Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe returns in The Black-Eyed Blonde—also published as Marlowe as by John Banville—the basis for the major motion picture starring Liam Neeson as the iconic detective. "Somewhere Raymond Chandler is smiling . . . I loved this book. It was like having an old friend, one you assumed was dead, walk into the room." —Stephen King "It was one of those Tuesday afternoons in summer when you wonder if the earth has stopped revolving." The streets of Bay City, California, in the early 1950s are as mean as they get. Marlowe is as restless and lonely as ever, and the private eye business is a little slow. Then a new client is shown in: blond, beautiful, and expensively dressed, she wants Marlowe to find her former lover. Almost immediately, Marlowe discovers that the man's disappearance is merely the first in a series of bewildering events. Soon he is tangling with one of Bay City's richest and most ruthless families—and developing a singular appreciation for how far they will go to protect their fortune. “It’s vintage L.A., toots: The hot summer, rain on the asphalt, the woman with the lipstick, cigarette ash and alienation, V8 coupes, tough guys, snub-nosed pistols, the ice melting in the bourbon . . . . The results are Chandleresque, sure, but you can see Banville’s sense of fun.” —The Washington Post

Book The Lady in the Lake The Little Sister The Long Goodbye Playback

Download or read book The Lady in the Lake The Little Sister The Long Goodbye Playback written by Raymond Chandler and published by Everyman's Library. This book was released on 2002-10-15 with total page 1007 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creator of the famous Philip Marlowe, Raymond Chandler elevated the American hard-boiled detective genre to an art form. Chandler’s last four novels, published here in one volume, offer ample opportunity to savor the unique and utterly compelling fictional world that made his works modern classics. The Lady in the Lake moves Marlowe out of his usual habitat of city streets and into the mountains outside of Los Angeles in his strange search for a missing woman. The Little Sister takes Marlowe to Hollywood, where he tries to find a sweet young thing’s missing brother, uncovering on the way a little blackmail, a lot of drugs, and more than enough murder. In The Long Goodbye, a case involving a war-scarred drunk and his nymphomaniac wife has Marlowe constantly on the move: a psychotic gangster’s on his trail, he’s in trouble with the cops, and more and more corpses keep turning up. Playback features a well-endowed redhead who leads Marlowe to the California coast to solve a tale of big money and, of course, murder. Throughout these masterpieces, Marlowe’s wry humor and existential sense of his job prove yet again why he has become one of the most recognized and imitated characters in fiction. Featuring the iconic character that inspired the forthcoming film Marlowe, starring Liam Neeson.

Book Philip Marlowe s Guide to Life

Download or read book Philip Marlowe s Guide to Life written by Raymond Chandler and published by Duckworth Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Marlowe is the quintessential American detective. His effortless masculinity, smouldering sexuality and silver tongue remain the embodiment of cool. He likes booze, women, and working alone - portrayed on film by the rougher, tougher stars of Hollywood, Robert Mitchum and Humphrey Bogart - but, in a world defined by betrayal, mistrust, and double-dealing, Marlowe's rough exterior belies an unshakeable code of honour. Taken together, his observations and witticisms represent some of the most scathing and brilliant writing in crime fiction, and coalesce into a wonderfully alluring worldview, a vision of unswerving righteousness, accountability, and stylish conduct in a sea of turpitude and injustice.

Book The Development of the Detective in American hard boiled Fiction with Reference to Philip Marlowe in Raymond Chandler s The Curtain Killer in the Rain and The Big Sleep

Download or read book The Development of the Detective in American hard boiled Fiction with Reference to Philip Marlowe in Raymond Chandler s The Curtain Killer in the Rain and The Big Sleep written by Katrin Gischler and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2, University of Kassel (Anglistik-Amerikanistik), course: American Crime Fiction, 14 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Raymond Thornton Chandler started his career as a crime novelist relatively late in 1933 at the age of 45 (Widdicombe, xvi). With the foundation of the Black Mask Magazine, Chandler, as well as many other writers, got the chance to test his talent as a crime novelist and simultaneously to raise some money. His first stories were miniature novels which were strongly influenced by his British sophistication and education (Phillips, 17). But he was aware of the fact that he had to veil his style of writing in order to make it acceptable to the American readers, especially the Black Mask readers (Phillips, 17). During 1933 and 1939 Chandler published 20 detective stories in several "pulp magazines" until he wrote his first novel The Big Sleep (Neumeyer, 329). By writing longer fiction Chandler had to portray his characters fully and give an authentic sense of the world, whereas the short story allowed him to rely on action (MacShane, 63). Chandler's ambition was to mark off from the English detectives of Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, i.e. to create a reliable character that would "leave scars" and transfer what he calls a "'half-poetical emotion' that is the heart of the work" (MacShane, 69). This kind of reliability became one of Chandler's dogmas and occurs not only in his creation of characters and plot but also in the historical background of the stories. In the following paper I'm going to analyze the origin and development of the private-eye in general. I will focus my analysis on the development of the detective in American "hard-boiled" fiction with reference to Philip Marlowe in Raymond Chandler's "The Curtain", "Killer in the Rain", and the novel The Big Sleep. The choice relies on the fact that The Big Sleep and its character
