveston as basely born and their own influence suffering in light of his. In particular, Mortimer (Junior) and the Earl of Lancaster mount an offense, taking their complaints to the king. Edward cares not, and happily welcomes Gaveston home. The nobles threaten Edward that he cannot have his minion here, and Edward is astonished at their audacity. Nevertheless, he keeps Gaveston by his side and even strips the Bishop of Coventry, who'd been responsible for Gaveston's exile, of his property and tokens of office.

Book excerpt: Dramatically compressing the reign of Edward II and enlivening the historical narrative with humour, romance, and horrific violence, Marlowe interrogates how the transgression of accepted codes of behaviour affects even those at the highest level of society. Kept off the stage for almost three hundred years because of its dramatization of explicit homosexual relationships, it has become increasingly popular with modern day readers and performed on stage and film to great acclaim. This student edition contains a completely new introduction by Stephen Guy-Bray, and offers students a useful and lively overview of recent criticism, an updated performance history paying greater attention to Derek Jarman's film, a background on the author and themes, as well as an updated bibliography and a fully annotated version of the playtext.
