Book Letters to My Daughters

Download or read book Letters to My Daughters written by Mary Matalin and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Letters to My Daughters, famed political consultant and TV personality Mary Matalin shares the moral, ethical, and occasionally comic life lessons gleaned from her mother's experiences and her own. These intimate, personal letters range from the spiritual to the practical, from giving life to accepting death, from civic to personal responsibility, from looking and feeling good to dealing with those pesky boys, and more. Here's a sampling of the mother wisdom found in these pages: Crying is not a weakness; it's cathartic and cleansing. People who live life with the fullest commitment tend to cry a lot. It's a healthy expression of deep emotions. I don't like or trust people who don't or can't cry. When I tell you I understand what you're going through, it's not just because I remember what it felt like to be a teenage girl whose body is being hijacked by hormones against her will. It's because I'm a fifty-something whose body is being hijacked by hormones against her will at this very moment. And if you don't believe me, just ask your father. I believe in my heart of hearts that a life without faith is unanchored and unfulfilling. Without it, you're just wandering in the desert. You experience deeply that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts -- and the singing is damn good. Ma had a complex philosophy of sex, which I heard almost every day from age ten. "Boys would screw a snake if it would lay still long enough." Let's flash forward forty years and allow your mother to give you a twenty-first-century take on boys and S-E-X: "Boys would screw a snake if it would lay still long enough."...And the men in Washington think that's a compliment. A deep sense of loyalty can help you overcome almost any bump in the road. The disloyal may advantage themselves in some work situations, but their gains will be temporary, fleeting. They will fail their institutions, their colleagues, and worst of all, themselves. Filled with warmth, common sense, a belief in the values that keep families strong, and her trademark sense of humor, Mary Matalin's letters will inspire, guide, entertain, and inform. They're the perfect companion for any mother looking for a smart, sensible fellow traveler on the road to raising good daughters.

Book Re Constructing Memory School Textbooks and the Imagination of the Nation

Download or read book Re Constructing Memory School Textbooks and the Imagination of the Nation written by James H. Williams and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-08 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the shifting portrayal of the nation in school textbooks in 14 countries during periods of rapid political, social, and economic change. Drawing on a range of analytic strategies, the authors examine history and civics textbooks, and the teaching of such texts, along with other prominent curricular materials—children’s readers, a required text penned by the head of state, a holocaust curriculum, etc.. The authors analyze the uses of history and pedagogy in building, reinforcing and/or redefining the nation and state especially in the light of challenges to its legitimacy. The primary focus is on countries in developing or transitional contexts. Issues include the teaching of democratic civics in a multiethnic state with little history of democratic governance; shifts in teaching about the Khmer Rouge in post-conflict Cambodia; children’s readers used to define national space in former republics of the Soviet Union; the development of Holocaust education in a context where citizens were both victims and perpetuators of violence; the creation of a national past in Turkmenistan; and so forth. The case studies are supplemented by commentary, an introduction and conclusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative look at the new, digital landscape of childhood and how to navigate it. Drawing on groundbreaking research in economics, psychology, philosophy, and education, The New Childhood shows how technology is guiding humanity toward a bright future in which our children will be able to create new, better models of global citizenship, connection, and community. Shapiro offers concrete, practical advice on how to parent and educate children effectively in a connected world, and provides tools and techniques for using technology to engage with kids and help them learn and grow. He compares this moment in time to other great technological revolutions in humanity's past and presents entertaining micro-histories of cultural fixtures: the sandbox, finger painting, the family dinner, and more. But most importantly, The New Childhood paints a timely, inspiring and positive picture of today's children, recognizing that they are poised to create a progressive, diverse, meaningful, and hyper-connected world that today's adults can only barely imagine.

This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

Book excerpt: MILESTONES - THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF OUR LIVES They make us who we are and who we become.... A Milestone is a great achievement in life that cannot be forgotten. One way that will be accomplished is by saying goodbye to the past and hello to the future. No one ever successfully drives forward looking in the rear view mirror. This in itself is a major accomplishment: Letting go of what is behind of the old life and pressing forward and walking into what lies ahead in Christ Jesus. Some typical examples of milestones are when one learns how to drive, graduates from school, leaves home for the first time, marriage, a first child, a first job, getting saved, and for some it could even mean the first day sober! There are three components that make up Milestones: the spoken Word of God, the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and substituting thinking - changing the way we think. This workbook will not just help you to take the right steps towards lasting recovery from addictions, but it will create crucial landmarks in your life's journey. So that you will become full of God's faith and power to venture on into your destiny! Milestones can be used for individual or group growth. Some may just want to work it alone as a personal reflection tool to solidify their faith. But most will benefit from working it together in a support setting where the Milestones can be discussed in depth. People who are in codependent relationships will benefit from Milestones, too. This book also, contains information how to set up a faith-based recovery program. So if you have been searching for a Faith-Based, Spirit Empowered program that emphasizes the Rhema Word of God, then look no further! Milestones is here.
