Book Diversifying Retail and Distribution in Thailand

Download or read book Diversifying Retail and Distribution in Thailand written by Endo Gen and published by Silkworm Books. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The entry of transnational retailers into emerging markets inevitably disrupts the existing retail and distribution structures. Thailand experienced such disruption to its traditional retailing system beginning in 1990 and continuing through the following two decades, to the extent that many observers have called it a “revolution.” But the term “revolution” is a misnomer, according to this study. The new retail and distribution formats, rather than replacing traditional markets, have continued to exist alongside them. In addition, Thailand’s retail and distribution industries are heading toward diversification rather than uniformity, the latter phenomenon being generally associated with the advance of multinational corporations. Endo analyzes Thailand’s retail structure in the light of its entire distribution system, examining how changes have affected not only horizontal, competitive relationships between modern and traditional retailers, but also vertical relationships with manufacturers and wholesalers. Rather than focusing narrowly on the urban middle-class consumer market, he considers the markets’ income differentials—the “mosaic structure”—which is an indispensable framework for discussing the retail and consumption practices of an emerging economy. The book presents a thoroughgoing and positive analysis well grounded in Thailand’s historical context. Studies on the advance of transnational retailers into emerging markets have recently flourished, most of which aim to clarify the internationalization of retail from a commercial science perspective by concentrating on the transnational retailers’ activities. In this book, greater attention is given to the particular circumstances of the host countries’ retail and distribution systems and consumer markets. Using a comparative-business-history approach to a single country, this research contributes significantly to our understanding of retail and distribution systems in emerging markets globally. Highlights -A thoroughgoing and positive analysis of Thailand’s current retail and distribution system - Presents data using more than 40 tables - Views the current situation within its historical context - Uses a broad perspective of the consumer market based on income differentials— a “mosaic structure”

Book Linguistic Diversity and National Unity

Download or read book Linguistic Diversity and National Unity written by William A. Smalley and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994-06-15 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike other multi-ethnic nations, such as Myanmar and India, where official language policy has sparked bloody clashes, Thailand has maintained relative stability despite its eighty languages. In this study of the relations among politics, geography, and language, William A. Smalley shows how Thailand has maintained national unity through an elaborate social and linguistic hierarchy. Smalley contends that because the people of Thailand perceive their social hierarchy as the normal order, Standard Thai, spoken by members of the higher levels of society, prevails as the uncontested national language. By examining the hierarchy of Thailand's diverse languages and dialects in light of Thai history, education, culture, and religion, Smalley shows how Thailand has been able to keep its many ethnic groups at peace. Linguistic Diversity and National Unity explores the intricate relationship between language and power and the ways in which social and linguistic rank can be used to perpetuate order.

Book The Intimate Economies of Bangkok

Download or read book The Intimate Economies of Bangkok written by Ara Wilson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2004-07-19 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bangkok has been at the frontier of capitalism's drive into the global south for three decades. Rapid development has profoundly altered public and private life in Thailand. In her provocative study of contemporary commerce in Bangkok, Ara Wilson captures the intimate effects of the global economy in this vibrant city. The Intimate Economies of Bangkok is a multifaceted portrait of the intertwining of identities, relationships, and economics during Bangkok's boom years. Using innovative case studies of women's and men's participation in a range of modern markets—department stores, go-go bars, a popular downtown mall, a telecommunications company, and the direct sales corporations Amway and Avon—Wilson chronicles the powerful expansion of capitalist exchange into further reaches of Thai society. She shows how global economies have interacted with local systems to create new kinds of lifestyles, ranging from "tomboys" to corporate tycoons to sex workers. Combining feminist theory with classic anthropological understandings of exchange, this historically grounded ethnography maps the reverberations of gender, sexuality, and ethnicity at the hub of Bangkok's modern economy.

Book excerpt: "Hruschka's integrative approach provides a robust, and accessible, view of the complexities of making, having, and being friends. This kind of inquiry is at the forefront of modern biocultural anthropology."--Agustin Fuentes, author of Evolution of Human Behavior "Despite its importance to human happiness and well-being, friendship has long been a puzzle--largely a neglected one--for evolutionary scholars. Daniel Hruschka's book is a long overdue remedy to this situation. Through a deft combination of rigorous analysis and fine writing, Hruschka provides a thorough examination of friendship across the full range of human societies, past and present. His book will be an essential starting point for future work on this important topic."--Lee Cronk, author of That Complex Whole: Culture and the Evolution of Human Behavior "With Friendship, Dan Hruschka uses evolutionary science to breathe new life into a topic that is vastly important and woefully misunderstood. Remarkable for its scope, insightfulness, and clarity, this book will change how we think about friendship for years to come."--Michael McCullough, author of Beyond Revenge: The Evolution of the Forgiveness Instinct

Book The Legend of the Golden Boat

Download or read book The Legend of the Golden Boat written by Andrew Walker and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Legend of the Golden Boat provides a new approach to the study of Southeast Asia’s northern borderlands. Based on extensive travel in the upper Mekong hinterland, it is a fascinating account of the lives of the transport operators, traders, entrepreneurs, and government officials. This ethnographic study is set against an intriguing background of war, revolution, and reform, providing one of the most detailed histories of the upper Mekong borderlands ever written. Contemporary developments in the upper Mekong region are often interpreted in terms of the emergence of a trans-border Economic Quadrangle, characterized by liberalization, integration, and cooperation. This book seeks to go beyond this promotional rhetoric and explore the ambiguities and contradictions in the Quadrangle’s development.
